Ace told me years ago that it can be sloppy, miss a note or three, but don't lose the feeling or the groove. Sometimes he misses notes, I don't care it still sounds awesome!!

Well let me tell you the story of a man called Alexi Laiho. Once upon a time he went through the motions of playing note after note with surgical precision. Now after years of touring and drinking he's let himself go, and has neither technique nor feel

Many people don't understand the influence Ace had on so many guitar players and bands. The simple fact is back in the 70's and 80's so many people had a go at guitar because of Ace. His playing sounds cool. He has a style, look and sound that's simply him. He doesn't copy other artists and stays true to his art. Sure I'm a Ace fan but I know a real rock star when I see one.

One of the things Ace left out. For a long time, MSG had these huge 50 posters on the front of the building, each one representing the different types of events the venue hosted. An NBA basketball player, an NHL hockey player, a boxer, etc. and a picture of Ace with his smoking guitar was the picture representing rock concerts.

I wish all the young guitarist's and technical guru's would go watch/listen to Ace playing live back in his heyday 76-78? He had an excellent flow/tone/vibrato and squeezed every ounce a feel tone and emotion from every note he played? His harmonic picking style mixed with his deep vibrato made him stand out amongst other guitarists of the time using his limited technical ability and speed. His leads / solos were like another vocal part of the song and could pull you in like they were words. Obviously drugs and alcohol and lack of practicing stopped him from progressing and left him sounding the way he does now. And that's fine he has nothing to prove he already did back in the day. I strongly advise even the most proficient musicians to go back watch what he did live, see and feel what he was doing? and actually try to learn something from him to make yourselves better lead guitarist's. There's something that almost all technical guitarists are missing and that's learning to breathe and give air and space between notes? It's more how you say it? Than how technical or fast? A solo or lead is nothing if it can't be hummed or remembered? Anyhow yes I do not like seeing Ace doing these videos nowadays it does make me cringe but I dare any of you technical musicians to make a video of yourself standing up with your guitar strap down lower not hiked up to your chest, and look straight ahead moving around and play one of his live solos to any song you like and let's see how you sound? It doesn't count if you just play the notes you have to show that you can pull off what he did straight through Marshall no reverb or effects and get the results he did live. Big tasty bends, pinch harmonics that fall off a ghost bend and do the trills and alternate triads and make it all flow. 👍 Please post on comments

No doubt, I couldn't agree more. Even back in the 70's that was my favorite solo of his. As a guitarist who has been playing since the 70's, I am pretty capable, and can play the solo from Shock Me pretty spot on, but the solo from Strange Ways is nearly impossible to duplicate. He was really in the zone on that one, with his playing drifting in and out of feedback, and alternating between inside and outside of the actual key of the song. Still my favorite of his---very Hendrix inspired.

Ace is a Guitar God Nuff said ! Friedman states that Ace took a limited vocabulary and did more with it than many of his peers during that time. He mentions that Ace's solos had direction whereas Pages solos a lot of the times were random. That if you needle dropped, you would know its Ace...and that with many other guitarist during that time, they were all interchangeable. Absolutely one of my biggest guitar heros. His style is so old-school bluesy and ballsy! I love how he is having several minor mishits and not everything is in perfect time and sloppy, etc. which gives it that real and authentic rock sound and feeling. I see so many musicians these days focusing way too much on clean picking, speed, theoretical right but predictable soloing and technique over the human feeling!

I find it hard to believe there's haters on here. But I'm not surprised either. Can't we just respect and honor a super cool rock god elder who happens to also be a really nice guy? You have to look at this in perspective. Here's a guy who was a rather accomplished guitarist. He was in one of the biggest selling bands of all time and was able to sell out arenas anywhere, any night, anytime around the entire world. Quite impressive by any standards. My challenge to the haters who can shred better than him is to accomplish what he has and then when you're 63 (with arthritis) get up there and shred for us on RU-vid with Guitar Center interviewing you. Let's see if you can make it happen. ready set go...

I love the simplified approach! "The guitar shows 3 pickups, but there's only one connected because I always use the treble pickup...through a Marshall amp...without a lot of effects, usually when I'm playing live I'll have my volume down to 7 or and when it comes time for a solo I'll turn it to 10, and the sound's there."-Ace Frehley

Amazing the number of people dissing on Ace's playing, yet when I watched and re-watched the video he's playing as clean and fast as I've seen him in quite some time. For a dude in his mid 60's who I'm sure has lost some dexterity over the years, as we all do with age, I'll take him over all of his contemporaries (save Alex Lifeson from Rush) who are still out touring.

Amazing the number of people who could outplay Ace but can't compose a decent solo like Ace Frehley has done on just about every track over the years. That takes a certain je ne sais quoi which many players lack.

Ace is a legendary Rock Icon, people constantly knock him, I think he's playing fine. Many rock guitarists have been playing similar riffs for many years. Ace took it to the next level. Many here say they can play better, make a you tube video, let's see what you've got. Ace has been playing since the 1970's so many of you have heard similar riffs. In that time it was a big thing, today it's common and don't forget, Ace created some awesome riffs that he's recognized not only in the USA for but also around the world. He's a cool guy and knows and has played with other rock icons on stage. Some here want to talk about sloppy guitar playing. Pick an artist, they all have had an off night ! Ace Frehley, one of my all time favorites !

Not everybody can be Steve Vai. A wise, older musician once told me that all the money is made on the first three frets of a guitar. There are a lot of people who can sling arpeggios and fast licks all day long, between slinging drinks or burgers... but writing great riffs and playing with a great sense of melody and feeling are what people really want to hear, and Ace is a great example of that. If you want speed licks and sweeps, listen to Yngwie.
