Acer Aspire Switch 10 Won't Turn On - How to Reset Fix and Restart Laptop

On my Acer Aspire Switch 10 laptop, I just ran into a problem with it not turning on. There’s actually another issue I found as you’ll see later in the video but I’m not completely sure if both problems are related or not. So when I hit the power button, nothing happens. I noticed that the power light is not on even though it’s plugged in. But when I unplugged then plugged it back in, the power light came back on.
This is the second Switch 10 I own that has had this problem. I’ve read online people using different button combinations that worked. You might see various dialogue screens show up after this reset. After logging in, this is where I found my next problem. As soon as I connected the keyboard, the computer would shut off. I reset the computer several times and each time it would shut off as soon as I connected the keyboard. When it’s connected, the reset trick wouldn’t work. The only way I could reset the laptop was without the keyboard.
I did manage to get the computer to stay on for a little bit when the computer was only open part way. But when I opened it up more, it shut off again. This led me to believe that this new problem was in the hinge. For a week I couldn’t figure this out. Then one day I started flexing the hinge and opening the laptop as far as it could go. It was then I was able to keep the laptop on while connected to the keyboard. The flexing must’ve twisted something back in place. I think the keyboard was triggering sleep mode or something. But it all seems to be working now.

omg thank you so much for this video. I have two switch 10’s as well. the first one had the same issue when we bought the pair. and I swear my boyfriend “overcharged” his which is why I couldn’t get it to turn on. googled why my tablet won’t turn on and you where the first video i clicked on and second video hit showing on google. what I would call what you’ve done is a soft reset, idk if it’s an actual term. but after I did what you said tablet powered on like normal with no messages of any kind. still thank you.

My Aspire 10 has worked fine for about a year. It was fully charged yesterday but it wouldn't power-up this morning when I started it up, hooked to the power supply. The power supply light was on (blue) meaning it was still fully charged. I tried disconnecting the keyboard and starting it bare (nothing attached)...still no joy. When I disconnected the power supply, the power light went off. I connected a USB mini-port and even though the tablet was still off, the power light on the mini-USB hub came on. I knew then that the laptop battery had power and the unit must be internally on even though the display was off. I tried toggling the Fn F5 key a couple times to see if the display would come on...still no joy. I went online and found this troubleshooting technique. I kept the monitor disconnected from the keyboard and did the (power) + (hold Volume key down) routine. After 30 seconds, the display did come on. I reattached the keyboard and the mouse and it stayed on...voila!

Excellent! I'm really glad you got your laptop working again! At the time I made this video, I thought the keyboard was part of the problem but I realized the keyboard was a separate problem that didn't necessarily have to be included in this video. But at least you're up and running now!

I'm in the shit! After installing a missing driver package on my computer (Acer Aspire SW5-011 tablet) a restart was essential. I restarted and then the BIOS is automatically updated at startup ... then the device does not turn on. I tried to combine the keys Power + volume down nothing changes. Please help me

Sorry about your computer problem! Your power issue might be different than the one my video is solving. Have you tried to unplug the computer for a couple of minutes then plug back in and try it again? Maybe try with the keyboard detached. Also try with keyboard detected and unplugged from your AC plug. Also try detached keyboard with AC plugged in.

Hi, i have not yet tried with the keyboard connect i will do it. But I tried several times the other methods! I think it's the BIOS update that caused this ... if it is, is it not possible to remove the CMOS battery? Just a concern. thank you in advance ! Thank you !!! this worked for me although I had a different problem: the laptop won't do anything after a major Win10 home/32bit update ran but didn't finished. Acer was still "on", but would not accept any input from keyboard , it won't even switch off - until I pressed Power + Volume down for about 20 sec. as you suggested. The Acer rebooted and completed the update. (Sorry for my poor english). Thumbs UP and many thanks al the way from Germany to you :-)

Usually it's not likely that the computer will overcharge. I've left my Acer Switch 10 plugged in for weeks and never overcharged.

Mine has black lines on it. How do I go about fixing that? At first it only had a few and the lines would shift. Now I only have a thin line of screen that works while the rest is black lines.

Hmmm! That could indicate a problem with the screen. It might be running fine but you just can’t see what it should be displaying. I actually have a mini HDMI cable where I could hook it up to an HDTV to see if the computer is actually running. But if your monitor isn’t working I’m not sure what else you can do. Sorry!

I have the acer switch 10 and have a similar problem. The computer turns on while connected to the ac adapter, but as soon as I disconnect it it lasts for a minute and switches off. The battery is charged ,its in great condition (battery info). I tried resetting and reinstalling windows on it and same problem. I think its a hardware problem. It might be the on button, it might get stuck and switches off. Help

On my Switch 10 I had to get a new keyboard to fix the other problem I was having. Does your Switch 10 work ok without the keyboard attached?

@@TheRenderQ works fine with or without the keyboard, but as soon as I disconnect it from the ac adapter it last about a minute. I thought it was the battery but its good, Ive checked it. So I think its a hardware problem. there are too many black tapes holding ribbon cables in. Im going to open mine in a little bit, I will check the ribbon cable that goes from the on switch to the mainboard, and the ones that go to the battery. I tried battery info and the app says my battery is healthy and it charges to 100%, even the blue led shows its charged. I updated the bios too. tried just about everything .. I need to find out because its a common problem. I really like the tablet , and it works fine except that I have to have it plugged in..

I have the same kind of tablet acer 2 in 1, in black. The battery went low very fast, then it won't charge, the orange led does not light up, and i cannot switch it on. I opened it up to see , same problem again. I can hear a sound when pushing the power button then it stops. What to do?

Sorry you’re having issues with your Acer laptop. I’m not exactly sure what you can do. This is a pretty old laptop and I have 2 of them. Recently one of mine won’t recognize the hard drive anymore so it can’t boot up. The other one started oozing sticky adhesive stuff out of the top and the LCD monitor is all messed up internally with very bright and very dark areas. So my laptops are having major issues. Have you tried wiggling the power cord to see if you get the charging LED to light up? It could be a problem with the cord or AC adapter. I would start looking into that first. Other than that I’m not sure what else to do. Did you try it with the keyboard removed? Hopefully your laptop isn’t dead! Thanks for watching!

@@TheRenderQ Thanks for helping out , I have tried it both by removing the keyboard and wiggling the cord. The same cord charges other devices so that way I could see if it was not working too. No LED light still, but the motherboard does become hot so it shows me the electricity goes through! It still have hope because I still hear that little noise everytime I push the power button even if the combination with the volume one doesn't work anymore - and unfortunately most of my files are here.I SO wish it is just a battery problem!! I am gonna try to put it on charge for a whole day to see.

This video has helped me twice! Once when I couldn't get my switch 10 to turn on, the other when the keyboard was freaking out. Turns out it has something to do with the magnets that hold the keyboard in place, sometimes they don't click back into place properly, and if you move it on the hinge or take it off and put it back on a few times, it usually fixes itself.

I bought this for myself for university as my laptop is too heavy. It's nothing but trouble, and is the biggest pile of rubbish ever. I have tried every you tube video to fix it, now it won't even switch on or charge up. I can't afford to have it fixed as I'm a pensioner and had to save hard for it. Thanks, Acer for nothing.

Sorry about your troubles with the Switch 10! In addition to my power problems, I found that my keyboard was malfunctioning and causing the computer to shut off immediately when I connected the 2 pieces. I think something in my hinge broke so it was stuck in sleep mode. It thought the hinge was closed even when it was open. However mine would work without the keyboard. Have you tried doing the power up trick shown in the video without the keyboard attached? Mine would not power up at all with the keyboard attached. Also, with the keyboard detached, unplug and then plug in the power cord and see if the charging light turns on. If it does, you should be able to hold down the power and volume down buttons like in the video to get your computer running again. However, in my case I had to get a replacement keyboard and the computer works like it should now.

Did you have a password on the laptop before? You should've seen the password login every time you do a restart of the computer. Hopefully you get logged back into your computer. You might be able to try to log into your account at Microsoft.com and do the Forgot Password routine.

My Acer Aspire SW5-012 does it too. The first time I thought it might be DEAD dead, but hoped that maybe I pressed the power button too long or not long enough. I kept trying and when I detached the screen it worked. But doing that doesn't ALWAYS work. Just today I kept pressing the power button and after like the 20th time it powered on and then off quickly. The next time I pressed the power button it powered up. I just leave it in hibernate overnight now.

actually once I reset my Acer aspire snap hinge 10 e,then my laptop didn't get on,then my uncle formatted it then it at least got on but it doesn't start.Acer comes written on the screen but it does not have the loading circle icon below and it doesn't start to the desktop.Only Acer comes written on black screen and it does come again and again.I tried your method and there comes an option in white screen:Boot option menu below it Windows boot manager and below it ESC to exit option. Okay, here's my problem. I turn on my lenovo laptop this morning, then I did what I always before anything else which is run a virus scan to check for any problems. My laptop is a lenovo amd radeon r9 m385x. When I ran driver booster it told me that there was a driver that needed to be updated(which was a lie), then I download it and installed it, then suddenly my laptop restarts by itself, I log back in, then again I ran my programs to check for viruses and then I got again the same message about that driver, did it again and again it restarts. But now after the lenovo logo finishes loading, I get a bright black screen and the power light is on but there's no display. I decided to force shut my laptop 3 times but it's no displaying anything. I did everything I know about possible solutions to fix this problem but nothing worked. AMD Radeon in my opinion is the worst graphic cards in the market cause I have been experiencing a lot of problems after updates and now it's this problem. And I know that my laptop is dead even if the power is still on because I had another laptop that did the same thing, power on but no display. It goes to show that Microsoft's updates are shit, they never work and they give more problems instead of fixing them. AMD too is a shitty ass card.

Re. Blank out with keyboard. I am BC when it comes to computers. Years ago, I was advised to remove battery from problem computer(usually worked) what I have found with aspire 10 is to leave it connected to keyboard and just keep the "please wait" running. I then remove mains power and let it drain the battery power (usually over a 48 hour period). When I then switch back on (having reconnected mains power). It starts back up normally (no files lost)

In another video was explained that the flat cable running over the battery pack was pulled loose by the repeating flexing of the cabin. Re-insert, and stick a piece of strong tape over the flat cable/battery pack, asuring a bit of room to move..

It worked, but my issue was a significant bit different. First, it's an Alpha 12 Switch Sa5-271 2-in-1, like the MS Surface. After replacing a bulging battery, the Acer would only show the logo. It would not go into the BIOS or any kind of recovery. Had tried pressing F2 during boot, then took off the keyboard and did Volume Up and Power, releasing Power when the screen turned on, but again the Acer logo would appear and go no further. After watching your video, I thought, "Why not?" and did Volume Down and Power... and sure enough, the black screen with the circle of dots spinning appeared. So thanks for posting! Hope you (and I) get many more good years out of these Acers!

My acer randomly didn’t turn on after I tried repeatedly holding down the power, the charging light didn’t come on once i plugged it in, what do I do?

Sorry you're still having issues with your Acer. The solution I described in the video is the only thing that worked for me. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Helped, nov 22 2019. After a windows update the screen was black with scunched text. After resets still on keyboard just black. It was reset off keyboard that restored use

Acer laptop purchased from Tesco almost a year ago. There has been a problem with the hardware from the start. Returned the laptop to Tesco who sent it back to the agent. After approximately three weeks it came back only to have the same problem. Again Tesco was contacted. Tesco's support, was not in the least bit helpful, they were rude and disrespectful. Suffice to say Tesco's have refused to refund or replace the laptop.

You should be able to do the reset described in the video if the light is blue. Blue just means your laptop is fully charged. I actually had 2 issues going on with this computer at the time I shot this video. So the blue or orange light doesn't affect the way you do the reset described in the video. I hope you get your laptop working again!

This was very similar to my problem. I had the Recovery screen and then lost it because restarting was the problem. I couldn't login. However, I persevered using your tips, got the Recovery screen back and did a Refresh. All is good. Thank you!!! ---Also folks. Holding the power button and the down volume takes you to the recovery section of your phone. Savor these tips and use them on different devices.

You helped me to get a different screen I was unable to get anything except the date page after trying to reset it like you showed holding the power and volume down button made the computer go to working on updates 100 percent complete Dont turn off your computer. I am not sure if it will move on for me to get to do the factory reset or not

Actually leave it for awhile like that. One time I kept resetting it when it was on an update screen or the Acer logo. Because I kept resetting with the power and volume down button I couldn't get the Switch 10 to boot up. But one time I left it on for awhile and eventually when I checked my desktop was back! Hope you get your computer back up and running again!
