When reading The Thing and The Thing Itself, I would recommend also reading the short story by Peter Watts called The Things. It's on the Clarkesworld magazine website (free). It adds a great new perspective to both.

WOW! What an amazing interview and I will for sure look into Adam Roberts work now. The SF stuff as well as the historical novels and his non-fiction work. And thank you, Jon, for the editing - it would´ve allowed me to watch it piece by piece. However I was so hooked that I watched it all through.

I first met Adam in 1975. We were both 10 years old and in the same class at school. The one thing that seldom comes across about him is how incredibly quick witted and funny he is, even back then. However, he needs to shave off the moustache. He looks a bit like Miss Grove, the teacher from Class 10.

Outstanding interview and discussion! Just about the only positive thing that came as a result of the COVID shut down was my discovery of book tubers like you and a few others. I have read very little Science Fiction over the past 25 years and this program shows me what I have been missing. Again, very fine interview with Adam Roberts!

That was a pleasant surprise. I have read 'Snow' which started off really great. I have a Thing' about ice and snow (see what I did there). I found the second half of Snow not as enjoyable as the first half. The interrogation sequence didn't do it for me and as a result I have never bothered to pick up anymore of his work. Add to that, the length of the video and I didn't think I would get very far through this.... well... Today I have been building bookcases so I thought I would stick it on in the background but found myself getting more into this than I expected and sat and watched most of it, abandoning the important bookcase building task. I did wonder in parts who was actually interviewing who! Summary- will need to locate a couple more and invest some more time to him, after giving us few, some of his precious time it only seems right. I hope his new book sells really well and he can afford a bulb for his study (I also have a thing about lighting as you know Jon). Andy
@SciFiScavenger
@SciFiScavenger 14 дней назад
Hi Andy! Yes, i did feel a little smug about my lighting being much better than his. 💡💡💡 I'm really pleased you found it interesting enough to distract you from the important business of shelf building! As i was editing it I did feel it felt more like a chat than an interview, which is much preferable I think. More by luck than judgment. I've read a few of his books now (not The Snow, yet) and each has its merits. They are all interesting, for sure. Thanks for watching 👀!

@@SciFiScavenger Thanks to Interzone I was in at the beginning, so it was Salt and On. I quite liked Salt, but On didn't convince. It's too long ago to remember why.

ON did suffer from an overlong middle section then ended really abruptly. I'd recommend Land of the Headless, and I gather By Light Alone and Jack Glass are v good. 👌

Without YT creators like you, Jon, and many others in this genre who have YT channels (and we know and love them all) a talented writer such as Adam would have only the exposure provided by his publishers(s). I feel these interviews, although a bit long and hard for most enthusiasts to find time for the whole thing, are important insofar as they offer an added layer of exposure for the authors, compliments of you and your peer's efforts and time spent doing so. It's not the most "views-rewarding" thing to do, but it is a selfless and conscientious thing to do.
@SciFiScavenger

Cheers Rick, thanks for watching 👀! I confess it's partly selfish, it's just fun for me to speak to the author. I doubt very much they get much additional publicity out of it via my channel.

Priest's Ballard biography is being completed by Nina Allan, his wife. Chris wrote at least 50,000 plus words of the book, quite a bit of this while he was ill in hospital. I'm glad that more people seem to be getting into Adam's work at last. Nice work, Jon.
