Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is one of the greatest pieces of art I have ever laid my eyes on. From the animation to the stylistic expressions, visual tones, music, artistry, imagination, and storytelling on display, there has never been a movie like this ever created. It is truly a work of absolute art. I needed to rant about it.
Marvel has created one of the greatest things in human history.

Ever since I watched this film it has been in my mind constantly replaying scenes, the soundtrack just being on repeat on my pc, just going online looking up the ending credits and just continuously being at awe at how humans made this project. From the opening scenes introducing Gwen, the battle with Vulture, there was just so much going on and I got so emotionally even before we got the title card. How Sony and Marvel let people tell and show their love to Spider-man and more importantly the concept of what it means to be Spider-man. I watched a lot of videos on Across the Spider-Verse and no video has been able to convey my emotions like this video. It feels like you went inside my brain and extracted all of my thoughts on this piece of art. This video truly is an amazing love letter and I'm so happy I got recommended this video. The acting in this movie is so good, and makes all of these animated characters not even seem animated. Every single scene Miles had talking to his mom from the mid portion to the very end of the movie felt so real and authentic. Animators and VA's killed it. @@flamingmohmohawesome4953 they don't use mocap in feature animation, mocap looks terribly bad when applied to stylized characters. I'm generally enjoying how the movie seems to be challenging the idea of "Spiderman needs to be a tragic martyr"; given most of those who make that claim often miss key point. Spideys life has tragic moments, yes. They suffer losses, but bluntly so does everyone. Its not those losses in of themselves that make most Spidey's lives tragic, but rather their traditionally terrible ability to process those losses instead. As you said, they "endure", they "cope" ... they don't "process". And whenever they allow that trauma too much control over their choices, it often is what leads them to such misery & tragedy. Especially with the destruction of their personal lives. With even the first movie showing this in how Peter B allowed his fear of losing kids to prevent him from ever having one; destroying his marriage. While Gwen's "not doing friends", closing herself off for fear of new pain after her Peter passed. With Miles' influence especially on them allowing them to change and improve those lonely martyr fates. Frankly, Miguel seems to be another variant of this. Forget holding the Multiverse together, the guy seems to barely holding himself together. With Fatalism and Responsibility being the crutches he seems to be using to just keep himself "enduring" after SO much loss, grief, guilt & tragedy. With his Spider Society kinda reflecting that mindset. This is a Miguel who was already is such a shit state that he tried to pull a ITSV Kingpin. And now we're dealing with that Miguel post the apparent horrific consequences of that. You don't turn a 15 year old kid into a projection target and scapegoat if you're doing "allright", and this Miguel seems like so close to a breaking point of his endurance its truly sad. Which is why he so desperately needs all his suffering and sacrifice to "mean something"; and "be a requirement for Spiderman". With everyone in that intervention room echoing that. With all of them accrediting just the worst parts of their lives for all the Good they've done.

@@Gamfluenthat's kind of the point of the movie: both sides of the argument have weight. Miguel and the other Spiders are right in that being Spider-Man is a sacrifice, often cripplingly so. Miles isn't a victim of circumstance anymore, he stepped into the role of Spider-Man willingly whenever he gets out of bed and puts on the mask. And that with that choice, comes consequences- the good, the bad and the very bad. But Miles also has a point- Spider-Man has a responsibility to try. To not be crippled by their fear of things going wrong if they make a mistake preventing them from doing what is right. It's through him that the writers are asking "Does Spider-Man HAVE to be defined by his tragedies?" "Does Spider-Man have to suffer to be a good person?" Miles says no, Miguel and the others say yes. And that's what makes the film so good. It's divisive because you can argue for both points with equal measure cause both sides have valid arguments as to why they exist.

I'm surprised I haven't seen much people talk about Spider-Byte's relationship with Miles. It's established through quick scene that Spider-Byte is using the Spider Society stuff as an escape from the toxicicity in her household. You can hear her parents arguing in the background, and she even says "here is better". Just from that alone, we know she's there to run away from her problems, similar to Gwen in that regard. But then we have Miles, a Spider-Man that's so desperate to get home and to save his family. That must have cut rather deep for Spider-Byte. And Gwen realizes this too when she tells Miles' parents just how much Miles loves them. Man the subtle yet efficient characterization for the characters in this movie is so freaking amazing I love it

"Miles Morales is a mistake", "Miles shouldn't exist", "Miles Morales is a fake Spider-man" etc. These are all phrases levied against Miles since his inception, and they sat and brilliant chose to embed this meta into Miles Morales' origin story, into his growth and development. That anyone can wear the mask. That he belongs. That Miles Morales IS Spider-man, and nobody can take that away from him.

@@SpacemanSR Something to keep in mind, though, is such comments were being made during a period where a lot of superheroes were more or less being replaced by more "diverse" variants. Characters like Iron Heart and Jane Foster replacing Thor come to mind immediately. Ways to pander to a new demographic based on ethnicity or sex rather than character. Miles was sprinkled in among these, and a lot of fans saw it as another "diversity" change. "Let's make Spider-Man black for no other reason to have a black Spider-Man." That doesn't make a good story OR character. However, the writing behind the character was good enough that most people who initially doubted the quality behind Miles can now agree that he's a good character, and stands out enough from Peter Parker while also respecting the classic Spider-Man. A good counterpoint is Riri Williams. Her debut comic painted her as a psychopath, and the quality of writing for her stories and character haven't endeared her to anyone as a suitable replacement to Iron Man. She's a token, and nothing more. Miles' stories and writing managed to pull him above that.

well it's kinda hard not to think that when Peter always gets screwed up and everything always goes well with Miles, besides the fact that they also give him Spider-Gwen which at least in the comics (and I don't care if it's a variant of the way it was) could put with Peter, it's hard not to give against a character if since they created it they've been doing everything to bury the original one and put him as the main one, even when there was a doubt that Ben Reilly was the real Spider-Man Peter made a fool of himself that he is doing now, even a blind man sees it that they are ruining Peter on purpose to pass the place to Miles, if Miles had made his way like Kaine did maybe I accepted it better but the way they handled things no

@@yesouioo Yeah that’s pretty much it. Most characters we see, especially in their youth, have to learn to accept themselves and grow in spite of their poor upbringing or disadvantages and it’s easy for audiences to get behind a character that deals with that. However, there’s a good number of people who’ve actually grown up in a positive environment with loving families that support them. Miles comes from that kind of upbringing and it’s refreshing to see. Not all people come from extreme disadvantage and that’s ok. It’s kind of what the whole spider society concept is about: Spider-Man doesn’t have to be born out of tragedy.

It really brings to light the possibility that Miguel is wrong here. But also, it brings the multiverse to a point where it’s more palpable than what the MCU has done so far. It takes what Loki’s done and makes it the hero’s personal journey while facing literally everything he’s ever known and loved. You brought perspectives I didn’t quite see before. Usually when I watch a good movie, I’ll obsess for a couple of days and then eventually move on. However, almost 2 weeks after seeing it, I’m still in love and cannot let go of this obsession, this feeling of excitement for a sequel is something no other film has ever made me feel before. This movie is beyond exceptional, and is the perfect representation of what a movie can be. This movie gives the perfect example of how to make lovable characters, like Hobie Brown, Spider-Punk, for example. Out of every character in this film, I had this assumption he’d be the least important in the film, and that he’d be this punk “poser” of sorts rather than a really cool dude. But instead, he is probably the most important Spider-Man to Miles’ character growth and to the plot of this entire movie. I mean, he knew Miles for less time than Gwen Stacy and even Peter B. Parker, and he still did SO much more for Miles than either of them combined. He looked out for him throughout the entire film, he tried convincing him against joining the Spider Society to protect him, and he helped him escape the cage they placed him in towards the end of the film. He is the reason a sequel is even possible, since he stole parts from Miguel and then crafted a makeshift watch for Gwen in the assumption that things would go wrong. And don’t even get me started on Indian Spider-Man (I don’t know how to spell his actual name). The trailer made him seem like he’d be this annoyingly arrogant Spider-Man character, but the movie made him an absolutely amazing character with some of the funniest lines in the movie (such as his frustration about people saying Chai Tea). Characters aside, this movie also has beautiful foreshadowing. In one of the Spot’s backstory scenes, we can briefly see the spider of earth-42 preparing to bite Miles G. Morales (Miles of earth-42) before it got sucked up into the portal that resulted in our Miles Morales being bit in the first film. The way this movie connects to the first film in so many brilliantly written ways is just mind blowing. I mean when the first film released who would’ve guessed (or even theorized) that the guy Miles threw a bagel at while escaping from the Alchemex laboratory would turn out to be the multiversal threat known as the Spot four-and-a-half years later. Personally, I thought it was thrown in with the onomatopoeia “bagel” effect as a funny joke when I first watched the first film, not as an incredibly subtle but genius method of foreshadowing, and I’m certain that I’m not the only one who thought this back then. All of these and many other reasons that would take me ages to type out in detail here are what make this film (and could make any film) amazing. This masterpiece of a film has me in a powerful chokehold, and I, for one, don’t want it to let go.

Can I be honest? Completely and fully? I didn’t expect this movie to compete with the first one. Sure, I knew it would be GOOD, but not… I didn’t think it would top it. And then I got there, and I watched it, and I didn’t even consciously realize how long it had gone on before the ending happened. It suspended me in disbelief so thoroughly that I genuinely couldn’t believe it was over. I belly laughed at some of the jokes, teared up in some of the scenes, and walked away with an incredible sense of awe. Absolutely incredible. Cannot WAIT for the next one!

I finally got around to watch it and I rewatched it 3 times in like a week, I just cannot get the scenes and music out of my head, almost feels like an obsession. I want to get into art and I'm at the beginning still but seeing the scenes in this movie was just jaw dropping, you could've paused this movie so many times just to get another insane shot that you would probably get 100k likes on twitter for if you were able to draw something like that. I can't pinpoint it completely, but one of the scenes I keep thinking about is the rainy New York towards the end and how amazing that red and poison like green coming from the city looked, I could probably talk about this movie all day long and would not get bored

These movies spoil so many other movies due to how incredible they are. A new renaissance of big budget animation started with the first, I wonder how it changes not only animation, but every form of art ever. Yes. You've articulated this so well. When the lights came up in the theatre I was just so shook as one is after seeing of of the best films they've every seen. My kids and husband liked it, but like "it was good" liked it, so I thought maybe I was being a bit too extra. This is the perfect film, and as you mentioned, it enhances the previous one, which I immediately watched when I got home. I enjoy the rest of the MCU (and DC) for what they are, but these movies are on an entirely different level.

I was so afraid that this movie could not stand up to the brilliance that the first movie displayed. By all accounts the process to create this movie was messy and chaotic and ended in a frantic sprint to it's release date. So far I've only seen it once on it's release weekend. 20 minutes into the movie, I turned to my wife and whispered that this movie was a masterpiece. And that was only my impression of it's way of using artistry in the background. It was challenging to keep up with the details in the best possible way. It's beats and pacing and flow pulled you in and kept the audience involved, even when it was moving so fast everyone should get lost. I only look forward to a second, third, fifth viewing to absorb more of the details and callbacks and easter eggs. The term cinema has been debated and abused lately, but this is Cinema. This is pushing the art of not only animation, but movies in general. My only hope at this point is that the third movie can stick the landing like Gwen Stacy in ballet shoes.

I’m wondering if they have enough time to complete this trilogy by March next year. I heard that they completed the film just a couple or so weeks ahead of premiere. If they need to push it to later next year, I won’t complain. I just want them to be able to tell the story they want to tell and how they want to tell it. For me Suzume and Across the Spider-Verse would be solid entries for animated feature at next year’s Academy Awards, maybe more for Across 🤞.

So, I started interning at an Animation Studio recently (super excited). And out of all the people I've met, directors, writers, TD's, animators, media engineers. It doesn't matter if there was something about the Spider-Verse they didn't like or if they were sold-out fans, the consensus was clear; Spider-Verse changed CG animation in the same vein that Toy Story did. While I don't think animated movies as a whole are going to start looking more like Spider-Verse, I do think Sony Animations attitude of big swings and creative leaps of faith at new ideas has absolutely perforated across the entire industry, and there's never been a more promising time to be in animation since John Lasseter and Brad Bird paved the way with Pixar in the 2000's.

Unrelated topic but I just realized that both of Spider-Verse’s final fights took place on top of a train. In the first movie the train was chaotically flying all over the place, in the second the futuristic train flies up to it’s destination. Maybe in the third movie Miles and The Spot (or someone else) will fight on top of a train that will stop and go constantly like order vs chaos?

The nerdy guy that quips, fights, loses, and gets back up...like you, I love this vision...and to think...this is STILL his origin story... This is already the best spider ANYTHING I've ever experienced as well and we have not yet added a Venom, a true conflict with any of his main villains...a love triangle with....i dunno (a black cat version of Mary Jane!?!?! Imagine).....It really is nuts how they got this so right...but when people truly love something it shows.

You explained my thoughts perfectly. I've seen it 3 times in theaters now, definitely going to see it for a fourth time. I love everything that is and went into this film, it's impact is that on a level comparable to that of Toy Story and how it changed animation and maybe it's even beyond that. It's simply stunning and is one of the greatest pieces of art I've consumed and challenges/raises the floor of storytelling in theaters. Miles is fighting on all fronts to prove that he is spider man and I love how you said it he's fighting himself, the other spider-people, his own parents, and his very existence. Everyone keeps telling him no but he refuses to put down the mask. THAT IS SPIDER-MAN. Thank you to everyone that made this work of art, I cannot wait for the finale to this trilogy.

For me Spot is actually the best villain like... ever? He got those powers and as I heard he tried to be a hero but he failed, so he tried being a villain, Miles nemesis. Just think about how good of a hero he would've been and I believe Miles knows that, just as he accepted himself and decides to do his own thing, Spot could have been so much more if he just didn't gave up, all because what other people said and who knows, maybe that's gonna be the climax of the second part
