It's an emotional day for Adam Savage as he comes face to face with Neil Armstrong's A7-L pressure suit, then learns about its long, delicate conservation process from National Air and Space Museum's Objects Conservator, Lisa Young. Come out to Huntsville and check out the Space and Rocket Center. We have an SR-71 Blackbird as a lawn ornament. And the Saturn 5 rocket is a city spanning camera for the local weather station.

My dearly departed fiancée and I used to go to DC every year to see Cirque du Soleil. One year we spent the day at the Smithsonian and I showed her the filming model of Star Trek’s USS Enterprise. I timed it so we’d get there just as it lit up. But I gave her the whole tour, how it was made, how it was filmed, how it was restored, all these useless trivia facts that were filled in my Trekkie brain. I guess I kind of gave off that same enthusiastic vibe Adam usually gives because I realized I drew an audience! I even surprised the volunteer there who is usually the one to answer questions 😂

We've developed clothing to the point that we can survive in the vacuum of space; Something we may take for granted now since technology is exponentially advancing with every new day, but pretty remarkable nonetheless.

He’s a child with adult money, I think as long as you preserve your curiosity and true almost otherworldly wonder you can really enjoy something this fantastic. I did my college essay on Adams life, and his ability to be a jack of all trades, he’s just the embodiment of curiosity and wonder fueled by his love of science and engineering, I believe this man can do anything he sets his mind to.

I was just about to say the same thing! I was hoping to see some of the internals and perhaps some images of the "original" pre-restoration/conservation suit. It is nutty to me that the conservation took years and materials science along with 3D printing to get it back to this stable state.

The tape was rewound and used again for another mission because they were so expensive at that time. Cheap bastards should have spent more money and bought more tapes! I’m wondering if anyone even thought of the recording as something special!

@@dflo4165Tape reels had just numbers (listed in a notebook somewhere else), not names. So the likely dropped it in a box of tapes to be reused and nobody cared what was on it. The first seasons of Doctor Who even got intentionally deleted, because BBC considered itself a theater of performance art, not creators of lasting art objects, and they even had to pay fines for repeating the same TV shows multiple times and thus erased and reused the expensive video tapes.

My degree and career being in science, aviation, space, and military, I can assure your little brain that spaceflight and moon landings are quite possible. You might want to read up on how this is done before asking an astronaut if he’s a liar. That would not turn out well for you.

@@joesmith389 the reason why I said that is because shortly after the the moon landing, Buzz Aldrin was out drinking, and while he was very inebriated, he was asking his fellow bar patrons "did we really land on the moon" and he seemed very very upset. This was reported and and confirmed by more than just one person, basically all the patrons at the bar he was in heard him say this. Now, as it's to my opinion of the lunar landings, I really don't have one either way, my position is if we went then cool, and if we didn't cool.

Rob Leaff sorry, didn’t mean to be that harsh, but yes lunar landings did occur. There is refractory equipment that was installed on the moon (which is still useable from earth), and almost 10,000 pictures of it during and after landing (later missions photographed). Just because you weren’t physically there doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. That’s no argument to facts.

There are two major things that inspired a fantastic change in my life probably about 8 years ago; those two things are Adam Savage, and the history of the Apollo era (primarily Apollo 11). It is absolutely wonderful to see these two inspirations meet in one video! Adam, I don't know if you'll ever see this, but thank you for inspiring a life change. Also a big thanks to the people who made Apollo 11 possible and those who preserve it.

Technically it wasn't one step because the last rung in the ladder was too high to lower one foot , he had to jump down with both feet but i'm sure he would have taken one step soon after :-)

Thanks for all you do Adam. I was stationed at Bolling AFB, DC from 1985 to 1988. I spent at least 1 day of every weekend going through the museums of the Smithsonian. I spent most of my time at the NASM. I can honestly say that for as much time I spent exploring the Smithsonian, I still did not see everything I wanted to. I wish this suit had been there. I would love to have seen it. I guess it's time to plan a vacation to Washington. A lot has changed over the years. I did see Enterprise when it arrived and made a couple of trips around the beltway. It passed right over the base.

Amazing! Very well done. A bit disappointed that they decided to use the "wrong" quote for the exhibit. They really should have used "That's one small step for a man..." "The 'a' was intended," Armstrong said. "I thought I said it. I can't hear it when I listen on the radio reception here on Earth, so I'll be happy if you just put it in parentheses." While it seems no one could really hear the "a," some research backs Armstrong. In 2006, a computer analysis of sound waves found evidence that Armstrong said what he said he said. NASA has also stood by the moonwalker.

Nice piece. Adam pulls it off so well because he's so technically fluent. One thing I never understood was this: Was the basic pressure suit the same one used on the moon? Or was there a seperate EVA suit?

No, as I understand it, the same A7-L Block II suit was used for both launch and EVA activities, with the PLSS added for EVA use.

The Story behind the making of the spacesuit is unbelievable,never mind putting a man on the moon,the spacesuit itself was a major achievement.One of the recent 50th Anniversery doco's detailed the story behind the suit itself,no suit you have no moon walk,the materials they used in its design were revolutionary.....And who got the Contract to manfacture the Spacesuit you wonder,cross you't heart it was The Playtex Bra People.
