Build your own Digital Magic Mirror - with Hue, Spotify, Tesla, Fortnite, Calendar, Weather, and many more integrations!
This video is sponsored by PCBway. 👇 More info below 👇
This Magic Mirror project has simplified my life whilst remaining hidden behind an inconspicuously simple mirror. In the morning the integrated motion sensor automatically turns on the information display and instantly shows me my calendar, local weather, news, and charge level of the family car.
Made from low cost builders yard pine wood and super strong Perspex Acrylic sheet (from Trent Plastic here in the UK), the mirror is easy to build. The monitor was bought from Gumtree and can be as little or as large as you like. The full length integrated touch lights also ensures the mirror is great for checking your outfit in before heading out for the day / night.

I've always used multitouch foil for mirrors and coffee tables. Also used mini PCs instead of Raspberry Pi too. More responsive and more capable, but of course more expensive. This really is INCREDIBLY clean and professional. Beautiful project.

@@DIYMachines just making sure you have a dust free surface as when you remove the protective film from the perspex the static can cause dust and small particles to be pulled to the surface. There are specific tools available to remove the dust but unless you're using them frequently it might not be worth the expense. A clean microfiber cloth should suffice.

I really enjoyed this video. I have watched a number of Magic Mirror builds over the years but this one has made me think that now is the time to build one with your design (with the black cardboard). On another note I have a Perspex shaped 1m Christmas tree display that has 3 leds in the base to give a Christmas light effect. I would like to replace the base with a vertical rod wound with leds that give the effect of the Eiffel Tower new year flashing light’s display. Do you know if this is possible?
@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines 9 месяцев назад
Thanks - yes definitely black cardboard. 🙂 For your xmas tree / Eiffel Tower consider using 'Neopixels' (also known as WS2812) LEDs. They are controllable with either cheap controllers on amazon or a something like an Wemos D1 Mini running the free WLED software. Here are some links: learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neopixel-uberguide/the-magic-of-neopixels kno.wled.ge

Nice - of course it would be even cooler if the mirror was a touchscreen (I know that that is probably either super expensive and/or hard to accomplish!) and if it could do seamless change-over between two of them (so say you are listening to the news while brushing your teeth in the bathroom and leave to put on clothes in the bedroom and the bedroom mirror seamlessly plays the news there) :) I also don't like (note: I know, for someone who is not actually DIYing much, I sure "complain" a lot!) that you covered up so many cables (and the LEDs - can't easily replace them if they were to go bad, which does happen!) etc. (it will make upgrading/changing this thing way harder)...then again, visible cables never annoyed me! I frankly think people who always try to hide cables are strange!

@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines 9 месяцев назад
Thank you. No you didn't miss it - I didn't mention a cost as it can vary based on so many factors for this project. i.e. the Overall size of the project affects the amount of wood and mirror/acrylic surface needed along with the size of the monitor/screen acquired. The choice of Raspberry Pi or similar SBC also comes into play along with whether or not you include the optional LED side lights. A lot of the components I used for my build including the wood was recycled from old projects or we already had it kicking around the house. The acrylic sheet was about £88 at 8mm thickness (Trent Plastics kindly donated it to support my channel) I went for thick acrylic to minimise the potential for distortion. Thinner acrylic would be cheaper. (i.e. 4mm is £44).

Cool project. Just for clarification is the motion sensor actually turning on and off the monitor or is just making it black? Just wondering about power consumption if the monitor is on all the time.
@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines 9 месяцев назад
It sends a signal to the monitor over HDMI telling it to turn off (at least enter stand-by). It then sends another signal to turn on when motion is detected. It means there is a delay of a few seconds but it does save a lot of electricity considering how much time the mirror spends unobserved.

Gute idee. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

You might want to get a wood worker to deal with the lumber fabrication and a Manufacturing Engineer to work out the details of your component wiring and access. You should never ever have components and wiring inaccessible after the item is built. What you have is a good prototype for a "proof of concept", but it's not a wise build technique. You might want to mention how dust can become a big problem when applying the film behind the plastic as well as the type of cleaner that is allowed. Some/most films & clear panels are easily destroyed by alcohol or vinegar (a common ingredient of most cleaning products)
@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines 9 месяцев назад
You're perfectly correct that this is my working prototype and if anyone with speciality knowledge in Woodworking or Manufacturing have advice for future projects I would be grateful to hear it for sure, I'm always learning and this is what I enjoy about working on the channel. Definitely worth checking the compatibility of any cleaning products before using them.
@MakeitZUPER

@@DIYMachinesI have a lifetime or more of electro-mechanical engineering and prototype fabrication experience that could never be shared in some comments, lol. Basically, think ahead for part serviceability with easier access, never use tape of any sort beyond waterproof tape or some other more commercial grade brands. The other consumer grade tape products will fail in time. Research woodworking tools and techniques so you don't need to fabricate printed components. There are corner chisel devices to clean up the ends of your routed slots for example. Look through supply websites for products/tools like Rockler, McMaster-Carr, MSC, Grainger, etc. Many people have children, so make your items and their attachments more robust with safety in mind. You can show your prototypes but focus on your rev. 2 or 3 version to share. They will look more professional and be a more attractive final product design. That in itself can increase your viewership. Consider adding more platforms to automatically share your presentations like Rumble and other non-censoring platforms. Stay away from Tic-Toc and other agenda driven platforms for your own safety as well as your patrons. You're on your way to a creative production channel so stay positive and keep going. Definitely diversify platforms and avoid storing anything on the cloud. Companies fail or merge. Free access becomes a subscription, and their servers are often targeted. develop your own Home Lab, VLAN, firewall and servers for security and storage of your presentations. The economy is heating up and the internet is about to see some large changes in a global way, so get prepared with backup systems or at least a plan now. Good Luck.

You're welcome. I detailed the software steps on my website here: www.diymachines.co.uk/how-to-build-a-smart-magic-mirror In previous project videos where I included the software steps baked into the video itself I have found after a year or two that sometimes it became incorrect as software continues to evolve. By separating the software steps onto my website I have the ability to revise it and keep it up-to-date for years after the video is set in stone. It also makes it easier to copy and paste commands. I hope you understand. Thanks for taking the time to watch the project.
