Achilles tendon stretches can keep this tendon loose and help prevent injuries. Read Doctor Jo’s blog post about this video at www.askdoctorjo...
The Achilles tendon can get very tight when it is irritated or injured, and it is important to keep it stretched out. Here are three simple stretches to keep the Achilles tendon loose.
The first stretch is called a runner's stretch. You want to lean against a wall or something sturdy. Place the foot you want to stretch behind you. Make sure to keep your heel down and your toes forward pointing towards the wall. With the other foot in front of you, like you are in a lunge position, bend your knee towards the wall until you feel a stretch through your back leg. Try to keep your back leg as straight as possible. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, and do it three times.
Next, put your toes against the wall with your heel on the ground. The closer you can get your heel to the wall, the stronger the stretch. Keeping your heel down, lean into the wall. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, and do it three times.
The last stretch you can do standing on a step or curb. Place the ball of your foot on the edge of the step and relax your heel downwards. Hold for 30 seconds and do it 3 times.

Hey Doctor, you have always been a life-saver for me...you are best...I do a daily jog of around 4K and I agree that my Asics are worn-out with almost 1000K. Have already ordered a new pair. Recently, I have been having discomfort in my right ankle...and I feel better by rolling my ankle or pulling it towards me...also have a mild pain in my Achilles tendon...My right foot is a bit sore first in the morning and goes away within a minute...Have been doing these 3 exercises that you have shown in this video...anything to worry about? Once again thank you for all the efforts that you put into these videos...I have liked this video and have already subscribed to your channel...

Was diagnosed with retrocalcaneal bursitis, and I heard that Achilles tendon stretches and eccentric exercises can help (and simple rest being even more important for some time). Tried some light eccentric exercise using an exercise band yesterday, and that provoked a slight return of pain. I'll have to dial this in carefully... seems like a pretty stubborn condition which I'm hoping will eventually go away completely. Thank you for the video, I'll try these!

Recovering from achilles tendon injury (insertional) I believe my tendon is recovered and building strength, but when I try to run I can feel some stiffness, these stretches are helping me. My question is, is it alright to warm the tendon before stretching? I'm using hot gel packs before this since the last thing I want is to stretch a cold tendon and tear it again :(

This is really useful Dr Jo and now I have found use for my steps which I hadn't used since I bought them. Also, I have read a lot about how static stretching before running is not a good idea but rather warming up movements. I have to say I tend to do some static stretches before and after my runs as they do stop me getting niggling little injuries.

@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 3 года назад
You're welcome. They would probably start with an x-ray, but yes, and then if it's not a bone issue, maybe an MRI to see what is going on with the Achilles since that can't be seen in an x-ray. Definitely worth getting checked out by a PT too if it's affecting your quality of life.

I got checked by the doctor but couldn’t guide me correctly and the pain still exists. Do you recommend any stretches for this? I can try them and if relieves i can follow up with you. 10years back i had the same burning situation of the heel and a doctor got that done in one sitting and I didn’t notice what he did but vaguely remember scratching my feet for a while and I recovered immediately.

I found that the second stretch in this video to be super helpful as I sometimes get pain in my achilles if I do too many miles on my kick scooter. I have a question though... do the other stretching exercises stretch different parts of the achilles? Do you need to do all 3 or is doing just one 3 times for 30 seconds good enough?
@yourdancegal
@yourdancegal 2 года назад
Could you clarify what you mean by doing each exercise 3 times for 30 seconds each? Do you mean do the first exercise for 30 seconds, take a break (for a few seconds), then repeat 2 more times. Or do all three exercices in a row, then repeat 2 more times. Or do all 3 three times a day? Wasn't sure if there should be break between each 30 seconds of stretching. Thank you!

Thank you for this video, Dr. Jo. I recently started training for a stair climbing event, so I've been climbing stairs in several locations. Unfortunately, my achilles (both legs) are very sore after one of the locations, as they steps are irregular in height and width and it takes more than "average" stair climbing effort to complete the climb. Do you recommend all three of these stretches be performed, or was the second stretch (toe on the wall stretch) an alternative to the first stretch? Also, is this a daily routine? Or would it be better to do this prior to climbing stairs?

Thanks. You can do the standing one (the runners stretch), seated by scooting to the edge of your chair, and keeping your heel down, slide your foot back and inward toward the chair. It won't be quite the same, but you should feel a stretch.

What's The best way to strengthen your Achilles heel? I have watched your video on how to stretch it I'm not sure if that's going to also strengthen it or if you need specific strengthening exercises

Hi, I was just wondering what a good alternative to this might be for achilles work? My situation is complex but I have CMT Type 1A and I had ankle fusion for this in 2014 with an achilles release procedure because my tendon had tightened so bad that I was walking on my forefoot completey and not even touching the heel. While surgery has helped, the issue has came back again and the tendon has shortened again. Is there any way I can potentially lengthen this out again with daily stretches or is it a lost cause? My question for other methods is simply because I can't push my knee forward in to the wall like you can with my foot still ALL contacting the floor, it's just not physically possible for me so what other good methods might you suggest? The stair drop one doesn't really work for me either. :(

Thanks for the video! How often should I do the achilles tendon stretches? Is there such a thing as overkill or no?
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo Год назад
You're welcome! It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.

@@AskDoctorJoif I do it multiple times a day, how much time should be inbetween the achilles tendon stretches?
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 4 месяца назад
@@cubedude8690 It really just depends on how it feels. It can be a few hours in between, or something like morning, afternoon, and evening.

Can one walk or slow run during the achilles tendinitis recovery period? My doc says recovery will take month and in between you have to rest completely . This can happen again

For Insertional Achilles tendons also these exercises work?

Great stretches. I assume best to do after exercise when loose? Or could I just take a break every hour from sitting and include in 5 minutes of stretching before sitting again?

Thanks. A quick warm up is best, but they can be done without one.

Hi Dr. Jo, Thanks for posting this. I think my achilles are tight but I'm honestly not sure. I noticed it when trying to do squats (I can't keep my heels on the floor). Will these stretches help that?
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 4 года назад
You're welcome. If it's tight Achilles, these should help. Are you sure you are doing the squats with correct form? Sometimes people will have their heels come off the floor when they aren't squatting quite right.

Thank you kit tape is good but not a fix , learning the hard way I guess. I've heard a lot about stretching and not stretching before a run what's your advice ?
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 7 лет назад
You're welcome. Yes, KT tape is definitely not a fix, but mainly a tool to help while stretching and exercising. I think it is best to warm up for 2-3 minutes and then stretch. Good luck.

Hi Joe! Pretty sure I have Achilles tendinitis again, haven't been tested yet but I also have leg pain in the side of my upper thighs, it can be quite debilitating, do you think it's related? Thank you!

I got kicked right on my achilles at a soccer game and it was shaking for like a minute and i stayed on because we had OverTime and then the next day it was cracking so much and i couldn’t put any pressure. That was a week ago. It’s gotten better with ice and rest and tape but still isn’t as good as normal. I got playoffs in 6 days what do u recommend i do to strengthen it up as much as possible. Also i can’t miss playoffs my team isn’t amazing and i’m a starting CM so i pretty much have to play

Hi Doctor Jo, thanks for the stretches, they’re great! I’m a runner and have got Haglund’s Deformity in both heels. I’ve run three marathons with it and my Chiropodist has told me they’re not getting any worse. I’ve now got a sore Achilles in one but it comes and goes and eases when I run. Would you suggest just keep stretching? Thanks, Neill from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

You're welcome. If it eases when you run, then stretching should help.

I've had achilles tendonitis for 13 years I've been managing with stretches. Back in May I got sciatica and I wasn't able to do stretches for my achilles and now it has flared up. The only exercise I do is swimming now I'm thinking of getting steroid injection what do you advise 🤔
