i cannot understand how more people don’t know about you!!! i just bought my first oils a few days ago (they’re not fancy but i’m learning) and your videos have helped me SO MUCH!!
Great vid bro. I've use acrylic for blocking in first then oil on top, works well. I have admit,I'm using acrylic lot more lately instead of oil. Gesso is great on other material. I've done wood painting and works well. Been using paint tape as a border . Feels like opening a gift when peeling it off at the end lol.
Paint adhesion is a lot more complex than just opinion of some believes; physical bond, chemical bond, flexibility and chemical compatibility are all important factors. Sheers is a totally different subject. Paint companies spent a great deal of efforts in research to ensure adhesion which including environmental exposure. However, an art painting may contains paints from different chemicals or diluted. Dry brushing is another problem. To say either primer or gesso is better over the other is over simplify a complex issue.
You are correct, Paint adhesion is complex, so is rocket science and brain surgery. However, you need to start simple to get people interested in a topic. If their curiosity is sparked, they can start their own rabbit hole of research to learn more about the subject matter.
Glad to help out - If you need a little more info on gesso and I think I recommend some affordable ones... Check out the video below: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YANlwXGIiwI.html
I know this is an older video, but I will offer a hint. If you must use acrylic paint to prep your canvas, get a little plaster of paris and mix in with it, in a pinch, cornstarch will work also. It will lower the gloss and increase the tooth.
I mix up acrylic with mod podge mat to gesso some art pieces. This allows me to use any color I like to seal the canvas and remove the canvas marks. For my personal work, I am not a fan of the canvas weave in my work...crazy right? 😜 If I don't have mod podge, glue works in a pinch! Just dilute it a bit...
@@WildCreates Oh gosh, I totally agree and have been utilizing acrylic mediums to create layers of abstract textures and 'spaces' within my explorations. I recently purchased some impasto medium and today's project will be coloring it with acrylic inks after gessoing the canvas with flat mod podge, it's going to be fun! Thanks for the video!
@@WildCreates I use marble powder! I mix it with an acrylic medium, and utilize acrylic inks, they blend completely, an alcohol ink won’t work as well. 🤗
Exciting or not, this was a Great video, and great topic. Thanks for the demo! I bought both, a HUGE jug of acrylic black, and black/white gesso. Havent tried the acrylic yet but good to know it will SORTA work lol. Btw, I'm guessing your dad had a full head of good hair at 60 years old. Mine still does at 71, thankGod! Silver, but still there lol
I just dy my white gesso whit my black basics acrylic paint from liquitex. Saving a few euro,s. I live in the netherlands. I love you,re video 👋🏾👍🏾👏🏾🖐🏾 i use monte marte white gesso. Mostely i buy 2 jaren. One i can leave white and on for black or Grey paint
Hello Wild Creates. I found that liquitex has gesso in a bottle and it is is 964 ml. I am gonna buy the liquitex gesso instead of the monte marte gesso cause it will last me longer
You are super welcome Gesso is used 9 times outta 10 for prepping a canvas. If you want to protect your painting then I would recommend spray varnish as a new painter. You can learn more about it in this video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I9C7HO7IkRk.html&t
So im new with acrylic paint and i just got all of the things i need. So i can use white acrylic paint on the canvas to prepare it, and use more paint to paint the thing i wanted to paint?-
Hello Wild Creates. How are you doing? Iam done whit big canvasses in my room. I paint now on canvas panels or canvas boards they are called. Its smaller, cheaper and i can store more canvas panels and its eazier than storing large canvasses in my bed room. 😊 i am buying liquitex gesso instead of my budget gesso it will last me longer. The bottle that i have now has 500 ml of white gesso and i am out of it whitin a week 😱The liquitex gesso is 946 ml. I order 2 bottles just incase. I like to dy my canvasses black or another colours too soo i think i need 2 bottles of liquitex gesso😁It will last me for a month or 3.Thanks for this video Wild Creates
Hello Wild Creates how are you? I,ve dicided to paint whit winsor and Newton galaria acrylic paints. I pay for 1 tube of liquitex basics acrylic 22,49😱😭 and i pay 13,80 for a jar of 500 ml of galaria acrylic paints from winsor and Newton😁 i paint now only whit winsor and Newton galaria acrylic paints. So its a big win for me to make the brand switch. 👋🏾👍🏾😁
I varnished a painting that was primed with balck acrylic had dried completely for close to a year. The gamvar varnish removed some of the oil paint and ruined the painting. I think there is a better adhesion with the gesso like you mentioned. Just a heads up for those that go to varnish a black canvas that was primed with acrylic. I don't want anyone to ruin a painting like I did.
In my opinion the Black Acrylic Primer wasn't the issue. A lot of people forget that oil can take a super long time to truly be dry. Some of my past painting have taken more than 16 months to fully dry before I could varnish them.
Wild Creates it was definitely an adhesion issue. This painting was fully cured. Just a heads up for people. People can take the comment with a grain of salt and do whatever they like. Just felt like i should mention it as it hasn’t happened with a properly gessoed painting IME. ✌️
Hi, I’m new to wet on wet style painting (or just painting in general), and I have found your channel very helpful, thank you for uploading all these videos! Question, what does the “acrylic medium” on that Liquitex bottle of black gesso mean? Can I still use it for oil painting?
All paints are mediums - Its the general term that covers all paints and fluids. ( Dont worry about it too much ) As for your bottle, its fine and YES you can use it :)
There are links in the video description that link to black gesso in your area. If there still isn't any.... Yes you can use a drop of black acrylic. Just make sure that it is matte and not glossy.
Mix gesso with a matte acrylic color to avoid your base coat from glossing which can make it hard for paint to stick to if you plain on painting on top of it.
So when Bob says "prestetched, DOUBLE PRIMED canvas" is he referring to using either one before he started painting? I noticed today while Watching him paint, his canvas didn't give as much when making mountains like mine does. His canvas seems a lot stiffer. Is this also something that gesso or acrylic does to the canvas?
Not all canvases are built the same. Some canvases have more toothing to them. Which grabs paint. I think I talk about it a little in this video below. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nSnAFaf1iE0.html Sometimes you just have to try a few different canvases til you find the ones you like.
That can work - as long as there are no additives in they paint. But I would really only recommend this for practice and fun pieces... not for archival art.
Hiya! Thank you so much for this, i am a complete beginner to oils! (I usually use watercolour and know nothing about prepping canvas) Quick question, how do you prep a canvas? How thick does it need to be? Do i need to let it dry before going ahead with oil paint? If anyone could help me out that would be amazing, thank you!
This vid is super informative, i cant buy gesso where i live, only online ordering but the shipping is so expensive! Thank you for taking time to film this!
I have a few video that you will give you all the info you need to get off on the right foot, They are a little old but still valuable: - Why Gesso: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l1RTfCFAqSw.html - Gesso For Beginners: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z1kdd-uHHj4.html - Liquid White Apply: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZpI0Rz6XpcU.html
hello I don't understand English well, so I ask you for explanations: to do relief work which plaster powder do you use? I have gypsum canary powder for the silicone molds, it can be fine! or would it be better a homemade material paste with vinyl glue, talc, and white acrylic? thank you
If you are taking about prepping your canvas by toning it - You can do either or.... If you use gesso it will have more texture for the paint to grab onto where normal acrylic may not. Hope that helps
I have not tried those - I am sure they could work if you let them dry enough. Just be careful - Those paints have mediums in them to breakdown paint to make it more fluid, could have an effect on your other paints.
Overall not much - I am sure there are differences like how its made, one may have more binder in it, How thick of thin one is, one might be better for sanding for smooth surfaces..ETC... I only have experience and knowledge in the way that I use it (which is mostly for landscapes and pours) - In that aspect there are close to similar.
You can - But you have to be careful.... Nowadays a lot of house paints and primers have additives (like odor-eaters, thickening agents, etc) in them that will affect oil paint. Make sure to look at the labels.
Generally yes BUT if you watch a few of my other tip videos... you will see that the coatings can be cheap, sparse or patchy. Depends on the brand so be sure to check.
I made my Gesso, when it dried, it was like touching a chalk board, your fingers would be white with dust like a chalk eraser , I made it like the directions said, question is, is this the way it is supposed to be
There are different versions of gesso, and I am not sure what recipe you used. If you are using it for painting, there should be no residue or dust coming off it - That would make for weak paint adhesion.
Well it kinda depends on what you are trying to do and what materials you will be using. You might also need a product called a "fixative spray" for the tracing Short answer is you can do both BUT I would trace after the gesso. With that said I would do a small test. This way you will have a better understanding for your style Hope that helps.
Hard to answer your question, because I am not sure what you mean in your terms of "more quality?" I linked an article on mediums and chalk, hopefully it helps you out: www.naturalpigments.com/artist-materials/oil-paint-mediums/
@@WildCreates oh .i said "more quantity" But it's ok u can answer my other question Is acrylic gel medium is the same as the regular acrylic medium but more concentrated? Because if so i can mix it with latix paint which is very cheap and add water and I'll get a great amount of good quality of gesso
Oh sorry i miss read it. Whenever you add something you are technically diluting or shifting the integrity of the paint or medium. So think about ratios when doing so, this way you can increase the quantity while maintaining the quality or increase it. For number 2, Yes you can do that and many painters do. If you use color, its called toning your canvas with an acrylic wash. An acrylic wash is made by thinning paint with a lot of water. Thinning reduces both the amount of acrylic and pigment in the mixture. When a wash dries you end up with widely dispersed pigment particles settled down into and on the painting surface, with a very small amount of acrylic binder Hope that helps
thanks for this informative video!! :) also i have a question, can i use the Permacoat latex semi-gloss white wall/house paint on the canvas? after that i will paint my oil paint there so will it work?? (because i ran out of the white acrylics and i dont have a gesso)
You would have to research the products you use BUT in general you can use any wall/house paint. Its just a version of acrylic paint. I use them for my pour paintings sometimes. BUT PLEASE, make sure you house paints don't have additives in them (like odor blockers and things like that) cause this will make them act differently.
Can we just start painting without using gesso or acrylic paint ?? because i don't have much paints here in my house or any gesso during lockdown 💙 pls help me out♡
Yes you can start painting with out those.... Just know that you canvas may soak up more paint and it might not flow as much. Which could require you to use more paint over all.
hmm does gesso smell bad to you? To me just smells like acrylic paint or maybe glue. I will have to take a look BUT if it is off putting to your nose you can always make your own. Or you can use an acrylic matte paint that is more to the liking of your nose.
Dumb Idea - you can add some water to the gesso to thin it down. This will lessen the smell.. Later on I will give my gessos a sniff and see which brand I own is less smelly for ya ha ha ha
Gesso isn't required BUT it will help you. So I would recommend it if you are just starting out. Take a look at my starter painting tutorials playlist. There are a ton of simple paintings in their that will build your confidence :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rJp5_BalJtM.html
There are different kinds of gesso for different uses BUT you want to start with one that has the consistency of a thinner acrylic paint - Hope that helps!
I have never tried but my gut says YES! However, if the laminate wood has a coating/varnish on it. I would recommend using some sand paper to rub it off then wipe clean. From here you can apply gesso for a stronger bond. I hope that helps buddy 💪
If you doing your cabinets as a Reno, you may wanna do some extra research on the correct materials. My videos are more for display art.... If that makes sense.
Soft Body Acrylic Paint by Artist's Loft®, 32oz. ($12.99) Liquitex® White Gesso, 32oz ($44.99) It's not just a few bucks, it's more than triple the price... I'll stick to acrylics
While your process is true. Even though your numbers are off, cause a bucket of Liquitex WG 64 oz is only $30 on amazon right now & AL White (in my store) is $10. Comparing these two brands isn't really even. I personally believe from my experience that Liquitex is a better quality compared to Artist Loft... BUT each serve their purpose. Go with what works best for your style and wallet.
Some is made internationally like Canada, England, ETC... but there are many american one too. Try your local Micheals store... I was just there and they still had good stock.
