I feel like the 90s and 00s were all about being the edgiest edge lord. Sometimes, I have horrible flashbacks to things I said and people I hurt. While I'm proud of the progress I made, I hope my words didn't damage anyone in their developing years.

What I love most about this podcast is how you guys can have an emotionally mature conversations and still be able to keep it humorous and enjoyable for others to listen to.

Jarvis talking about the attack helicopter jokes made me remember how everyone in my friend group used to say that when I was younger. Naturally, being surrounded by those people, I started saying it too. Didn’t realize exactly what it was implying until way later. (Though I will say, they did make me slightly uncomfortable back then as well) I’m transgender too, and a lot of them knew it at the time. Then again, I was at a Christian school, so that’s just how it goes.

I remember being 17 and at that time I was one the of the only out trans/non binary ppl at my camp. The director shared an attack helicopter joke that a camper made on a form. I thought the director was chill but I remember feeling extremely uncomfortable after that, it was different from the ironic humor I might hear from my affirming friends. He was my boss, so that caused a strain when I had to go to him for other issues. I don’t mean to sound like a dick but at 17/in 2017, I knew it was wrong lol. It’s just weird to hear a 30 year old blame it on age, but I do appreciate acknowledging whatever ignorance you had at that time.

Before I knew I was trans and gay I would call things I didn’t like gay and I’d make the attack helicopter jokes. I was a child, so I don’t hold it against myself and I feel like forgiveness for middle school nonsense isn’t too hard to earn.

oh yeah middle school me gave so many white friends an n word pass because i’ve been the lone black friend for my entire life. i let them use the n word, i let them call me an oreo, i laughed at their friend chicken grape soda watermelon no dad jokes. i did the polar opposite of jordan, i didn’t know any other black people as a result of where i grew up but instead i coded HARD and did everything in my power to fit in with my white peers. i wore “oreo” as almost a personality trait and point of pride, but i honestly internalized a ton of racism (and sexism and transphobia as well seeing as nearly all my friends for most of my formative years were cis white guys and i was a weird black girl) and never stood up for myself or anyone like me. i judged my uncle for using aave, i wore cheap wigs or cut my hair short (partially because i got bullied and harassed even by my friends for my curls) i prided myself on not listening to rap, everything. i’ve done a ton of work on myself over the last few years and am significantly more proud and aware of how i occupy space and i’m a lot less lenient about how other people act around me. 14 year old me really was an uncle tom ass bitch but i’ve worked my ass off to become a black queer person who is very much in touch with and proud of who i am. i may still have many white friends but i do not let them forget we are not the same and i don’t let them stay complacent when they slip. i am not the frankly racist little kid i was a decade ago
