A DIY pole mount install and review of the Accurite 5-IN-1 weather station. Very simple pole install for the weather station using 3/4 inch steel pipe, concrete, elbow grease, and patience.

I believe the solar panel only operates a small internal fan so it can accurately gauge the temperature. If not for the fan it would read higher than the ambient temperature. No battery charging is taking place.

Your correct about solar panel facing south, but it is needed for wind direction orientation. I got tired of that “brand” and went to ambient weather and can’t believe what you can do for about $50 more dollars. You can view your data from anywhere in the world and your part of a “network” of other stations around your town, county, state, etc

One thing I learned from my LaCrosse WS-1611-IT is the signal was dropping out a lot. Found a smart meter on my house was on the same frequency as the weather station. Finally got the transmitter far enough away from it. It is now working great.

Fred Marlin I did not have that issue with the smart meter for the weather sensor. But the smart meter does interfere with our driveway alarm system!

I have a similar unit. We use alkaline batteries in ours all the time. And we live in a climate where it gets to -40 degrees at times. We only replace the batteries every 2-3 years.

Good to know. The manual for this says that for cold climates lithium batteries were required. I just stuck with the manual for warranty purposes.

Thanks for the video. Looking to purchase a PWS and trying to figure out best way to install and mount. Your method looks good. Your video indicated that it was still a bit wobbly and you may need more cement. How did that turn out? Also, when the lithium batteries die, how easy/difficult will it before you to replace at that height?

cubfan65 there was no need for cement. After a few rains everything compacted nicely. When the batteries die, my hope is that I’ll be able to unscrew the pipe sections to get to the top. A pipe wrench will definitely get the job done. So far, the batteries have done just fine. However, the station is technically powered by the solar panel on top. I think the batteries are an emergency backup. We’ve been down to almost -30 this past winter and no problems yet!

What did you use to screw the station to the steel? The screws it comes with our tiny.

What about lightning striking the unit? What's the remedy to safeguard against being hit?

I have the same question regarding lightning strike. I used a pcv pipe for a pole for my 5-in-1. It is about 10ft tall. It might flex if I try to go higher. Would like to get it higher if I can.

@@bravoone17 I used an old Purple Martin pole stand - it's about 15-20 feet long and still had the concrete attached. Used a small level on all side of the pole. Looks great and works fine. I figure it's galvanized steel and in the ground far enough to ground out any electricity - also right near the cyclone fence.

How did you make sure it was level?

Echoing Mist When installing the sensor on the pipe, I made sure to check for level and plumb. One each section of the pipe was installed I checked for level and plumb as well. I have a magnetic level that will stick while adjustments are made. Level became a hair off on the top section because I believe there was a twist in the pipe I couldn’t correct. But the bubble was still within the level spec lines for the most part.

Howling Farms Alright. Thank you for responding. Might install my 5 in 1 like that in the future. My current mount is a tripod and it works fine

Howling Farms Also, video was good. Thanks for making one covering how you mounted yours

Echoing Mist This particular accurate sensor requires a 30ft mount for proper wind readings. There wasn’t a way for me to get those heights unless I mounted poles on the house or barn. I looked in to antenna mounts that are heavy duty, but they’d need guide wires at those heights. We will see how this mount stands up to our brutal winter. Our frost line is close to 52” here in Michigan. Hopefully it doesn’t get pushed up! Will be checking level and plumb in the spring for differences when the ground thaws.

Your DIY mast is great. Unfortunately you topped it with AccuRite garbage.

@Don'tBlameMe Could you recommand a better unit? I've had a Accurite weather station for many many years without any issues. But always interested in upgrades.
