The fucking amount of Dead Space reviews that are coming out of nowhere. I swear everyone just noticed how a lot of new games have had terrible quality so they go back to the old days
I agree with you. About a year ago I felt the same about the peter jacksons king kong game. At the time i got back into it youtubers were pumping out videos discussing it.
This is a good things...games today are just sucking so badly or are jsut forgettable. Not all mind u there are diamonds in the rough. We've set our standards so low for good graphics we've forgotten what makes games great to begin with. I jus hope they could go al the way back in time during the X-BOX, ps1, Nintendo and Super Nintendo era.
@@medalgear654 Yeah I enjoy visiting old games that I didn't get to play because I was too young or even games that are released before my birth. I recently finished God Hand and now I'm playing Okami. Really unique games.
@@inferior3199 They are thats the thing about old game they do feel unique and less cinematic than the games today which are constantly becoming less and less indistinguishable from movies as if they are Hideo Kojima. I'm currently playing Tomb Raider after playing resident evil 2 and 3. These games are a masterpieces so much better than the reboots and remakes we just got.
It holds up really well. For how old it is, it still looks surprisingly good due to the amazing lighting. Combined with the no-hud style and in-game menu, really brings on the immersion. Easy to get into/focused on the game and not notice the older textures/animations. Truly a masterpiece from a graphical/performance level.
There was a time when I had like 4 years.. when in every January or February I played one of these 3 DS games. (2 times DS2 in 2 years and a 2nd time after my first ever playtrough for DS1 and DS3. I played these 3 games like at least twice.. 2nd time all on hard). DS2 is my favorite and I will probably revisit it again.
Erisen same here man. I still play em every few years and always enjoy it. DS2 was great, improved on literally everything. Although I hold a special place in my heart for the original. Played through it with my dad as a kid, and I will always have fond memories of getting my ass scared off with my dad.
@@civilizedsquid2455 Yeah I saw the dev notes, it still fascinates me however that two games after RE4 and Capcom didn't brought any tension. While Visceral games did what most tps game did, and made one of the most atmospheric and downright scary survival horror games to ever exist.
@@Silentguy_78 I respectfully disagree, look, I won't deny that RE4 on its own is perfection. But across the entire campaign I've been shooting and knifing all the same enemies that has all the same weaknesses throughout. I suppose Dead Space could be the same, but at least I have to think when and where to shoot.
I think Isaac is so calm in the opening cutscene of the game is because we probably weren't supposed to see his face. I always thought that it was weird that camera actually allowed you to rotate camera in that section, so probably it's an oversight
Honestly, i may be a the exception, but i don't think Isaac should be a silent protagonist in the first game... Somehow it always look awkward during conversations... Silent protagonists work in some rpgs like fallout, or when theres a reason to like for Doom slayer wich is as alien as the demons he fight. Dead Space is a very linear game, with a straight storyline, Isaac isn't a demon slayer, he is just an engineer.
@@efxnews4776 It struck me as weird since silent protagonists help to self-insert but they gave Isaac motivations wholly seperate from the player. Nicole's death scene is sad for Isaac but not for the player since you don't know her.
EA normally waits a bit before ruining devs they own. They buy them and then wait about 1 or 2 games before sucking the life out of them. EA then forces them to make a crap game that's nothing like their past great games. Blames the devs for its failure and then shuts them down. EA and Activision are terrible.
You know there were three Dead Space games before Dead space 3. Dead Space 1, Dead Space Mobile and Dead Space 2. The mobile game is actually very good and serves as a prequel to 2
On my yearly halloween playthrough of Dead Space I found that the music being turned off completely hugely improved the atmosphere for me, the only sounds in the game were of Isaac, the ship, and the necromorphs. Genuinely felt like I was alone on a ship full of horrible monsters.
@@princekanbatsu2301 I think you are talking about the intercom voices. Sometimes it sounds like hallucination voices, but I don’t think it’s that. Correct me if I am wrong though.
RU-vidrs have been doinga lot to keep this game alive. Mandaloregaming covered all 3 a year or so ago. Avalanche Reviews covered everything Dead Space. It's EA that murdered the franchise. Not gamers.
@@Gruntvc don't forget Roanokegaming. He's been doing videos on the necromorph infestations. Also most of the OG RU-vidrs have at least played a run of the first game too
Ah, one of my personal favorite games on the 360, along with its masterpiece of a sequel and a pretty lukewarm (but still fun with a friend) third entry.
@@Gruntvc me and buddy played through the coop story and returned it we both thought it was terrible after playing the 1&2 games. I've noticed thread in the 360/PS3 era if it had a 3rd entry it was almost always downgrade from the first 2 games
I had heard a lot of amazing things about Dead Space prior to playing it so I had high expectations but it still managed to exceed them all. It really is a legendary survival horror game.
sadly Visceral Games was shut down, so I don't think that will happen any time soon. :( would LOVE to see a MELE type remaster of DS trilogy, and with some major tweaks to the terrible microtransactions in the third game (meaning they go away and are replaced with actual resources in the game), I think it would be received really well.
@Honk 780 I liked the creativity. Your preferred weapons could be completely different than someone else's because they had different ideas. How they implemented the material gathering... That was bad in my opinion.
@@aarlavaan I think EA retained the rights to the games and IP, not the company, so it is possible if people are ok with putting aside the moral dilemma of further supporting the same publisher that killed the original devs
Figured it was only a matter of time until you reviewed Resident Evil in space. And I make that comparison with the highest regards to the game. This is for sure a favorite of mine.
In order to change the V-sync Value manually you must locate the settings.txt (show hidden files enabled) located at (User)\AppData\Local\Electronic Arts\Dead Space\settings.txt. once open you can change the V-sync Value from 60 to 120 (or double your Monitors Refresh rate). By doing this you should have a proper 60fps with V-sync. So in settings.txt if the V-sync Value is 60, the game will run at 30, if the value is 120 it will run at 60fps, at 240 it will run at 120fps and so on. **Please Note** you will still have potential physics and wall glitches if you run the game over 60, the game was not designed to run higher** The game engine cuts the refresh rate in half whenever you enable V-sync so doubling it in the Settings.txt "Tricks" the game into thinking it cuts it in half. BUGS & STUTTERS BE GONE!! Hope this helps.
Honestly, the voice actor of Isaac is great, they did a good job in Dead Space 2. And in fact for a game so realistic as Dead space, a silent protagonist sound kinda awkward, the game is almost perfect in any way, but is in during those conversations that It falls flat... It makes sense a silent protagonist for Doom Slayer he is almost as alien as the demons he faced, it kind gives and aura of a mighty archangel who does understand the language of mankind, but doesn't speak it. Issac is no demon slayer, he is just an engineer, theres no reason for him to be a silent protagonist.
I think it actually looks good in 2021 and has aged well even though it doesnt feature most of the modern graphics and features such as ray tracing. You can make the game look much more modern by installing Reshade and using some of its filters such as film grain or chromatic aberration. But maybe they'll release a remastered version for the new consoles in the future since the Dead Space franchise is a classic!
NO, after the disaster that was the WC3 remaster and now the Mass Effect remaster Dead Space should be left alone. Perhaps a trilogy package with bonus featurettes and goodies, sure. No remasters, I don't trust the modern game industry to not fuck it up.
When I finally burned the regenerator alive I actually screamed "burn in hell motherfucker" at the top of my lungs it was so out of the ordinary my father came to check to make sure everything was all right and when I try to explain to him what happened he just looked at me like I was crazy.
Completely agree, there’s no game that does it like dead space. It was truly ahead of its time, never played another game like it. Looking forward to their new project!
Many of the staff members behind Dead Space have moved to a different studio and are currently working on a Dead Space spiritual successor. Due to license agreements & copyrights, they can't make a direct sequel, but they are making a game very much like Dead Space. The game they are making is called, "The Calisto Protocol", and it is heavily inspired by Dead Space. Its not expected to come out til 2022, but it looks very promising.
Man, I just have to say I'm super glad I recently found your channel. At first I was of the impression it would be an exclusively Resi channel, which would still be cool, but colour me delighted when I saw your catalogue of videos on immersive sims. You strike a good balance between humour and detailed analysis, and clearly put in the research to provide lots of cool tidbits about the titles you cover. Plus, your choice in games is just great. Keep on this track, because this channel will likely blow up.
@@samspade8830 dead space is absolutely survival horror. The second and third games were not. They are more action/adventure. But the first game totally is.
@@aarlavaan The first game is not either. Look to the original RE trilogy for true survival horror. Look to Alien Isolation for true survival horror. Hell, even the Clock Tower, Silent Hill, and Alone in the Dark game series. A true survival horror game doesn't have enemies that can shoot things at you or can run faster than you. A true survival horror is sectional, not chapter based. Just because a game has limited ammo doesn't make it a survival horror game. Dead Space is an action horror game with light survival horror elements, but it's not survival horror. It wants to be survival horror but it's not.
Dead Space is without a doubt one of my favorite game IPs of all time, so I'll take any chance I can get to see the series be revived. One of them, like you mentioned, could be a remaster. Even though graphically the games have aged quite well, I wouldn't mind another excuse to replay them. The other would be new entry in VR or adaptation of an existing one to VR. I feel like Dead Space is definitely one of those series that would translate better to VR than most (looking at you Far Cry 3). The in-world HUDs and inventory menus, the limb dismemberment mechanic, the suits, the horror. It's good opportunity that EA will probably miss out on, sadly.
I have religiously been talking to people about how much I love this game, max Payne 1&2, Alan Wake, fear, condemned 1&2, skate, I love these games so much and really wish they would have a comeback in this style of games.
14:35 I absolutely love that style of map, it's perfect because it's more than believable, being an engineer a system like that makes perfect sense, it shows you exactly where you should be without throwing a whole map at you, very simple and effective design
Nah man, EA saves ruining both a game franchise and dev studio for after they release their 2nd or 3rd game. It's thanks to RE4 we got Dead Space. Big inspiration for the 1st Gears of War too. Capcom sure could use competition against RE to keep that franchise from going bad now. No Dead Space, Silent Hill, Alone In The Dark, etc now. There are two games trying to be spiritual successors to Dead Space. One is being made by former Dead Space devs. The other, Negative Atmosphere, is a neat little indie game.
@XeenoSkull, I hope so. They need the competition in the AAA market, especially after RE3 Remake and now RE Village. Hopefully, that Dead Space spiritual successor will be single player focused. Don't make the mistake that both Dead Space 3 and FEAR 3 did.
To be honest, DS isn't the most terrifying game i have played... Alien: Isolation hold the bar higher, is absolutely terrifying be completely powerless against the alien, that in the game is basically imortal, all you can do is hide from him and pray that he doesn't smell you under a desk or find you inside a locker. Isaac was pretty much a space Rambo from the start, while Amanda Ripley was basically her mother in the first movie.
@@civilizedsquid2455 AI is on another level, because you literally play in first person. If you want one example of a similar game as Darkwood, play Osiris: New Dawn. The principle is the same, but it isn't scary Darkwood, also the setting isn't the same ( you are a lonely astronaut stranded in an alien planet). And it is in first person.
Glenn schofield is legend. And now he’s a major part of the team making the Callisto protocol. That game will be beautiful and I’m sure absolutely terrifying.
Probably the 1st game I ever played that had me in perpetual paranoia because I was convinced every single sound meant a monster was coming; doors closing loudly behind me; monster coming. Machines turning on; monster coming. Pipes making noises; monster coming. Garbage rolling around; monster coming. Walls making creaking noises; monster coming, etc. Jeez I spent more time doing 360's than anything else. Beautiful game.
So I'm working on a video right now on RE4, and since it's been awhile, I felt the Island had a drop in quality. Replaying it, the Island doesn't have as large of a quality dropoff as I remember.
This is an awesome video. Feels more like a documentary than just a review. I’ve never played dead space, but I’m going to get in on of after watching this. I just hope the workarounds to get it to run well aren’t too much of a headache.
Good job with the video. I’m not a big fan of horror but I liked Dead Space 1 & 2 due to their worlds. I love these futuristic settings that are somewhat grounded in reality. Like the environments and technology from Dead Space, they don’t feel like wild guesses, but natural evolutions from the ones we see today
The black guy and white lady arguing trying to convince you to take the others side making you confused who the bad guy is between them was one of the highlights the sequels didn't do nearly as well, this is probably the only time I was sad the black guy died lol. I don't like when a game gets you attached to other characters on the journey just take them out in stupid ways, just look at the whole game of alien isolation.
Hope you actually cover the tie iin mobile game Dead Space Mobile its actually a very faithful game that explains what happens on the station before you get there in Dead Space 2. Alot of Dead Space retrospectives never cover it despite it being important in the lore
"Reads the title" Well, yeah... Until they did. Dead Space is a classic. Currently in RE marathon, playing through most mainline RE games ending with REVillage which I haven't played yet. I need to play DS trilogy again later. Currently playing RE6 and DS3 is genuinly better than RE6, even though they kind of share some of the same problems.
15:00 I just finally played through Dead Space for the first time and I almost immediately forgot about the locator. I played nearly the entire game without directions. Very rarely did I need to use the map but it was atrocious. But what stuck out to me is how I didn't need it. The ship seemed realistic enough and my objectives made clear enough that I could easily find my way around without getting lost at all. Near the end of the game I finally rediscovered the locator and I started using it quite a bit in the last two chapters. Way more than was necessary even though I probably already knew where i was going. So although it's a good feature for people who get lost easily it's also really tempting to abuse. Now that I'm on Dead Space 2 I've been using it to see the main path so I can avoid it and explore side areas first. Also similarly to the System Shock games and Resident Evil series I can still map out areas in my head well after having finished the game. Especially the early game chapters and the bridge. That's some good shit.
Well mines dead space 3 lol but yea ded space is soo good in both gameplay horer and graphics hell the graphics iven today hold up unbelievable well . I would love to see backward compatability for the game on the new ps5 and Xbox or a brand new game in the franchise would be epic but thay would half to have the og dev team atleest most of them.
I’ve always loved the dead space franchise nice balance of horror and action that is the case for the one and two , three was to much action and the lore was hard to follow in the third game really enjoyed the first and second game didn’t like the third at all , also I enjoyed the animated movies and series surrounding the dead space series
Wouldn't say I'm hyped, been burned too many times with AAA games. But I am cautiously optimistic for it. As long as it is single player focused, I'm in.
Hi boulder punch I’m a relatively new fan and I watched your old videos on thief and how it had really good sound design I was wondering if you’ve played a game called hunt showdown it’s a multiplayer can that heavily relies on sound and being cautious I recommend it if you haven’t played it
I really wish EA would remaster the Dead Space trilogy for current (PS4 & XBO) and next-gen (PS5 & XBSX) but its EA, so unless they can cram numerous greedy micro-transactions then they aren't interested. Its a real shame, cause I want to replay this series on my PS4 or XBO, but can't.
The hype for resident evil 5 swallowed this game on release and kept the review scores down expecting a masterpiece to top this and people couldn't see the forest for the trees... This was a masterpiece
First Dead Space is absolute masterpiece. So much suspense from the beginning to the end of the game. Now triple-A horror games can't scare until the credits. Because it won't make much money for greedy publishers
Great job on this video, you earned yourself a new subscriber! Such an awesome game! I was 13 as it came out and I fucking loved it! Also scared the shit out of me, but in the best way. The limited hud, the gameplay relevant gore & dissmemberment, the gothic architecture of the ship. This is the type of game influencing people to get into game development (at least in my case :D) with great design and very competent execution. Just like they were inspired by the system shock series, I'm part of a generation inspired by dead space.
I appreciate how much work was put into the research on this video. Do you still have the Xbox test footage? All I can find is poor camera footage of a monitor. Again, great video.
regarding the game intro section of your video: No, the fact that necromorphs are thrown immediately at you, is not a shortcoming....it's one of the best parts of the game. It doesn't take time to 'breathe' because it's meant to be jarringly immediate: the exposition quickly sets the themes up. Yes, it's a ship with thousands of crew members that can't respond to a single radio call...yes, we have an S.O.S we're responding to...the player knows she's about to play a horror experience. The game introduces necromorphs early in order to set up the themes that there are multiple types of them. That they're evolving, and unpredictable- Alien: Isolation needs to 'breathe' because it 's a game based on a 35 year old movie. Dead Space only needed to breathe an hour and a half into the playtime so that the player didn't kill themselves.
I agree, Dead Space is first and foremost a shooter. The horror comes mainly from how tough the enemies are and how much of a glass cannon Issac is. A slow start works fine when your game isn't about shooting shit dead, but it would just make Dead Space a slog to replay
I personally think that they won’t do a Dead Space trilogy remaster. Unless they change some portions of the code between them to add dlc for the first two games and some way the earn the mk-v parts without going online on the third game. Even if they release the first two without dlc for PC they still have tackle the mk-k parts situation.
Wouldn't too hard, they can honestly entirely ignore the enhanced parts all together or just make them auto unlocks on NG+ or as a reward for beting the game on X difficulty.
@@Zamusss we are talking about EA. :) . And you have the example of ME Remaster collection that missed 1 or 2 dlc. Even though they weren’t very important at their time… it gives you an idea of what could happen if there was a DS collection. They could have added them but they chose not to make the effort to do it. I doubt they want to get more backlash because of differences between versions like there were between the console and pc versions of the first two DS.
@@SolSeal To be fair to Bioware, they tried to get the missing Mass Effect DLC back, but some of the source code was missing. They explained it in great lenghts during an interview, having contacted old members of the studios, trying to find the physical hard drives used 15 years ago to see if something was on there, etc, it's not about an "effort" to make, the material was just lost, hard to do anything about that ... The could have remade it from scratch, but it wouldn't fit the game at all and stand out like a sore thumb. (Pinnacle Station was really useless and boring anyway, it was just a "gun course" DLC on a space station with no tie to the main plot in a game where gunplay was a weak point)
Dead Space is an amazingly atmospheric game, however we are now 13 years past its original release date and it STILL has the same graphical bugs that kill the game during the first 15 minutes, during the turret boss fight section, and finally the final chapter dragging the Marker along for me after all this time. That this happens without fail, and requires the same solution everytime is still the only reason I go back to DS2 over the first any time I play the series.
I agree that Dead Space 3 is the worst in the series but I don't view it as a bad game, just a bad survival horror game. Dead Space 3 is not Resident Evil 6 but it's on par with Resident Evil 5 in terms of horror and its roots. I enjoyed Dead Space 3 but locking a percentage of the game behind co-op irked me for sure. I could be wrong but survival horror/horror game fans such as myself enjoy the isolation the genre tends to provide. The addition of co-op removes the anxiousness and loneliness that such isolation provides. Once this occurs what you've created is a horror themed 3rd person bro-shooter.
I really adore this game. Made it a father-son thing with my dad watching me play and giving me suggestions if I got stuck. Normally he falls asleep while I'm playing something, but he stayed awake every time I'd play Dead Space and would ask me if I was 'gonna play today' almost daily. In a weird way, I owe it to this game for creating that moment between my dad and I. Can't wait for the remake! I started playing 2 but then college kicked my ass, so it's on hold lol. It's really great that people are still talking about this game all these years later.
So horror fan here. Watched them since a young age. When I played this game for the first time I had to put it down for a couple of days because it surprisingly gave me some anxiety.... which was fucking great. Fantastic game.
I remember showing this to my girlfriend; that huge worm grabbed her immediately after I assured her not to worry about the game throwing cheap jump scares at you. We both yelled then laughed :)
God I am happy you are talking about this game. Getting my hypes up for Callisto Protocol even more and I thought it couldn't get higher after finding out it's setting is pulled from the original desgin doc for dead space one. Keep up the awesome work my guy.
