Adam Carolla visits a Shelby museum to take a look at the original Ken Miles Ford GT40 race car that he raced at Le Mans in 1966 . Video also features Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
He didn't win because he intentionally slowed down, didn't he? Otherwise he would have won? The first American cars to win,& dominate the foreign tracks!
Yeah. When i was watching that movie. I was so pissed for Ken seeing McLaren enjoying the victory he didn't made. Nevertheless. It happened already. Sometimes being a Legend means that you are able to prove that you're better than everybody else . Without those flashy trophies or stupid titles. Being the best is the greatest trophy itself.
@@touringtiran3632 if you ever even google him, you'll find out that he's from New Zealand. But judging from your username, and your grammar, you probably can't.
That would have said a lot about McLaren...too bad it did not happen. I do note that GT40 #2 (1046) is a highly celebrated car and frequently copied while #1 (1015) not so much...maybe Superformance might be cranking out a few now.
Old Man on a Suzuki Dirtbike - Try learning the REAL history of the program and you'll realize that The ACO governing body for Le Mans are the ones to blame for the finish line fiasco, not Ford!
They fought tooth and nail for him to be able to drive in the race so he was afraid if he didn’t do what they asked he wouldn’t be able to drive for ford anymore
Themiya Meemaduma well I mean that made ken more respectable, slowing down to accept that dumbass Henry’s request. He followed them because he knew without Ford and Carol Shelby, he would’ve been stuck on his own and that he was treated like a really valuable employee.
Don’t forget that this was also Denny Hulme’s car. He came 2nd at Le Mans in ‘66 as well. And won the ‘67 F1 World Championship. Respect to a very tough racer.
@Ninjas Be Like Around 210mph in 1966 actually, fastest at lemans ever is around 250mph (20 years later, different car) soooo....... Still pretty good tho
@sermerlin1 - And you are the literal epitome of a total Moron. You're not even capable of pulling off a good Troll act! What glorious 3rd world hole do you live in, loser?
For which country? It was built in Slough in England, and based on a British Lola design, and was driven by an Englishman and a Kiwi. BUT It did have an American engine, and Shelby's team were obviously from the states. In my view the GT40 is a a collaborative British and American effort, at least up until '66. After that they kind of went their own ways (John Wyer running the Mirage M1 and MkI GT40's while the US team ran the MkIV)
My parents went to the museum and brought home a little die-cast replica car for me as a gift. I squealed while watching the movie when I realized it was Ken Miles' hero car. I now have it displayed proudly on my desk ^_^
Adam has been the most prominent figure trying to get the story made into a movie for many years. He made a couple documentaries about the 24 hour war and carrol Shelby before the movie that are available on Netflix now
The movie was filmed beautifully and made you feel like you were actually in the car racing with Ken Miles. Perfectly cast too! Loved every single moment of it, tears and all! It should win the Oscar for best film, best cinematography and a tribute.should be made, on stage, for Ken Miles and his contribution to get Ford to the finish line! Without him who knows where Ford would be now. Christian Bale and Matt Damon were superb and didn't even get nominated. They breathed life into a sad but true story that should be recognized as one of the greatest life stories ever told. Ken Miles is the true Triple Crown winner in my heart and always will be. This movie brings him the respect he deserves up front to the checkered flag where it belongs! Ken Miles Triple Crown Winner! Best damn driver of all time! 👑👑👑⏱🏎🏁🏁🏁🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸❤❤❤🍾🥂💐💐💐💛🐝💛
Yep, and it was the Le Mans people who are responsible for that, someone from Ford consulted the Le Mans officials about it and they told Ford that if Miles crossed first he'd be declared the winner, but right after the finish they reneged and declared him 2nd, I'm not a Ford fan sticking up for them but the truths the truth, the Le Mans people are the bad guys in that deal.
Ford ripped off Ken Brock as well. Brock made the Daytona Cobra and won the GT class, then got fired. 50 years later, it's a stupid truck and SUV company.
It is a beautiful thing that that GT40 still exists. It’s like a rolling Mount Rushmore. I’d pass out if I got to touch it. God bless Ken Miles. Thank God he’s finally getting the recognition he deserved.
@@christianmotley262 - The whole purpose of some wild colors is to make it much easier to visually tell one from another, especially in the darker hours of the race. The colors chosen had nothing at all to do with exciting style!
I'm really happy to see Ken Miles get more widespread recognition with the release of the Ford v Ferrari film. It's a story that deserves to be told. Unfortunately, a lot of the nuance is being lost in the simplified version of the story. The team orders to slow down and organize a team photo came hours before the end of the race. It wasn't as simple as Miles slowing down for the others right at the end. The performance and strategy of all cars was affected by the move. It is impossible to know which car (#1 or #2) would have come out on top without a true all out race to the finish. You'll notice that in interviews with McLaren and Amon, that they don't feel like frauds or trophy thieves. They were just as much in contention and the true pace and race were interrupted long before the final lap.
@@taijikimura247 Please enlighten me. What time were the orders given to each car? When did each car respond to the orders. How far apart were the cars? What was the expected pit strategy for both cars? After filling in this info for me, please explain how you are so certain.
@@edcar8713 Mazda? Not even close, the engine sound was great but in charisma, in design, all GT40 and 917´s all pack and last but not the least in number of victories, poor great Mazda.
OK, smartass, do you want a medal for knowing Shelby? Virtually all commenters felt both Damon and Bale did an excellent job, so you are clearly in the minority here.
If you want to see an authentic movie about long distance racing, watch the Steve McQueen version of "LeMans". The racing scenes in Ford v Ferrari are nearly all pure CGI phony.
I'm a simple guy. I saw the movie, and I totally admire the guys. In real life, it must have been amazing! I like both Christian Bale, and Matt Damon for amazing acting. I love the scene from the movie when Ken Miles throws a wrench at his car, and Shelby asks for the wrench to be framed. What honour, what respect! Also, when Matt finally gives back the wrench to his son, I couldn't stop myself from crying. Amazing guys, amazing movie!
m5503 Datpete . Just got back from the Movie , when the race started we Laughed and said Taurus . Our Winter car is a 2005 Taurus that has Door Problems when it is really cold . When I warmed it up for our Storm this week I entered thru the passenger Door to not piss off the Driver Door . Its old and the Door is thin and every thing freezes up inside , Latch ,Lock and Window . I had a G.I web Belt and ammo sling strapped from my leg to the Passenger Door to keep it closed . But the Car Handles Great in the Snow and when it Thaws out it is Good to Drive .
so the reason why the door jammed in the real race was that ken's helmet slammed against the door frame and bent it. It was replicated in the movie by bending the door track because it wasn't a real car but a camera green screen vehicle
WM-Peugueot piloted by Roger Dorchy broke 405kph (project 400) before the chicanes were installed. It was a marketing stunt for their new 405 passenger car. Car was never intended to last the race. -U10
Damn thats fast! And to think with no assists of any kinds. Incredible incredible. Then those lights doing that at night. Covering more road than your eyes could pick up.
okleydokley It really didn’t, it’s not a documentary but it wasn’t some sloppy Michael Bay film like you exaggerate it to be. It’s just a great story, told by great actors and cut into a span of just 2 hours.
Miles, I completely agree with you. it was a phenomenal film for entertainment not a documentary. As a die hard chevy guy i could appreciate it and loved it. If you watch some of Carol Shelby's interviews the movie is more accurate than most people realize. Ford Executives hated him and Ken.
clam digger That’s why I said it’s not a documentary and it was never meant to be. That’s like condescending a shooter game for not being a good racing game. That’s not how that works. It’s not a History Channel exclusive, it was two big star Hollywood actors, telling a story in a timely manner. They did it quite well too, if you’re a REAL fan of the actual story, you’ll like just about everything regarding the topic, not just the black and white text book films.
I was lucky enough to meet Ken Miles' co- driver of the same Car at Lemans - Lloyd Ruby. It was at Laguna Seca, during Historic Car Week in Monterey. When Ford was the featured "marque", in the early 2000's. I told Him, how He was a "childhood hero". A Texan, but a humble Gentleman. As He seemed embarrassed by my "hero worship". I'll always prize His autograph.
@@k.t.1641 I comment something to that effect on every kimmel video I see. He's bowed to the fems, but was everything they hate just a few years ago. Adam is Adam, always will be.
It’s great what this film has done, for years only petrol-heads and motorsports enthusiasts knew of the obsession Ford had with toppling Ferrari and the price paid in lives and dollars. This was not just about the common vehicle manufacturers triumph over a legendary sports car racing specialist, but ironically about the same industrial giants ignorance and manipulation of the tireless effort of a handful of talented engineers and drivers who made that inaugural US victory possible. Ken Miles especially, was killed in 1967 testing a prototype of the car that eventually became the All American Le Mans victor that year, complete with 1st champagne celebration. The Legacy of Fords triumphs in motorsport would look very different without contribution from Ken Miles as well as Caroll Shelby.
Correction to 1:56 claim, The fastest-ever top speed recorded on the Mulsanne straight was 405km/h (251mph)by Roger Dorchy in a WM Peugeot P88, that was in 1988 when the chicanes weren't introduced yet.
Easy there bud. If it not for the Deuce there would have been no Ford GT program at Le Mans. He wanted to shove pasta up the old guinnea’s a$$. And that he did.
Point is what was mentioned by Miles during meeting with Shelby-bureaucracy stands in the way of innovation in companies like Ford. Miles would have been much more appreciated in a company like Ferrari. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ford stops to exist in the future , whereas Ferrari keeps prospering because of their innovative and winning company culture
Shohruh Jurakulov - really? Ford produces more vehicles in a day than Ferrari in its history (most likely). Cars that people can actually use for everyday life. There’s hollywood and theres reality.
Ken Miles, what a crazy individual. What a brilliant mechanics and driver. He should have sped up at from the last corner onto the front straight and taken the win. He deserved it. Sure wish I could have met him. RIP, KM. The speed record for the Mulsanne was set in 1988 by Roger Dorchy in a WM P88 at 253mph. It ran for only about four hours and was done. That record still stands because the chicanes were installed the next year.
Am I the only one who would just melt if he reached in and fired it up 😁 love that car but it almost seems sac religious to see it sitting in a museum, even if it’s worth 25 or 30 million it’s a dragon that needs to breathe fire!!! Great car! Great movie 🍿
Big…. big balls these men had back in those days of racing. It's common to hear 170 plus speeds in modern racing, still takes balls. But not like the "ole timers"
Stanley - There has never been a directive that all movies must be historically accurate, that's why there are movies, and there are documentaries. Want the facts? Read GoLike Hell, by A.J. Baime - great account of the Ferrari/Ford grudge.
when the teacher asked us “what is your dream car?” i answered Ken Miles’s 1966 Le Mans Ford GT40, and the class was looking at me like “what the fuck?” my class is really uncultured
Your story definitely has to be true. I mean I the whole world should know what a Ken Miles 1966 LeMans Ford GT40 is correct!? I believed every word you wrote.
i came across a gt40 smashed up sitting in a carport, knew it was real as made in metal. Was told by drummer acdc phil rudd that it is worth more than what i would make all my working life, just about gave up work and went fishing which i did in the end
Actually the story I have heard is that Ken was a true professional and when he was told to slow down to do a three way tie for first that Ford had worked out with the officials he did as he was told and it wasn't until after the race that Le Mans marshals decided the winner would be the GT40 that started the furthest back on the grid having traveled the longest distance and thus would be deemed the winner that they would not let a three way tie enter the record books. Regardless, yes Ken won that race and got robbed but here we are talking about it 44 years later so maybe it ended up working out for Ken after all.
Actually in my opinion it should be lent/leased to the Smithsonian Museum as an integral part of our U.S. History. The leadership of Ford Motor Company, Lotus, Ken Miles and Carrol Shelby took on the most successful racing team in Italy and beat them at the most famous racetrack in the world. Ordinary men did an extraordinary achievement in the 1960's.
2:48 "The stick shift is on the right for the Americans!' - utter rubbish. The transaxles of the period were all like this. The first GT40's had a Colotti transaxle straight from a F1 car of the era and then swiftly onto the ZF transaxles - they all had right-hand gear change!
The best thing about ken miles, even tho he got robbed by Ford, he told the press to not say anything bad about Ford because the press was about to rip Ford apart and ridicule them. He has a heart of gold and should be recognized as a 3 crowned winner. I’m glad he is in the Motorsport hall of fame too.
Sorry, I have to disagree with the comment that this is the most famous, historic Ford GT40 in existence. That has got to be the Gulf GT 40 chassis #1075. In fact, I would say that #1075 is arguably the most valuable car on the planet . Show me another car with the following racing pedigree. #1075 won Le Mans twice, 1968 and 1969, it also won the Sebring 12 Hour race in 1969, the BOAC 6 hour race in 1968, Spa 1000km in race in 1968 and the Watkins Glen 6 hour race in 1968. 3rd at the Nurburgring 1000 km in 1969 and pole position at the Daytona 24 h race in 1968 This is to the Americans ( No slur intended guys so don't rip me a new one) an irrelevance because it was a bunch of Poms that achieved these results with this remarkable car along with Gulf sponsorship after Carroll Shelby pronounced the GT 40 as obsolete in 1967. This car resides in Arizona now and is very carefully cherished by it's current owner. It is unrestored and in the same specification it was after the 1969 Le Mans 24 h race victory

@@MindDezign I was also around back in the 70's so don't even try your nonsense with me, 70's or not you couldn't put a plate on something that didn't have a title, and back in the 70's the police were even worse at pulling over a vehicle with just an illegal exhaust, you wouldn't have been able to make it 10 miles in a GT40 without a cop taking off after a car they knew couldn't be registered for the road. You're telling stories.
Brian Sakal your talking about 20 years later in a car that probably was much lighter and an engine that was almost certainly turbocharged. all records will be broken with technology advances but 238 in 1966 in those ancient cars and ancient equipment was quite an accomplishment.
@@mikeburks9641 Oh God yes, especially when you consider the advancements in tires, brakes, shocks, etc in those 20 years, what's really amazing is how much further they've come till now since the late 80's.
