Is CarPlay activated by your phone being connected by Bluetooth or do you have to plug your phone up to a lightning cable to hook it up to the Navtool?

With all cars even when factory installed it must be plugged by the lightning cable for carplay to operate.

Currently on the 2012 Acura TL everything works via bluetooth, there is no lightning cable connected for it to operate.
