Lets see if there is any accuracy at 1100 FPS!
In this video I will test the FX Impact M3 with 16 and 20 gr slugs at velocities between 1000 and 1100 fps - and while we are at it lets find the true power potential of the M3 in 177.
Enjoy

This videos proves a very good point....tuning takes time!!! You can not shoot 1 5 shot group and come to a conclusion that "its too fast" or "my gun hates these slugs" Great video

Thanks for all your effort. This tests are really time consuming and certainly will help several shooters.

Great video. I don't believe that the velocity is too high it is that the velocity is not high enough. At sea level the speed of sound is 1,126 feet per second. You are basically trying to shoot slugs in a transonic region of unstable air flow around the slug. The key to getting accuracy at higher velocities is to shoot the slug at a significantly higher velocity that when the pellet impacts the target (not muzzle velocity) it is at least faster than 1,200 feet per second keeping it supersonic from the muzzle all the way to the target. That will take a different barrel twist along with redesigned and harder slugs. Basically, you need to stay above or below the speed of sound because when a projectile is shot supersonic and slows back down below the speed of sound it will always become unstable in the transonic region which results in a very poor accuracy. Give it 5 years and I think we will be there.

Agree completely 🙂 It might be possible to shoot a lighter slug - perhaps a 13 gr - at a much higher velocity. But Im not sure that it will stay above the 1126 fps for long. But yes lets see what will happen in a few years 🙂 Thanks for sharing your thoughts mate 🤗

We are already there. Ive machined my own parts (including the valve) to push velocities way beyond what the Impact M3 can achieve with traditional aftermarket springs n hammer weights. It took a lot of trial and error but now im able to easily push a 50gr .22 custom-swaged slug well into supersonic speeds. And I had done all this 1.5 years ago. I'm sure a few others others out there have secretly done the same.
@Gentleman2019
@Gentleman2019 9 месяцев назад
That's exactly what happened when i was shooting .22 40gr slugs at 1100fps.. At 1065fps was not so good then i pushed the velocity to approx 1105fps, the groups were excellent even at ultra long range.

Awesome video and info 👌 I like shooting slugs at around 995 fps I'm shooting 34 gr javelin 218 at 995 fps av I tried to do the same thing Ted did with 800mm barrel tension system with the same slugs 31.2 nsa at 1100 but I could not get the same accuracy has he did I think it's because his barrel is a 1:14 tr and the barrel I got it a 1:18 so I think that was my problem I tried but it didn't work out 😊 I switched back to the 700mm heavy liner 22 cal of course shooting 34 gr at 995 av thanks for sharing be safe my friend

Thanks Chris 🙂 Having only shot the 177 with one twistrate available, I never consider that factor. Maybe with the results from this test I can send a message to Sweden that a faster twistrate is needed 🤞😃 But anyway Im very satisfied with 20 gr at 940 fps and 16 gr at 970 fps. They are doing a great job 😎 Have a great day buddy 🙂

Hey Peter, nice test and numbers. Cannot go that high with my Crown. 950 with 16gr and 910 with the 20gr. And they group nice at 100 mtr. If I have a good day around 2cm. Average day 3 to 4 cm. And the Zan slugs do a bit better than H&N. I shoot the 16 gr out of my Alfa 70 cm barrel. The 20 gr out of my modified 67 cm FX super lightweight pellet light slug liner. Ha I actualy had my thoughts about reaching 1100 in 177. The Impact M3 is more capable than any other. Well you proved that it is possible, nice job.
@VikingAirgunner
@VikingAirgunner Год назад
Thank you Andries 🙂 Well for now it seems that we dont need to worry about the super high velocities, so your results seems much more useable. I went shooting the other day and by accident brought 20 gr when the gun was tuned for 16 😳 And of cause no tools... So I had to be constructive and make up a test, so I decided to test between 870-900 fps. And very surprisingly they did very well at 875-ish. So I believe that you are way more on track than I was in this video 😃 Hope that you are doing well!

Unlike the 22 caliber which offers multiple diameters to best suite the speed , length of barrel and twist rate , you are limited with the 177 caliber . With enough research and testing I think you could improve your groups with the right combination on a 177 if the demand was there and manufacturers were willing to make them . I wonder how much the moderator plays in accuracy as the pellet exits at much higher pressures . Try it with and without and see what happens .

Good point! I know that Matt Dubber is only using the muzzle break. And that is in a competition setup, so at lower velocity. If I had no neighbours to worry about I would test it out 😂 Actually I did test it in the forrest once, but it didnt improve. Maybe if one tested a bit more through it would work 🤔

Barrel twist rate too slow for the higher velocity. Looks like the slugs not hitting target flush. Hitting somewhat sideways a bit.

Is there any point to shooting so fast with lightweight slugs and the obvious diminishing return of higher fps? My .25 FX Maverick pushes 44gr slugs at ~1000-1080 fps with good groups. When using lighter slugs eg 25-34gr, the velocity must be reduced to tighten up the groups. With .177, I can't see the point of the test. Nevertheless, it was fun to watch! Would you consider repeating the test with .22 or .25 and heavy slugs? Thanks for sharing 👍

Thanks for your comment 🙂 And no.. The test convinced me that it was not worth it 😃 But when a question pops up I love to set up the test and find the answer 🤓 Saddly I am limited to 177, but I would love to have done the test in all calibers. The idea of shooting at the velocities that you are pushing is so great - also why I did the test. But I guess that saying in the 900's makes better sense in 177 🙂 Thanks for watching mate 🙂

Thanks for your videos - they very informative. I do notice that you always hand load your pellets and do noy use the M3 magazine - is there a reason for this?
@VikingAirgunner
@VikingAirgunner 3 месяца назад
Hi Ashley Using a single loader started when my magazine had some problems with slugs getting stuck, so I started using the single shot loader. Now it feels more relaxed and kind of a meditative routine between shots while focusing on the breathing an general calm. Using a magazine can easily be kind of mechanic and to fast. Stressfull in a way. So with the single shot loader I feel more focused 😎

@@VikingAirgunner Thanks so much for your reply. That was an interesting answer - but glad the reason was not that you found the magazines to cause inaccuracy issues. Please keep the videos coming - I have a .22 M3 with heavy liner and slug kit shooting H&N 25 grain slugs, but still hoping to fine tune my setup and accuracy. Looking forward to your next video

I have tried this settings 1100+ fps on my Panthera 700mm 100m or less its fine but when i tried to group 150m group bcomes Wider and tried 300m slugs shoot at wrong dorection based on element ballistics but when i kept it at 1000-1004 with less than 10mph wind it shoots accurately upto to 350m.. 350is the limit of “safe distance” i can shoot.. thanks for the vid 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I shot 50 FP with the Maverick last year, but with the standard barrel and those speeds it was not a success in regard to accuracy I have not yet tried the same with the heavy liner as i feel mine are just about as ( insert flood of foul words here ) stock 600 mm barrel. I have actually contemplated if you could try my 700 mm heavy barrel out in your Impact.
