Pretty much, yes. I just prefer to record onto 8mm/Hi8 and I also think the on-board sound on many old handycams is better.

@@CycloneCordVHS that’s nuts, it sounds like it was recorded through a wall. I’ve been watching a few clips from recent Ace shows and then your one popped up. Maybe compare them. An off the shelf iPhone with no external microphone will record far better audio than tech from thirty years ago. And o say that as someone who loved my old Sony 8mm handycam. And 1985 JVC VHS-C before that.
