Kamer Oudste Yeah sure. I'm doing CPE next year, so I have been paying attention. But I won't tell you more about my English, as you're clearly trying to bait me into an internet argument by starting with an ad hominem.
Cretium Your CPE is not impressive so don't try to brag with it. Any fool can do CPE. What's even worse: 'hymen' is a Dutch word. The fact that you don't even know *that*, tells me a lot about your level of education. Doesn't look good, I can tell you.
Kamer Oudste I'd rather have confidence so I won't feel the need to confirm my intelligence. I'd also rather have friends than a huge ego. Whatever, suit yourself.
When I lived in Den Haag, other foreigners would shit their pants at the prospect of pronouncing Scheveningen or 's-Gravenhage. Luckily I did een cursus in Leiden and got to learn a little bit van de Nederlandse taal.
+Ajenna That's what some dutch people sound like when speaking English. It seems all dutch people speak the language incredibly well, but some say a 'sh' sound for an 's'.
I think I'm one of not a lot of Dutchmen that actually understands what a hymen is, but I could still relate with that Dutch audience! I'd definitely see Dutch people doing exactly that.
I sincerely hope he realises in dutch 'hyman' is actually a last name. It's spelt diffently but it sounds the same. And it doesn't have the same meaning as it does in english. THAT'S why he got funny looks.
Another reason why the Dutch probably didn't get it, is that Hyman is actually a pretty common Dutch surname. In fact, chances are great that she has Dutch ancestors. So our brain inmediately recognizes the word as something very normal. Thumbs up for this video this guy is funny.
Tbh, I don't think the audience laughed just to be polite. They all went to an English speaking comedian, so they all felt pretty confident about their english skills, therefore I bet many people laughed because they didn't want to seem stupid.
esmee xxxx No we're not. We think we are, and perhaps it's above average compared to other Europeans, but the accent is horrible and the grammar is even worse. Our vocabulary is fine, but it still lacks words beyond everyday conversations (like hymen). Overall I wouldn't say our english is anywhere near good.
i'm Dutch and have gotten into so much trouble over the years with the non-dutch lol. took me quite some time before I figured it out. its all about not-confronting people with uncomfortable things, it freaks them out, especially the British but many cultures have this notion of using the love-blanket, they know its there, just ignore it, and then the Dutch come in......seriously, its both hilarious, exhausting and confusing. even in plain business its a continuous battle.
@@PS987654321PS Phoney? What part of the country did you visit lmao. The Dutch are said to be direct and the most realistic, down-to-earth people you'll ever meet lmao. Charmless is just another interpretation of 'direct'.
The dutch are a bit unsmily and dull at first, but if you sit down and have a couple beers, they're very nice and also very frank and honest. And if you have more than a couple beers, they're among the best people to party with!
Lol, thats true. Even if I don't understand the joke, but I know the person is joking, I just laugh to be polite. But in public, Dutch are generally not polite at all. Sorry, but its true.
I'm dutch and Iknew what 'hymen' was, but know the feeling! Once I was at the musical 'We Will Rock You' in London with my class and I laughed at a joke then someone asked me what was just said. I had no idea what to tell him.
And Adam Hills is just great!
hans van cobij I've deleted my own comments before posting when i realised they were coming from typical dutch ways of saying things, proverbs and such, realising that it would make zero sense to an english audience. Language barriers can be funny though and even can bring people together
em nope dutchman are polite to you that is true at least if your at the right side of the country there are aslo citys that are not so polite like were i live becaus how do i explane this o yea some one nockt over a beer of some one in a barr at a ecident do you know what happen 20 minutes later he was in a hospital beeing kick down to the ground by five men
MBoeltje41 Sorry but dyslexia might mix up stuff it doesnt replace words with other words that dont fit there at all thast just shameless retardation. Coming from a fellow Dutchie with dyslexia ;)
In the 80s I often performed solo in Amsterdam. They are a nation that I found to be very 'Open'. And it's there I was able to Expand my Act. I was in Rotterdam one time with a Dutch friend and he parked his car on a forbidden Spot to visit someone quickly. When he came out, a Traffic Warden was writing him a 'Ticket'. He said to the Warden whilst pointing to a very expensive Sports car that was parked behind his car "Hey, give him a ticket instead. he has the money" The Warden tore the ticket up he had just written out and proceeded to do what my friend had requested.
Lovely compliment! Love the accetn en great that he rememberd het maagdenvlies! Altough i say hymen as well instead of "maagdenvlies" (not so much tough)!
I doubt this guy has even spoken to an actual Dutch person. He's clearly mimicking Mike Myers' Dutch character from "Gold Member." i.e. He doesn't sound Dutch in the least.
OMG that is so Dutch! It's such a typical thing when if we didn't hear someone properly or if you didn't understand, you just pretend, so you don't bother or insult them, or just because you're too embarressed to ask again. So you just laugh or nod or something. XDD
I would not consider the Dutch polite, and I'm one myself. His attempt at a Dutch accent isn't very good, although his "maagdenvlies" is quite reasonably pronounced. And yes, most Dutch people would not know the word hymen, and even though I do know the word, I at first didn't understand what he was saying or what joke he was trying to make, as I thought he said something like "Highman".
Lol no, I didn't get the joke at the beginning of the video when he said it, but then he said 'maagdenvlies' and I literally rolled on the floor laughing xd
dutch are so awesome any english speakin comedian can come here and do a show and be great , i dont think we cant do the same in return cause nobody understand what we say
I'm Dutch, but was taught UK English. Other than that I don't see anything that contradicts my comment, to be honest. Our generation of the Dutch grows up with English, my 51 year old father and 50 year old mother had to learn most of their English themselves and their parents couldn't speak English at all. As I said, we have a vast amount of people that speak English, but most of them translate their thoughts to English instead of just speaking it fluently. I prefer English over Dutch, too.
I am Dutch and I have. It's mostly people from Noord and South Holland though. Their accent is clearly heard because some of the sounds in their accent are very different from English.
Germans and Dutch are basically the same kind of people, they're languages belong to the same family. So really it isn't surprising that for a non native they sound very similar.
