I'll try this, i don't think i quite have shin splints yet, But i noticed on my last run my lower legs felt really tight really fast, it ended up being a run where i had to push through pain/tightness instead of getting gassed out.
Very encouraging, thanks Benjamin! I've been procrastinating so long to get back into running due to shin splints but it's good to see positive feedback on Dr Jo's tips. Thanks for posting 👍🏻
thank you so much i’m a basketball player and i get shin splints in both shins very badly to the point where i have to sit out and now i’m doing these stretches and it’s helping me so much i couldn’t be more grateful
Thank you Doctor Jo! Your exercises in this video have cured my shin splints. I have made it a routine now to do it regularly especially before running. Please keep making more amazing videos.
Worked like magic. Thanks a ton. Had been suffering from shin pain almost after every long run. Even though there are so many videos about the shin pain in youtube - NONE OF THOSE WORKED. Going to follow these stretches before and after every run. Channel subscribed..
It's National Running Day! But you'll have a hard time celebrating if you suffer from Shin Splints. So make sure you check out my simple stretches and exercises to help prevent and relieve them.
Thank you so much for this! I've been walking to work everyday for the past 5 months, but recently (in the past two weeks) it's gotten so painful to walk that I have to sit down on the side walk and rub my legs! I even have large bumps that pop out at the end of the walk. These stretches feel so great, definitely going to do them before I walk to work!
Congrats!! Being a PT is very rewarding! With you already having knowledge in anatomy, you would probably do great in PT school! It kind of depends on what you are going for. If you want your Master's degree and you already have a Bachelor's degree, it usually takes 2 years. If you want your doctorate degree, it depends on where you go to school. It can range from 3-4 years. I think it is worth it though for sure!! Eventually all PT schools will be doctorate programs. Good luck!!
Shin splints and stress fractures can reproduce the same symptoms. If it is a stress fracture, you need to be in a walking boot; just not running will not heal it completely. Pain can be on the inner and outer shin, and slightly behind the leg. Shin splints are basically severe stress on your tibia (the shin bone). So you can feel pain anywhere in that area. The tibialis muscles need to be stretched. Keep up with the stretching, but I would get an x-ray to rule out a fracture. Good luck!
dr. ...... These just saved my life! I'm in the marines and I've got a pft in a couple months. These helped me greatly. Just did three miles, virtually no pain .. THANKS!!
Been doing these exercises to help me with my Achilles tendon surgery recovery. It helped me immensely! Finally I dont have or feel tightness like I used to. Thank you Dr. Jo for sharing it and showing it.👍👍👍
Did you ever figure this out? Sounds like you may have had stress fractures. Been there done that. Takes a while to heal and there is absolutely no more high impact exercises during the test period. Cheers!
lil_ kai same try using something hard like a metal pipe and just roll it against the shin that hurts. It pretty much just kills the nerves on the bone but hey at least you don’t feel anymore pain at the end
I have the feeling to the left of my shin bone right in the center of the muscle that feels like a deep pain like someone is squeezing my leg in a vise. If I lift my foot and apply pressure in the center it hurts pretty bad. The deep pain comes and goes but it wakes me up at night.
Thank you so much for this video! I've been researching up the wazoo on how to keep up my fitness routines with the same intensity and amount while suffering with shin splints. Darn flat feet :( Every time I work out I'm going to add this to my stretching routine to hopefully avoid them or at least to not make things worse. High Knee leg taps, scissor Jacks and any kind of jack or jog has been an absolute NIGHTMARE. THANKS AGAIN! :)
I’m a soccer player and struggled with shin splint after some games. After I followed your exercise instructions I really felt better and trained well. Thank you so much @askdrJo
Thanks Doc! I've got back into running this month after 14 years from any running. couldn't figure out my shin stretches. this almost immediately relieved a chunk of soreness. thanks again!
Thank you for the video. Ive got flat feet & have been suffering from shin splints for a long time. I tried dry needling but that made things worse. Will definitely try these stretches. Thank you again Dr. Jo.
I love being a subscriber of such a long lived channel. You have a video for everything! Glad I also found the strengthening exercises for the shin for after I get the pain under control. You're great! Thanks for your work :)
Thank you so much for these stretches! Currently training for a half marathon in 51 days, but my inevitable shin splits came up recently. These stretches helped a ton!!! I cannot thank you enough!!
Great videos Dr. Jo! Thanks for sharing them. I've done the stretches and i can feel the stress on my legs getting released. Afterwards it feels like walking on clouds!
I had really bad shin splints, to the point where I could barely walk. I went to an orthopedic doctor... he is the first doctor I have ever had, to check to see if I had deficiencies prior to medicating me. The lab work showed that I was vitamin D deficient. He prescribed a high dose of Vitamin D and had me see a physical therapist. That was a couple of years ago and I cannot remember the stretches. Thank you so much for the video. It was very helpful. God please bless everyone here!🤗
OMG thank you ive been suffering from these for about 3 months know from football i had know idea what it was. but ill try this out tommaro before practice because it affects my speed and ablility to stop and cut with out it hurting thanks. youre a life saver
Have you ever had x-rays to rule out a stress fracture? Unfortunately, shin splints can reoccur often. If a stress fracture has been ruled out, then you just have to be very consistent with your stretches and exercises. Also, taking a look at your body mechanics with activity might help. Then shin splints come from high impact repetitive movements. So see how your are running, jumping, landing, and see if you can make some changes! Good luck!!
These stretches work for the posterior tibialis (shin splints) pain as well. Keeping the whole lower leg stretched and lose should help with the pain. Good luck!!
Ive had shinsplints for the last 6 months. Im a distance runner never had a chance to rest because of training and meets every week. What should i do? The pain is not going away i've gotten X-rays my doctor said nothings wrong.
Raul Mendez You need to seriously take a 4 week break. To let it heal. it might come back but it will be easier to deal with. This is what has helped me.
When my shin splints get really bad, my muscle tends to tear away pretty far and water builds up underneath. I have to take a 1-2 month break from running or it won't heal properly.
Just watching this made me feel better, psychological level, subconsciously I see relief in sight which in itself is highly helpful. Any tips for wrist support with these stretches?
The only true way to tell is to get x-rays, but if you try the stretches and feel relief, even if temporary, it is probably just shin splints. If you have persistent pain, you should really go get x-rays, or go to a PT. PTs can do ultrasound which can sometimes help diagnose a fracture. Good luck!!
AskDoctorJo I have shin splints but the pain keeps increasing everytime I run it was at my shins first and now it's almost to my hips will these workouts still help?
Oh God, this is so helpful. I almost teared up with relief. I am a doctor and it’s absolutely impossible for me to slow down or clock out or take some time off. Thanks a lot!
After running a bit more yesterday outside I woke up with horrible shin splints. Happy being almost 40! This video was AMAZING. The first stretch did the trick!!!
Great clear video, thanks. I've just done the exercises and I'm amazed to find my shin splits are already improved! (I realise I'll need to do the exercises more). One question though; for those of us who are, shall we say, exercise ball shaped it can be difficult to support the weight of our upper body on our arms. Are there versions of these exercises where that's not necessary?
You should definitely go to the doctor for at least some x-rays. Sometimes stress fractures can feel like shin splints. It's at least worth going to rule out any stress fractures. Good luck!! I hope you feel better soon!!
I have it mostly on the inside of my right leg but can feel it on my left aswell....but a lot worse on the right i think its because i do boxing I'm orthodox....which means Left foot forwards and right back and I'm always on my toes on the foot i have back, i think thats whats causing it to hurt more in the right shin. Help!! Should i just use these stretches....you said these stretches stretch the outside when mine hurts on the inside a lot more!
Bradley Phillips Bro, this just started happening to me. Boxer as well and have never had s problem until recently. Please let me know if you have found something that works!
Bradley Phillips same here mate I used to train 11 hours a week and the boxing exercises really messed up my shins. I' still get the pain if I run a lot
Thank you so much i'll try them tomorrow before my workout, that area has been killing me and i can't seem to do a proper rope double unders because of it !
Do the same stretches apply for the interior? AAAnd there is nothing more sexy than an educated independent woman, in my opinion. Gorgeous on top of that? Thanks for the tips as well.
I use to play football and I started experiencing this shin splint pain since 2017. It always disturb me during my walking, running and the course of the game. So many times i just walk out of the field after a few minutes of play feeling very bad and emotional in tears. I have been struggling to find ways to get rid of it until now i manage to find and watch this video. Hope this will help me out. Cheers
The stretches are to help the healing, but you should really see a doctor first. Sometimes you can have a stress fracture that feels like shin splints, so it is important to get that ruled out. If there is no fracture, then yes you can do the stretches now to help the healing. Good luck!!
