Tai chi was developed as a fighting art, push hand was in the beginning as "fighting hand", but training in fighting hand caused unnecessary injuries which they later changed it to push hand to make it more gentle for sensitivity and balance, for a trained person against an untrained person the result is of what we see today in a lot of these tai chi gurus who push with passive resistant and compliant students, nowadays they package push hand as some kind of mystical force to make it an attracting point to "attract", but to have that push hand skill still needs a long time to train, push hand in the old days was a beginning phase of training to fight and follow by many other trainings, just a little tai chi history, please look it up before dive into the art

i appreciate what Adam Mizner does. But from a purpose oriented perspective you can indeed ask what the reason is to be able to do this. Therefore i find your comment, that only this is authentic kung fu, very unfair and onesided. There are a lot of people who say that a true martial art must be measured by its effectiveness. And this opinion has also its eligibility and truth. As Karate Master Motobu Chōki once said: "Nothing is more harmful to the world than a martial art that is not effective in actual self-defensive".
@DJAraRealSalsa
@DJAraRealSalsa 3 года назад
@@emsif I would recommend that you do some reading on the internal martial arts and watch more Sifu Mizner's videos including the interviews. What you see in the video above is a demonstration of the tai chi 'engine' at work, including how an opponent's body can be dominated by mere contact using the same 'engine'. A punch in the chest from a tai chi master, including a very short-range one can put you in the hospital or the cemetery using the same 'engine'. In kung fu philosphy, at least the one I have been exposed to, 'Soft' beats 'Hard'. Many minds do not understand the concept but it is fascinating to research and study it. By the way, what I mentioned about tai chi also holds true true for other internal arts such as Pa Kua and Hsing I as well as some of their Shaolin equivalents that are usally taught at the latter stages of one's kung fu journey. Once you built the faculties and the body necessary of tai chi then you can do with it what you please but I would suggest that the calmness of the mind and relaxation of the self involved in the internals will result in you not wanting to prove yourself in the ring, once you becom skillful. PS. At no time did I suggest that 'only this' was authentic kung fu. All traditional kung fu styles are authentic but the ones that lean more towards the external have different 'engines' which vary even amongst the external styles. The Wing Chun 'engine' is different from the Chow Gar Praying Mantis one - I know because those are my styles.

As much as I don't like charlatans - this man frequently says he avoids combat and anything like that. Both he and Damo are searching (admittedly incorrectly) for something exclusively internal. They must have thought my ancestors had a lot of free time and food (they didn't). If you send him to a proper gym in the rougher parts of Thailand - he'd be killed. Let alone have his woo-woo as you call it disproven. It's dangerous and not what he deserves. None of these people are looking for fighting ability. And yes it shows. It's a misrepresentation of Taiji 'fist' - but people are able to both do the research and travel these days. So your only real excuse for not knowing better is your own ignorance. Adam and Damo teach utter nonsense. But each to their own.

Anyways, if you were to be an instructor in tai chi, then i believe you have learn about the flow of the human body(of course with other factors, lets just focus on this factor). If i had gone with a much more physical detail, i'd say its momentum which increases one force, this however shows how one was able to create such tremendous force with what seems like very less momentum (fajing) and about this video, its how they were able to hit one pressure point precisely and force the joints of others and moving them through their flow unless you hadnt done it right, your opponent would be able to take you down, or if you had execute it properly, and if they hadn't followed your flow they would end up with unnecessary harms. Going through with that, i could say its like a one inch punch but you're applying almost the same thing to opponents pressure points and so on, its late here in asia. Been practicing for 7+ years, and it helps with lifting weight too. There's no magic, it's just body mechanics, and it's the same body we carry in everything we do. And so studying internal arts helps in any physical activity (did some climbing too, definitely helps). Lifting heavy weight (or doing kettlebells, the internal art of weightlifting), body conditioning , etc, are not to be opposed to these arts, they are in fact very synergetic. I'd say taichi is more a neurological practice than a physical one. You only develop little muscles used for posture, but you completely change the way you feel and use your body as a whole.

You're aware this is not a self defense class? He's showing skills, body mechanics, doing it slow so people can feel in details what's happening. Once you have those skills, when you use them in actual fight, it's not as slow and flowery. Think clinching from muay thai at a slightly longer range, that would be pretty much it.
@davidm9618
@davidm9618 4 года назад
@@Cynry Wrong - it is a self defense class if you are practicing for a fight, as you mention. And when sped up, it is even more useless because the opponent won't be a compliant mannequin or living crash test dummy. This is why Tai Chi "masters" , et al, are destroyed in real fights.
@Cynry
@Cynry 4 года назад
@@davidm9618 Ok, you don't seem very open on the topic, but let's try anyway :D Taichi "masters" are getting destroyed because they aren't master of shit. It's not even proper taichi most of the time, just deluded people. I'm not defending those at all, they are a disgrace and are only helping in killing the style. Those are people that at best, only ever practiced the soft side of taichi, and completely forgot about the hard side. So yeah, facing resistance, they aren't worth anything as fighters. About the self defense aspect, I disagree. No way they are selling this as a self defense class, and no way anyone serious about self defense is going there for that. It's entirely your projection calling it like that, which of course puts you in a position to be critical toward something you don't seem to understand. Because yes, if they were selling this as a self defense class, I would be very critical too :D The skills shown in the video are not meant to be applied directly, and they won't make you a fighter by themselves. But they are still part of the ABC of taichi, and are fundamental to the practice. You may have read in my comment, "skills" as in a jab, a cross or something like that, which are direct fighting skills. The ones in taichi are lower level of abstractions, it's about power generation in general (think balance, coordination, that kind of things). So, for me, for exemple, I can't jab without using these skills, it's automatic at this point. But without the jab part, they wouldn't be fighting skills. That's what internal arts are about to me, and it's pointless to look at them the same way you'd look at boxing, which you seem to be doing by trying to imagine how what you see in the video would fare in a fight. I'll probably end up making videos about it, but I've tested my skills in real life situation a few times. Went to an MMA class, having done no actual fight training, and I surprised people a few times, teacher included, in all range of fighting, from kicks to the ground. In DA STREEETZ, I was described as "effective"... Soo yeah. I'd suggest opening up your mind a bit, but that's on you. I completely understand how it seems like BS, because let's be honest, most of what we see about taichi is BS, but the art itself is very much fine and does what it promises.
@davidm9618
@davidm9618 4 года назад
@@Cynry I don't need to be "open" to something for which evidence has demonstrated it to be nonsense. There is also no evidence that chi exists. Show me a real chi master fighting an MMA or BJJ or anyone else that has skills who won. Just one.
@davidm9618
@davidm9618 4 года назад
@@Cynry And you don't seem to realize that they ARE selling this nonsense as self defense - whatever speed it is performed at is irrelevant. In the street, tai chi is begging for an ass-kicking unless a tai chi practitioner is fighting weak drunks or little girls. In the streets you can never be at a high level of effectiveness with tough opponents without a lot of practice in the ring - using real martial arts, not 'spirit / chi ' energy bullshit. I have over 30 years experience in real martial arts and in my day never lost a street fight because those on the street are 99% of the time ineffective fighters (the 1% reserved for Tank Abbott who'd get drunk and pick street fights - I watched a few of them in person).
