When I arrived in Cape Verde after a hectic passage from Lanzarote, I was feeling so emotionally drained and fatigued that I wasn't sure if I would continue my journey across the Atlantic solo, or in fact, at all.
I had Sophie help me put together several options to either stop in Cape Verde and have the boat delivered by Professional Yacht deliveries, or have a couple friends fly down and join me on my leg to the Caribbean.
But after spending some incredible times around the island, I felt like a new man and realized that my initial motivation for undertaking this passage hadn't changed and that I would be hugely disappointed if I did not finish what I had started.
And so here I am today, about to finish what I started, and while I hope this time passage will be smoother, I am confident in my ability to meet whatever challenge I am faced with...

I've never seen croquettes butchered in such a way, but hell, if that wasn't just genius ..... your face when you held up the ice cream tub was pure joy. You're so right about the "down the mountain" risks, it's human nature to relax when we perceive the difficult part of any venture to be over, and its because we naturally switch off that's when we make mistakes. It's like athletes celebrating prematurely before crossing the finish line... one has simply to keep being switched on right to the end. Fair winds to you both.

What a great video. Guys the way you support one another, from even half way across the ocean is a beautiful thing. To you guys it probably just feels normal, like no big deal. From someone who recently lost a loved one, it is beautiful, commendable, and inspiring. I wish you all the best.

Your comment about complacency was very timely for me. I’m going flying tomorrow for the first time in 3 months. I have several thousand hours and complacency is something I have to watch out for all the time. Your comments reminded me to be extra vigilant about using my checklists.

That's awesome Roy :) I think that mitigating the risk of complacency starts with taking a good look at ourselves and being honest!
@royjageman2

The flight was great today. I thought about you as I remembered to do my checklists. Got to do a simple instrument approach with about 1200’ broken. Sometime you should talk more about your aviation background. Maybe you’ve done that, but I missed it. What did you fly?
@royjageman2
@royjageman2 2 года назад
As you know, they teach you in aviation about some pilots that don’t like rules. I forget the term. After flying for many years it’s easy to take on those characteristics - going where you want, when you want. That’s when I have to avoid complacency. I often think flying is like sailing. You have to put aside your worldly concerns and totally focus on the task at hand. That makes it relaxing because it’s a form of escape.

Your breaking down the trip into 4 groups was a great move, and is a pretty common thing that we recommend for people doing any big trip. I like that (I think) you inadvertently followed the stages of group dynamics. Forming, Norming, Storming, and Performing. Well done!

Congratulations Ryan! You have already done more than most people would dare dream to do. More than the actual trip, overcoming your anxiety and continuing is the biggest victory. From someone who also is very familiar with anxiety, giving into it only reinforces and makes it worse. By confronting and overcoming it loosens it’s grip on you. Thank you for sharing your very honest story here.

Family doc who sees many refugee patients here. Thanks for helping in what way you could there with the migrant boats. From your past few videos, I think you’re trying to process your experience and maybe having to do that while you’re on a solo trip across the Atlantic has made that difficult. Consider speaking to a psychologist specializing in PTSD even if over sat phone to have someone professional to process the experience with. This can help avoid longer lasting effects from the experience. Especially if experiencing lingering anhedonia, depression, and sleep difficulty. Yes, your position in that situation was not as precarious as those in the rafts, but at the same time, you were not expecting an experience like that and had not prepared to encounter something like that. Good luck and fair winds!

A Healthy Medical EMERGENCY Bag, which should include Several Month's Of whatever Medical Prescription's Along with a Practicing Medical General Practicing Doctor Report + Certification + A Good Strong Antibiotic to Treat most of the Serious Medical Infection's which May Require Antibiotics Plus You Should Receive Vaccine's Against The Tropical Diseases which you Will Be Exposed in The Areas Which You intend Visiting Which You *Must Ensure Are In Date And Were Stored before being Administered at The Correct Temperature. This I Discovered the Hard Way BECAUSE I Did Get Vacinne But the Vacinne DID NOT WORK. Which resulted in a Hospitalization, in a Country where if the Hospital Failed THEN Your Body is Without Your Permission an immediate Body Parts Donation to Every Wealthy Drunk looking for a Clean Healthy Liver, A Good Heart, Two Kidney's, Two Eyes, Just about any Body Donation Part . As it turned out , i Paid Over Thirty Thousand Euro to get out of Hospital. Thanks to A Vacinne which was not able to work, either because i Did Not Ask to Check the Expiry Date +Or i Did Not Cross Examine The Doctor with regard to Storage Of Vacinne at The Correct Temperature. Generally, We Trust Doctor's in My Nation! With regards to Any Prescription Medicines You Require, it is Absolutely Necessary that you have A Qualified Practicing Medical Doctor's Prescription to be kept with Your Medicine's. Just a few minutes before Landing in the Country i was visiting, after a Very Long Flight Halfway Around The EARTH, i was handed a Landing Card by a Airline Stewardess, without explanation. Just a Routine thing the Stewardess did five minutes before the End of Every Halfway Around The EARTH Flight. So i started to fill out the Landing Card, when i Read for the First Time "Death" to People who bring Drugs into the Country i was now two minutes from Landing. See i have a Medical Prescription for Prescription Medicines which had been Prescribed for Injuries which i had received. My visit was to a Friend who it happens is a Medical Consultant in that country, but now i was one minute from landing. As i am a Lawyer, i was Astonished to be put in such a Position. Normally, i would Ensure I would Protect Myself AGAINST such unwelcome Threat's Of "Death". But, when the Aircraft Landed, i Declared the Prescription Medicines, And, i was assured by The State employees in the Airport Arrivals Customs Area, That it was ok, that i Declared the Medicines. All the Time My Friend was going back and forth in front of the Window of the Arrival Hall. One moment, before Crossing the Arrival Line , the somewhat invisible line in ALL INTERNATIONAL PORTS OF ENTRY , I was Prepared to Hop on the Same Aircraft Home, i was Astonished to Read the Threat to ALL Visitor's. Indeed, if i had i hopped on the same Flight Home, i would have Saved Myself from Tropical Illnesses, A Huge Hospital Expensive stay, Along with a Threat of becoming A Body Parts Donation Target, And, Threat Of Execution for Arriving into Their State with Prescribed Prescription Medicines which The State could Actually Execute Visitor's. Believe it or Not, i actually Helped That Nation Subsequently when it was Suffering at the Bad Action's Of its Neighbouring Countries. But, let me get back to the Life Saving Information with regard to Medical Prescribed Medicine, i cannot state strongly enough, if you are Prescribed by any Qualified Medical Practicing Doctor Any Medicines, Then Make Absolutely Certain That you bring Your Original Doctor's Medical Prescription with you And Keep Copies on And in your Various Safe Places. Multiple Copies! If you have any doubts, About Prescribed Medicines, Then request the Embassy of the Nation which you plan to visit, in Their Embassy in YOUR own Nation, to confirm that you are Lawfully Permitted to Enter Their NATION with the Medical Prescribed Drugs which you provide a copy of your Medical Practicing Doctor's Prescription to that Embassy for THAT Nation you are visiting. Otherwise, without following Legal Advice You + Your Body May be Arrested, Prosecuted, Executed, And, Your Body Parts May become Donations to people who would pay any amount of Money for a Healthy Heart, Lungs, Kidney's, Liver , Eyes , Limbs , even your Face can be MEDICALLY Transplanted. The List Of Human Body Donation's increases as MEDICAL Expertise is Gained! When, i Questioned the Hospital Consultant about Medical Practice in the nation, where i was Hospitalized, and , i was told if i underwent any procedure and if i died during a Medical procedure, That the Hospital Automatically would without My Written Authority would take My Body as a Body they could take any organs, any limbs, any part of my body, WITHOUT MY AUTHORITY AND WITHOUT MY PERMISSION FROM ME! THAT WAS ASTONISHING a Hospital which had no reason to succeed, would be in Danger of Profiting from selling Healthy Parts. In My Nation, at least Hospital's cannot Automatically Take A Patient's Body for Body Part's. But, the Government have been looking to Adopt such A Bad Law, into Law in My Home Nation. Which is Odd, as the Number Of Volunteers to Donate their Bodies Parts are mostly Not utilized in My Nation. Instead, the Majority Of Lawfully Donated Body Parts are sent to The United Kingdom. Even though Hospitals in My Nation have Long Waiting Lists for Kidney Operation's, Heart Operation's, Lung Operation's, Liver Operation's, Eye Operation's, YOU GET THE POINT I AM MAKING!?!!! Odd, Very Odd. The above, i have stated, in Order to Save Human Lives. 1. Human Lives on The Ocean's or Sea's...But Remember Keep to The Prescribed Permitted Dose Of Medicines. Do NOT OVER DOSE! Too much Paracetamol can Kill You also, if you over dose! 2. SAVING HUMAN LIVES who do not Remember to Bring An Original Medical Practitioner Prescription stating That The Medicine's ARE PRESCRIBED MEDICALLY NECESSARY MEDICINE'S. 3. SAVING HUMAN LIVES Who have NOT DONATED THEIR LIVES to a nation they are visiting. Ryan, if you are reading the above, it really does not apply to you, specifically. But, you do need to Relax Tell Sophie your feelings. But, your feelings for Sophie should not be shared with The People on your show channel, unless you and Sophie agree. However, i Believe, it should be Private. Keep Sophie for yourself, she may Appreciate it. Now, this is where i will say goodbye for now to Ryan and Sophie. Be kind to each other. Sail together and build your family. After Reading the above , And , Before Writing it, i knew that the Medical Matter's matter, And, That Landing in A Country Half Way Around EARTH , Being Threatened with "DEATH" because i had not been pre=warned before joining my Flight from EUROPE, has ALERTED Me to Be Aware Of Real Danger's. That Night, i joined my Flight, i had just come another Flight from My Nation, And, i had been given The Fastest Airport Internal Electric Vehicle Ride Through Frankfurt Germany to Join My Flight to Half Way Around The EARTH. The Airport Electric Vehicle Driver was Like A Formula One Driver as she Floored The Electric Vehicle Accelerator...it was literally a Flying Visit. Life Changing! So Much has Changed as A DIRECT Result! But, the above input is intended to HELP PEOPLE! Which it Will Do, if PEOPLE Listen...They May Save Their Lives

Hey man congratulations on your accomplishment! Try not to worry and let your mind wonder. When it does go in that direction, shut it down. Stay positive. The boat is doing exactly what it is designed to do. You are doing fine. Even though you are in the middle of an ocean, imagine if you were a mile off shore with the same conditions. Would you be so concerned? Don’t let your mind play tricks on you and stop worrying. Worrying will not change anything so don’t do it, shut it down and enjoy the ride. Cheers!

Wanted to offer some comments. You are very in-tune with the boat and the sea and I learn something every time you sail Ryan. I find that I am also affected by disruptions in a passage for some reason, perhaps more than others. We get a mindset for a long passage and when something disrupts that its very very difficult. Like the great Skipper that you are you recognized that you needed a little time on terra firma. Its the same for me, a few days of hiking on land and I kind of find my base again and resume my voyage. Good luck! We miss Sophie too! Epic episode.

Try the idohoan Potatoes in a bag, they come in different flavors! Boil 2 cups of water, stir in the powder and Voilà! Super easy and DELICIOUS!just remember to stir as you pour the powder, you will thank me later. OUTSTANDING TASTE and very easy. Great video. Fair winds and tight lines. Soloing isn’t easy but the reward is a lifetime ACHIEVEMENT. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Ryan, you are SO effing brave! And further more, that white line on your right side, that is awesome! I have one too, it's in the center of my forehead. A white streak is a good thing, IMHO. And you did concer your fears, I am SO impressed of your resolute to do this when you have so much fear and anxitity about it. You go boy! mvh/Catta

Well done. One word of caution when working in that steering locker. I met a guy who was working on his boat in the yard in a locker in the evening when it blew shut and locked. He was in it for several hours as he managed to get his wife to come and rescue him, but it could have been much worse!

Excellent Video, Ryan you are doing just great but I hesitate to mention - Sophie stole the show! I've never heard of an expedition sailor stocking up on food for the voyage from Ikea - inspired choice by one of you.

In the Navy when leaving Cadiz to head home to Norfolk Va. if memory serves me right 3 out of 8 times there were swells coming out of the North. And being in the Navy we did maneuvering exercises crossing the Atlantic Ocean so after ten days taking swells out of the north It really get on the nerves even on a 600 foot ship. Those crossings were in the Winter
