Looking to get this lens. For sure, with sports photography, go Manual and F8-11 w/shutter speed 500-1000th *AND* set to Auto-ISO. This is definitely the way to go - and *YES* learn to do back-focus if you haven't already.

There's nothing at all wrong with using Auto ISO at times. It's a tool just like Shutter or Aperture Priority. Tamron (and the other 3rd party lens manufacturers) are turning out great lenses these days. Many of them out perform OEM lenses for less money! Great review and video. Keep on clicking!

Couldn't agree more, I use auto ISO for all (fast action) sports photography. If your camera can handle higher ISOs why not? People should worry about capturing the moment, not the settings.

When I’m shooting action, especially outdoors, I usually set everything manually, including ISO. Unless you have a shadow on the field or track, the light on your subject does not change. The background might change, but a dark or light background is only going to fool the camera into overexposing or underexposing the subject itself. If I’m shooting in daylight, I will always set everything manually and leave it there. I only use any kind of automatic setting if I’m going to have changing light conditions (clouds or close to sunset).

good insight, Paul. everyone has a different workflow that works for them and that's great!

My biggest gripe with this lens is it's AF inconsistency, and by that I mean you could be focusing on a static subject (a wall) and 9/10 it will lock focus quickly, no problem. And for whatever reason, out of nowhere it sometimes refueses to lock focus or hunts for a bit. This isn't just limited to one copy either, as I've had this happen one three of these so far (all rented, but again, no the same lens so it's likely not an issue with just one copy). I also experienced a similar behavior on my 70-200 G2 lens too. Focuses fine about 80% of the time, but one or two times (out of 10) it would hunt or be unable to lock focus for some reason. I'd rather have a slower focusing lens that can lock focus every time than a fast one that can only lock focus 7 or 8 times out of 10. On most modern cameras, I wouldn't be afraid to set the auto ISO to range from 100 to 3200. I mean above 3200 OK, but up to that most APS-C and FF cameras perform quite well with minimal noise penalties. And really, if you get your exposure close so you don't have to adjut it too much in post, then it's fine. It's when you have to push your exposure in post (usually up because it's under exposed) that's where you start to see some nasty stuff (noise and possible banding). I agree. Just use auto ISO in this case and set it to what you feel is comfortable. My Nikon Z cameras I can shoot up to 6400 without any serious penalties to noise.

I was there in December when they opened, this year, right before all the horses started being put down. At that time I had my Nikon D7500, but gave it to my daughter, now using Sony a7Riii & a7ii with 3 lens 2 Sony 85mm & 50mm , also the Sigma 24mm art lens. It was a blast when I was there. Betting on the ponies too.

Auto ISO absolutely correct... That's how I did it at Keeneland in Lexington recently. And back button focus a must. Freeze the action at 1/1000 as your slowest... I might MIGHT experiment with f/8 instead of f/5.6. By the way, manual mode baby.

I'd love to see this lens being reviewed on an 80D & 7D (Mk II & soon Mk III) both for wildlife with emphasis on birds in flight, hawks, eagles, things of that nature, with a light peppering of songbirds to round it out.

i use the canon 5d mark 3 in this video. but i also use the sony a7riii as well. i would suggest looking at a camera that has a high fps since you want to catch the action.

I have a beginner question, do I need to switch off the IS when I sit my camera on a tripod with shutter speeds from 1600 to 2500?
@metal4k787
@metal4k787 4 года назад
Depends on the lens. Some yes some no. It would be wise to put it on your tripod and test it. Then you can see yourself if there are any difference. Zoom into your pics to see if fine details are sharp or blurred.

Hi Orcun, was just looking at this review & reading the replies on here, let me just throw something in the mix for you, A few months ago I tried the 70-200 f2.8 but like you say it is very big & heavy, I wanted a sports lens for a trip to Thailand & Australia so ended up going for the Nikon 70-200 f4, its a lot smaller & lighter then the f2.8 and after comparing it against a friends F2.8 , the f4 is just as fast to focus and that one f stop doesn't make a great deal of difference. It was more then comfortable & light enough to sit in a sports stadium in Oz and shoot unobtrusively all day where the f2.8 would not have been, the result were fantastic, its the bet lens I have ever bought, even to the point I use it for day to day shooting, hope this helps !

i guess they dont make an EF full frame version.. pitty.. whats the closest competitor for the money on the EF line with that wide of a range?
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 6 лет назад
i would say in that price range sigma would be another one to look at. canon also makes one.
@markm75
@markm75 6 лет назад
The only one i found with similar specs (and might be good) is the Tamron 28-300.. i think everything else had a much wider lower end (except the canon which runs twice as costly)
