Welcome to the 30,000-square-foot nonprofit Ponyride, which houses a diverse group of artists, entrepreneurs and makers who are united in their social mission to improve the city of Detroit. (And if you're wondering about the name Ponyride, it's explained at the very end of this video, and it's a sentiment Adam certainly relates to.)
This series and tour is made possible by The Fab Foundation
(www.fabfoundati...) and Chevron (www.chevron.com/).
Produced by Kristen Lomasney
Shot by Burke Doeren and Tyson Call
Edited by Thomas Crenshaw

Is it just me or is the audio really unbalanced? The title card was insanely loud compared to the video volume.

I thought my speakers were broken. As other videos were fine. Yet I shake my head on the audio quality these days. Better off just have no audio and text. Like the old days. As video quality is improving but audio not so much.

I've been watching a lot of these maker tour videos the past few days, and I always love the look people have on their faces when they see Adam and are talking to him. All so very star-struck for sure, and just filled with admiration.. all the while he is looking back at them with just as much admiration. I love it!

As a Detroiter, I appreciate this exposure greatly. I love seeing Adam taking the time to explore, making known the efforts the impassioned put forth to improve our city. Thank you for making me aware of such a wonderful space. It would be a dream to join them someday.

I love to see these maker tours - they are so inspiring, and so is Adam Savage. I keep being amazed about the details he sees (like all the holes in the table) and his enthusiasm towards the makers. I love to meet him one day and give him a big hug as a thank you for inspiring a lot of people to get started or keep doing what they do.

I had no idea a place like this existed near me in Detroit, this is awesome! I was just wondering with all the maker spaces around how we missed this opportunity here in the D. The gap made me want to start up a space but seeing this makes me want to leave the corporate 9-5 and go help these folks grow this maker space. Keep up the maker tour, its really inspiring stuff!

15:00 Clayton makes a really good point, there are a lot of laws in the EU about recycling building materials, but the US still just throws most of it away, it's a crazy amount of waste.
@ikmnification5737
@ikmnification5737 7 лет назад
In America we have the space and money to be wasteful. The amount of land we have to put our trash is more cost effective than sorting it for reuse and we have the finances to just buy new materials. Even what people think is being recycled sometimes don't have buyers and end up in a landfill.

Hey Adam (& tested crew!), you mention a large number of holes in the wooden work table that SmithShop has and their unknown origin. It looks exactly like the holes I accidentally put in my wooden cutting board when I used a 4mm hollow punch to put some holes in a material I laid on top of it. Maybe the previous owner did alot of leather work? Anyway, thanks for the content and I hope this helps solve the mystery!

Adam, or some who knows how to properly request something to test, if this hasn't been done already, can you we get an episode on the Perpetual motion wheel, and whether or not it is effectively possible. It does not need to produce infinite power, it just need to be capable of running for extended periods of time.

wow. so despite someone directly telling the project manager of the homeless coat "its a band-aid, not a solution" they still pressed ahead with it, though I will give them credit, $100 for that is definitely getting your sponsorship worth.
@stevermonkeh
@stevermonkeh 7 лет назад
Sorry I’m 3 weeks late to this, but I think you missed the point. The initial product was just as a side project by a college student and that comment was the inspiration to turn it into a non-profit. There would be no jobs to offer without a product. I agree that $100 sounds steep though. I hope that’s because they pay the employees well.
@stevencheung9753
@stevencheung9753 6 лет назад
I think it was meant to be like the Chinese proverb "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." The person didn't want to just take charity (money or object) because the problem of poverty will still be there in the short or long term. They want to get out of their situation for the long term. The $100 is steep, but it's an overall donation, I assume the donors know that the $100 is going towards funding a lot more than the production of the jacket. The girl mentioned a lot of social work within the community (GED programs, etc). All of that take money.
@martyjehovah

Despite the fact that permanent solutions are better than temporary fixes, the real world is a complex place and will always have a need for band-aids.
@CorwynGC
@CorwynGC 6 лет назад
They didn't 'press ahead with it'. They changed the program to provid BOTH the band-aid AND the solution. They person who said that got a coat and a job.
