Adam, your journey from radio tinkering to podcasting pioneer is remarkable! How did your time in pirate radio shape your approach to podcasting, especially in terms of creating that crucial feedback loop with your audience?
Interesting how Adam has changed his tune over money and success in podcasting from what I remember back in the day. (Tim from Radio Clash -hi! Still podcasting nearly 20 years later....you see it wasn't about numbers or money for me). Early Podshow it felt it was very much 'how can we monetise this?' I was dead against money in podcasting and that focus on numbers, that came in aroun 2005--6 which unsurprisingly crashed and burned in the first podcasting bubble. But I guess that experience changed his views on that back to the pirate radio days. I didn't know that, into CB (ditto) and pirate radio early on - that was really cool to hear about that. And yes, if he was 10 years ahead, I guess I was 15 years ahead about value being way more than money 😛 I like the idea of value being as much feedback, interaction, help, barter etc - it's true the industry focuses WAY too much on numbers and money - and that corporatisation of podcasting has really become part of the problem in the last 10-15 years. As you both say, the value is deeper and I tell new podcasters exactly what you said - it's about what you want to do and podcasting what you love and finding a core audience - it's really nichecasting, that's a better name. Really disagree about bitcoin though - like NFTs there is real ecological and ethical issues with bitcoin, and a lot of pump and dump/fraud means I'd rather micropayments scheme uses something more like Ko-Fi or Paypal because the magic beans can be meaningless when the exchange crashes or someone rips off the wallet. I do not trust Bitcoin at all. And I was one of the victims of Apple and Spotigy removing my podcast...back now but was off for a few years - so i am very pro-Podcast Index, glad it exists.
