Are you sure about the comment "The IR touch frame has to be the same size as the tv and the overlay" ? I spoke to a vendor of IR touch frames and they clearly said it is possible using an IR touch frame being bigger than the actual screen. This is useful for setups where only a part of the mirror actually will be "smart".
After making this video I did find out that you can use a larger IR touch with a smaller TV. However, you would need to calibrate the software to tell it where the screen is behind the mirror. This still would limit your size a bit to a 16:9 or 4:3 ratio. The mirror and overlay would need to be the same size, but the TV can be smaller. Glad you pointed this out!!
I should say... the IR Touch Overlay is an empty frame so it sits on top of the acrylic and it is empty so that is why you still touch the acrylic with it on top.
The Smart Mirror glass we have is now much more color neutral. We perfected the mirror coating so it does look slightly more transparent than the Acrylic Two Way with a clearer image. The 3mm Smart Mirror thickness will have the warmer tone though. I am looking forward to updating pictures on the website & making a new video on this!
Thank you!! Would love to see some pictures of your final project when you finish it :) & don't hesitate to give us a call or email if you have any further questions.
The majority of users are setting their displays to turn off when not in use or if there is no motion activated. It would be nice to see what the mirrors looked like without the display on behind it to compare the reflectivity of the mirrors with no light behind.
Cool video! I've been trying to figure out what glass to use for a long time. In the first shot in the video, what kind of glass are you using there? Looks perfect for what I need. Thanks!
Hi! Next time hang some blankets or towels on the walls to cut down on the acoustic echos, they're pretty bad. I think DIYPerks has a video on making some nice panels !
as a barber i need reflection and good for somewhat misty environment. I wanna use the mirror as a touch screen and camera for the clients with lights surrounding the frame. would lighting take away from the reflection?
Need to make a small prototype to show clients. I ordered a replacement computer screen monitor 11.6 in screen to insert in my smart mirror can I get a 12 x12 acrylic piece of glass?
I have the 11% transparent 2 way mirror I got 2ft x 1ft size for only 2usd equivalent here. But I am not satisfied with how less light it passes through. It also has a blue hue. But unfortunately other options like acrylic are insanely priced at 60usd+ for same size. Confused on what to choose.
My apologies, that's a fairly large size--the higher transparency glass and acrylic does cost a lot more (you would not believe how much we have to pay, and there's a lot of waste materials we have to discard)
I really like your mirror setup How can I get the exact setup and skin for mine? and if possible can u make a tutorial about the rainmetter software Thanks
i seen a photo booth mirror with the glass is in front of everything, the question is can i put the touch screen hardwear behind the mirror not in front like a trim
Hi. Really helpful video, but I have a couple of questions... You say to steer clear of acrylic for touch applications, but if you're using a touch overlay then wouldn't this sit on top of the acrylic meaning nobody could touch / scratch it? Did you mean to stay away from acrylic if using touch foil, or can acrylic still somehow be scratched / damaged if using with a touch overlay? Would the touch overlay have to sit directly on top of the acrylic or can you leave a gap?
I'd hit that glass. LOL. Im making a mirror booth and was thinking tinting the glass myself might be a better option. Where can I buy the tint film. Thanks fun videos.
Here's the link to the film! www.twowaymirrors.com/two-way-mirror-film/ For a photo booth, many people are using the Smart Glass for best quality: www.twowaymirrors.com/smart-mirror/
Hi. What is my best option to display videos, and notifications for a big smart mirror. I was thinking of acrylic but I need one that will look exactly like a normal mirror. Thanks!
@@dnhmfnsk13 The Glass Smart Mirror has a semi-transparent mirror coating (70% reflective, 30% transparent). It does have metal in the mirror coating. The best way to find a good touch foil is to search online and then contact the manufacturer to ask for their advice and get a confirmation on whether or not it will work. So far, www.displax.com has a Skin Fit product that they have suggested to work with our mirrors.
Hello, Thanks for the explanation, I've been looking for something like that for a long time. I wanted to know if I was using the acrylic. The quality of the display is less than the glass?
Glad you liked the video! The Acrylic is 30% transparent so that is great for a smart mirror project. The Glass Two Way is only 11% see through so you lose much more of the display quality through the mirror.
Two Way Mirrors : Thanks, but I want to use not only for a smart mirror but also for RU-vid, so my question is whether when I play in the smart mirror RU-vid will see the movie good quality or not. I saw videos of people who built a smart mirror and see this as good on RU-vid, but no one wrote what mirror he used.
Yeah! So if you want really great display quality I would go with the Dielectric Mirror because it's tint free and 70% transparent so you don't lose much quality at all. I added an image that compares the reflection and display quality to my blog post here: www.twowaymirrors.com/how-to-choose-your-smart-mirror/ so you can see the difference of all the mirror types we describe in the video.
Hi. You stated that acrylic wouldn't be a good option for bathrooms. Does the size of the bathroom matter? As an example, I am working with a bathroom that is 15 x 12 and the shower is enclosed. There are two mirrors 40 x 40 over the sinks, which one is about 7 feet away from the shower and the other is 9 feet away. Do you think with this much space, that the degrading would be the same as a smaller bathroom?
Great question! It would depend on the ventilation - when you take a shower does the mirror fog up on that side of the room? If so, it probably wouldn't last over time.
Great. Another question. Planning on sealing or enclosing the back of the mirror with a plastic shell to encase the raspberry pi and smart mirror. Would this help the degrading at all?
Yeah that would definitely help! If you install it so that the acrylic mirror coating is facing the display, this would be optimal for protecting it against degradation. That way when you go to clean the mirror it would not affect the coating either.
Two Way Mirrors Yeah. The issue is, at those prices, you could just buy an already made smart mirror. The whole point of going DIY is to save money. I know you guys have margins to meet, etc... but, I think that you should consider the purpose of the purchase in your pricing. Thanks for the video, though. It was very informative.
The 1/4" thickness is more color neutral as we have just engineered a slightly different mirror coating so that it matches more closely to a standard mirror. The 1/8" thickness does have more of a warm tone to it.
We are able to ship internationally & shipping is free for pieces that can fit in a box! Let me know what size you're interested in via krista@twowaymirrors.com and I can send over a quote for you :)
The Dielectric Mirror is the latest and greatest for Photo Booths. It has flawless display quality through the mirror and the reflection is very good - close match to a standard mirror.
Staying authentic is the greatest form of professionalism. People these days are starved for authenticity. This made the brand feel much more personable and created a stronger connection for me as a viewer. She wasn’t being crude or vulgar. Let it go Damon. :)
It depends on which product (glass type) and mirror size. For the smart mirror glass, the beveled edge is on option of the price calculator: www.twowaymirrors.com/smart-mirror/
It's a custom piece we made using electromagnetism (copper coil inside the board) and special chess pieces that have a hidden battery inside of them (powered by the magnetic field) and led inside of them
@@twowaymirrors Naw stay where your at. This is youtube the rules are different. I can tell your made for youtube. I'm trying to find this Medium myself. It's gotta be hard to make a video about glass while holding attention.
I've listened to this video three times and I'm still not clear on which mirror I need to use. I'm not sure from hearing you correctly or because it seems like you're not sure what you're talkin about and you have to think too hard to come up with the answer but I'll keep researching it thanks
Thank you for the feedback! It just depends on a ton of factors ... as well as budget. Here is a link to an article I wrote that goes into more detail on the mirror types (along with comparison pictures): www.twowaymirrors.com/diy-smart-mirror/
Aw snap! It definitely was more stress than anything on getting it perfect. I'm not used to being in front of the camera but I am learning a lot by doing these videos. Imagine a web designer/tech expert suddenly doing a video with very little public speaking experience. It was intense at first but definitely worth it!
