What an amazingly inspirational and intelligent man, rarely have I heard someone with such practical engineering insight have the same, if not more, insight into the realities of society and how it can be aided. This man needs to do a TED talk

When i worked in the mines in Northern Western Australia, we lived in rooms like these. They're called "Donga". They where made out of shipping containers and there where 3 rooms per contaner. The only difference is, we had separate bathroom with a toilet, shower and basin. We had a desk with storage and a king single bed. It wasn't bad at all.

this is like DIY IKEA build your own house. except without all the small wooden pegs to get lost everywhere, and with obvious physical instructions already in the building material, it basically guides its own construction! brilliant! this is gonna be super useful for disasters such as after hurricanes, to house people for 3-6 months while they clean up and fix their larger houses and businesses.

For those who don't think they could ever live in a "micro" house, you should see one in person. You'd be amazed at what you can get used to (and even like!). I'm building a test structure in my back yard that is 13 feet by 13 feet by 13 feet, with two levels, and there is PLENTY of space for two people to live there. Probably even three if one of them is a child.

It's not, but this is a prototype. If this goes to production they can use a machine to notch the top and bottom of the studs at the sawmill. It's a amazing what can be done with a 4 head planer.

Put the CNC on a trailer so that contractors can use it to quickly make walls. Fit it with an auto loader and off feed table and you would have a sure seller. The mortis and tenon design makes for a very strong wall. Programming, low cost and UI would be paramount.

This is amazing and I love how accessible it is making tiny/small house construction. As a person who would be interested in living in a small house, but having no idea how to approach building my own...this is awesome! It also makes me wonder, with this approach of putting registration marks on the difference pieces, will we see places like Ikea selling things like these? (obviously we'd have to see a lot of legal stuff change that makes it easier for people to find places to live in these.)

@xaytana
@xaytana 6 лет назад
If you can make it to where it's easy to build the entire structure, not just the individual pieces, and you find a way to basically flat-pack it; this would be great for disaster relief. Ship small flat-pack temporary homes, and you could easily have a neighborhood on a truck, maybe even enough for a small community. I know FEMA has trailers, I went though a nasty tornado back in 2011, but the deployment honestly isn't that fast and a ton of people end up in hotels for weeks, but flat-packing enough buildings for a small community could vastly increase the speed of disaster relief, since all you have to do is piece together the structure and screw it together. It would also cut down on costs, as FEMA uses literal trailer homes, and this could be flat packed, just the savings in fuel for the trucks would be enough to provide a vast amount of additional homes. This would be even better if there was a way to knock down the home and put it back in a flat-pack format after disaster relief, with a quick inspection, then use it for the next disaster. I also like the idea of making the structure an easy puzzle; piece together a few things, then screw, and you're done. This would work well for people who want to build a cheap home, since time is money, and building structures takes a lot of time in measuring and cutting and assembling; making this the Ikea of houses would cut down on the price a lot. Hell, I might even implement this idea the next time I go out and build something, even if its just a shed. Though I do have ideas for improvement if you scale this to production. One is automated assembling, especially for the frames; it might not take long for a trio to piece one frame together, but labor time for that trio and the amount of tools and accessories needed would grow rapidly when you scale it for production. Another one is getting a stronger spindle with a longer bit, so you could at least double the production on the 2x4s, and sheet good portions could be knocked out quickly when you layer the sheets.

Not meaning to minimize the technical challenges this entails but we have the technology to do such constructions for a couple of decades. I think the toughest thing to crack, as he also mentions, are birocratic hurdles but also social norms and an efficient way to put a lot of these in a place. Because a single unit here an there does not solve a lot of problems. This then causes policing problems and neighborhood problems. Maybe with a good technical design they can bring the price down so much that they can fail at tackling some of those tough social problems without jeopardize the project. Besides, you have to have these thing in place for the eventual problems to manifest and be able to start solving them.
