We've also seen what Phoenix is like in a romantic relationship, even if he was younger at the time. He doted on Dahlia and treated like a queen, ate glass so she wouldn't go to jail, he was an extreme romantic. Some people would say this makes him a bottom but phoenix isn't that gullible anymore, especially after case 2-4, case 3-4, and his disbarment. His ability to hold on to sentimental romantics and knowing who to trust makes him a top.

People who writes fanfic dont actually tag top/bot on their fic that much so the more common bottom is Miles based on what i have read and seen on twitter/pixiv/ao3. Both are popular, but Narumitsu (top Phoenix) is quite a bit more popular than Mitsunaru (top Edgeworth) in Japan, you can check their pixiv tags for proof. (Sigh, my apologies in advance, this is probably gonna be long, you and anyone else that happens to be reading this, feel free to skip it. I write what I do bc I wanna, not to force/expect others read it, and as such, othwrs are equally free to read it or skip it. English isn't my first language and this is a topic that can end up getting up to fiery discussions/misunderstandings, so in my attempt to be as clear/specific as possible while using a language that doesn't come naturally to me I most likely will make this way, way too long. Again, my apologies, you're 100% free to not read this, I'm just giving my 2 cents bc I want to, that's all) Alright, so you see, Edgeworth and Phoenix as the characters we know are pretty unique in the sense they aren't much like what the production team originally intended for them to be. Nick and Edgy, both as separate individuals and their dynamic as a whole had more similarities in their design both visually and writing wise with the main character and the antagonist of Ghost Trick respectively. (both of which I won't name, nor would I recommend looking up anything at all about them unless you've played that game already, as that's a unique mystery story where even the mere names of both the MC and the antagonist are part of the most important, endgame, heavy-hitting, socks-knocking plot twists in that narrative.) Enter the head character designer and one of the main artists for the AA trilogy, Kumiko Suekane, who's a mangaka well known for her BL doujins and original works. She's the one who redesigned Nick and Edgy conceptually to what we know now, and with Edgeworth in particular, it was practically a 180°. The changes she proposed were well received by the rest of the production team, including the main writer, director and original creator, Shu Takumi. Now you see, Suekane as a bonafide BL fan intentionally added BL elements and characteristics into Phoenix and Edgeworth that would end up seeping into their new dynamic (just as she intended since the start), and one might ask, what does all that information which is already relatively well-known in the AA fandom have to do with JP fans reading more of a Narumitsu dynamic than a Mitsunaru dynamic in that relationship? That's bc of the age said dynamic was created and the experience of who conceived said dynamic. The 90's-00's in lgbtq+ representation in manga is equally iconic for its bold takes of serious, complicated, dark themes and at the same time infamous for being very fetishistic, homophobic, for their romanticization of toxic & non-con relationships, and for portraying all kinds of stereotypes to the point of oftentimes making the characters into caricatures. Nevertheless, said gay stereotypes were for a very long time not only the only way a lot of JP writers knew how to portray LGBTQ+ individuals, but also, a way for writers to tell their audiences, who they knew were already familiar with said stereotypes, that a particular character is meant to be read LGBTQ+ outside of explicitly BL/GL works. A very common trope for BL in Japan for decades and up until this day is "average dude x nearly perfect guy acknowledged as attractive by everyone", with a key difference: in the 90's-00's specially it was extremely common to portray the average dude as the top in those relationships. Suekane not only knew that and applied it to Phoenix and Edgeworth in their dynamic, but went and made sure to make Edgeworth the most stereotypically gay as she could, and in JP, the most character who's more easy/obvious to read as gay tends to also be read as the bottom in ship. She, as both a BL reader and writer, knew this fully well, and as such, made Edgy the stereotypically gay one bc she intended for the target audience (JP fans) to read him as the bottom. Same exact thing happens with the Yakuza/Ryu Ga Gotoku franchise where in Japan, most read the MC's rival, who's coded as a depraved bisexual and has shown physical attraction to other men including the MC, as the bottom in that ship, while in the west the rival's assertiveness in the dynamic results in the western fandom reading him as the top and MC as the bottom. Really interesting stuff!
I mean top/bottom *don’t* refer to who is dominant and submissive, though it’s a common for the two to be conflated, especially by *the straights*(tm) as its a heteronormative assumption that the person being penetrated is submissive when the two arent linked at all. I absolutely agree though, I also think Miles is way too self-monitored, stressed and powerful in his real life to want to carry that into the bedroom with phoenix (he dommed gumshoe tho frfr) - let’s not forget how he acts outside of his prosecutor duties - like trying really hard to be enthusiastic and learn how to lean on/defer to other people post 1-4. I totally agree with you on this point. Like when you say you ship Narumitsu, people will assume that you ship Phoenix top x Miles bottom (Thats why if its about Miles top x Phoenix bottom they have to add additional tags or warning first). As a vietnamese, i can tell the same goes for vietnamese fandom. I think it's because of the top/bottom dynamic most people interested in where the top is an extroverted dog type and the bottom is a tsundere cat type. Well, Phoenix and Miles fit that.
And I want to say that Wright knows Edgeworth's emotional patterns and will choose the appropriate way to communicate with him. It will not harm Edgeworth's self-esteem and arrogance, but will make him relax and happy. I think this is also a kind of "power" that makes wright look more like a top
Personally I do think Phoenix has enough top energy I just think it's OOC when people make him mean. I feel like he'd be a good partner, probably gentle unless requested otherwise.

Sexual preferences that are analyzed from a non-sexual perspective of someone are very interesting because you do never truly know what you're getting; someone can be absolutely loud and dominating in a social context but because of that, they may want something unlike that to catch a break. Or maybe that's what they'd want to do in bed, too, because that's what they're comfortable with and are used to. I think one could argue Phoenix being a bottom just because of how little information he reveals about himself. He never told Maya about him and Edgeworth's past until the third case; he refused to tell Edgeworth about Dahlia even when Edgeworth needed it for the purposes of a case. Phoenix even recognized he would never tell Edgeworth directly and apologized for it despite knowing he would still not tell him. This shows a big fear of vulnerability, and often what people fear is what they desire in a sexual relationship because they never get to experience that in other faucets of life, ergo, Phoenix wanting to be dominated in bed. However you COULD flip that on it's head and say since Edgeworth is so quick to tell Phoenix things, he desires to be vulnerable outright but never says it. There's other things I could say too but I'm lazy. As I'm sure we're all aware, people's sexual preferences can't be determined even when these games show their deep thoughts and personalities. However I am a believer in Edgeworth being a bottom for a multitude of reasons, many of which you stated. Fun fact for you if you didn't know, one of the developers who worked on Ace Attorney by the name of Kumiko Suekane publishes yaoi mangas herself under a pen name Ryo Mutobe, and she was instrumental to helping with the original game. for research purposes of course, just like your journey on AO3, I went to look for her (explicit) yaoi mangas to see what they were like. One of them called 'Retsujou' has two main characters that just. look. like Miles and Phoenix. it's not even subtle! In that manga though, not-Miles is the top, so make of that what you will😂

ok but no wait hear me out, not-miles is the top BUT she had reversed their roles for the manga.. so Not-Miles's role would match Phoenix more and Not-Phoenix's role would be more like Miles's... but its also not a 1:1 thing because Not-Miles IS a lot like Miles in not just appearance obviously but general personality/temperament and background (they're both rich boys LMAO) and Not-Phoenix is of course a lot like Phoenix in many ways besides just appearance, so... I guess it's kinda more like if there were an AU where they switched roles -- in the game, Phoenix is the one who seeks out Miles and becomes a lawyer for him, but in the manga, it's actually Not-Miles who does a similar thing (buying the company where his childhood friend Not-Phoenix works just to be around him).... Basically I think this would actually mean more that Phoenix (Actual Phoenix LMAO) is the top and Miles is the bottom.......

Edgeworth is a no-touch dom. The issue with seeing him as a top is assuming he'd use what God gave him. He knows he's so submissive and touch-starved that even the slightest hint of affection will make him melt, so my man's got an array of tools and toys to tie you up and make sure you never lay a finger on him.

Ok so I just started these games just got to the sencond game last case and my Husband and I had this whole story of phoenix and edgeworth having maya and peal as daughters. Every other sentence by my husband was “but edgeworth what about our “spoiler” kidnapped child.” Then me being like “I may not love you anymore but damn I love our children.” At the end of it we were like so are they dating again or are they taking a break. I don’t know my brain just went off the deep end.
What are we even talking about here. Look I'm not going to argue with the idea that Edgeworth COULD bottom. But i think it is utterly absurd to say that he IS a bottom, inherently. It simply does not make sense. I understand that to people, Edgeworth reads as repressed and that is why they find more appeal in the gap moe between his "Demon Prosecutor" persona and what they assume he would be like when hot and bothered. Most people think this gap can only exist if he is a bottom. Which, for one, is simply not true. It just speaks to a personal preference. Edgeworth as a character, is not interested at all, he is simply not. So him being interested is already bridging the gap. Him being disheveled and needy as a top, is just as unusual for him as being disheveled and needy as a bottom. The fact is, that on average, people just like seeing the bottom be the one that's disheveled and needy more than they do the top. So they have an easier time suspending their disbelief of Edgeworth being interested in doing it at all, if he isn't initiating. A classic false equivalence that comes from thinking that this isn't something the bottom participates in, it's something being done to them. We can definitively say that Edgeworth wouldn't flirt with someone. Which is why people gravitate more towards him instead being flirted with, even tho in reality, he is likely just as uninterested in that. He isn't interested in doing someone and he is just as uninterested in someone doing him. If you want him to be interested, if it's a particular person that makes him interested, then either is just as likely, it's not concrete to say in which way his hipothetical attraction towards the person will develop. So, that argument comes down to personal preference. Whatever gets your dick hard. Not in any objective reading of the character. From another perspective. This premise only really works if you assume that Edgeworth's entire personality is only a facade under which he hides his vulnerabilities, or in this case a desire to be dominated himself. Which, in my opinion, Is a false premise, as Edgeworth is continuously shown to be a more open and vulnerable person than he is given credit for. Especially with Phoenix. He has no problem being voluntarily open around Phoenix, especially as the games progress chronologically, but his personality always remains the same, he never becomes more submissibe around him, even when being truly vulnerable. He is still very much the same character. So the premise that a situation that requires vulnerability would somehow alter his personality, isn't viable. He would still be the same, Edgeworth. The same Edgeworth that is driven, domineering, very particular about being on top of things. Which brings me to my final point. Phoenix. Phoenix, is just submissive. There is no question about that, the entire game is him just getting pushed, ordered and whipped around. By everyone. Unlike Edgeworth, Pheonix is a more obvious Switch. He is someone that prioritizes making their partner happy in a relationship, so you can see him being a service top, just as well as a really fucking chatty bottom. It would genuinely depend on his partner. So in conclusion. Miles Edgeworth could bend and press someone up against the chief prosecutor's desk, telling them to keep it down in a Edgeworth-like manner. And considering that he is willing to indulge Pheonix, he would most likely not oppose him if he initiates an interaction where Edgeworth is the bottom. If you can't see both of these as in character for him, there is an issue with your skill set. Rest in Piece, Bozo.
Sorry but I want to say something about Phoenix. I don't think Phoenix is just a submissive. He is easy-going and gentle. But he also has his own strength and persistence In chapters 2-4, when he misunderstands edgeworth as his enemy, he doesn't hesitate to unleash his aggression. Until the two friends have patched things up. Such is his persistence and strength. Having a sense of humor, being agreeable to others, and being willing to make others happy (including edgeworth) never means being powerless, and being a submissive. As for phonix being wheeled around by prosecutors in the game, it's in the service of gameplay and comedy. And he will win in the end. In the game, we can also know that Phoenix knows Edgeworth's emotional pattern, knows how to communicate with Edgeworth correctly, will not hurt Edgeworth's pride and self-esteem, and will let him relax. In terms of communication skills and familiarity with his partner's moods, Edgeworth seems to be the less experienced one - although he becomes more candid as the series progresses. Given that we're talking about their private model, not their work model. So in my opinion, it's more likely that Wright indulge edgeworth, and I agree that Wright doesn't care about top or bottom, so the conclusion is that they can switch. Finally, I think edgeworth, although a tough man, would not be very tough with Wright, but rather respect Wright's wishes.

I was just reaching the conclusion and felt like I didn't really need to describe him as much, as he is very easy to read as a character (in my opinion at least). I did think about going a bit into how the trusting relationship between him and Edgeworth, as that does play into the other part of my point about him. In comparison to Edgeworth, I think he is definitely more submissive. Maybe the better word to describe it would be serviceable? He is very willing to be of service to people, go along with certain things rather than protest them, which requires some dergee of submissiveness. As for him being the one that indulges Edgeworth, I feel like that is a slightly incorrect reading. I used that turn of phrase to refer to Edgeworth, as Edgeworth is the more "particular" one of the two, he is the one that's ultimately more fussy and he is the one that is more likely to view these interactions as frivolous, despite enjoying them. So he "indulges" Pheonix when Pheonix initiates, he is more coy about it. He is willing to engage in these frivolous actions, because he likes indulging Pheonix. Whereas, Pheonix isn't really indulging Edgeworth, because, well, like I said Pheonix is a more obvious switch, he is really fine and into either, whether he is initiating or not. And whether he is a bottom or top, he is more likely to initiate as both. Edgeworth, in my opinion, is more likely to actively initiate an interaction if he Is the top in the situation. Where as being a bottom is more reactionary. So when he isn't initiating he is indulging. If that makes sense. Also. If you go back and look at most of their interactions. Edgeworth is actually a REALLY straightforward guy, between the two of them maybe ever more so than Pheonix at times. I think, because of his character archetype (the brooding rival), people incorrectly assume that he lacks communication skills, but he is actually really good at being tuned into what Pheonix is thinking or feeling and communicating with him about it. Their whole thing is that they are both really aware of and level with eachother.
Thanks for the discussion. But maybe I have a different definition of strength. Truly powerful people don't need to flex their muscles very often. One does not need to constantly oppose him in order to appear powerful/not submissive. In fact, wright is very strong when he thinks his values are being violated. For example, in chapters 2-4, even edgeworth, Wright will attack him mercilessly. In chapters 1-4, he doesn't trust Edgeworth's confession at all, he trusts his own judgment more. In chapters 2-3, when maya mentions Edgeworth, he gets angry and rude because maya violates his "never mention edgeworth again." In chapters 3-5, he is very stubborn and insists on facing his ex-girlfriend's case himself. I think sometimes people overlook Wright's sense of power and think he's just a submissive, love-pleasing sweetheart. Wright is actually the kind of person who is gentle on the surface, but has his own principles inside. Second, it's also possible that our definitions of initiating are not the same. Wright's behavior is not frivolous, he is sometimes funny, but more often he expresses feelings and puts them into practice. In the game, Edgeworth doesn't seem to think Wright's behavior is childish and frivolous, he respects Wright (as an opponent), and doesn't force himself to cooperate with Wright just because he likes it. But we can agree to disagree on that. Finally, I strongly agree that Edgeworth is sometimes more forthright than Wright. He was a man of action, not one to sit around and wait for Wright to show his love. Early in the game, though, he didn't fit in with Wright's enthusiasm, and was awkward because he wasn't close to people for so long. So at least at the beginning of the relationship, Wright was the facilitator, and he knew how to get along with Edgeworth. The game also shows Wright's consideration for Edgeworth (not in terms of court cooperation, but in terms of his personal understanding of Edgeworth).
