My woodshop teacher never bought new sandpaper. Every year used the same tattered, uselessly weathered sandpaper from at least 2 years prior. It was so bad in fact that it would take us at least 2/3rds of our total time working on a given project to sand and finish it. Made me hate working with wood all through high school. The kids in that woodshop class are probably still using the sandpaper I used my freshman year.

It's kinda weird/interesting going back to some of these older build videos and seeing how much Adam's shop has evolved over the years

9:47 This is such a good point. I love when Adam waxes about capturing characters and gestures. That's something that many engineers lack and part of what makes him an artist as well as a designer.

I love watching Tested. It's just like watching cooking tv shows: You're learning a lot of techniques that you won't ever use.

this is stupid but one of my favorite parts of this video is at the very beginning where Adam was able to accept that he had made a calculation mistake and say "Thank you" to the correction. Seeing how smart each and every person is on this show I am sure that it takes quite the drop in pride to admit that a mistake has been made. But I want you to know that it was observed and appreciated.

Adam savage is a genius!!!! Used to watch Mythbusters avidly and then recently discovered a whole wealth of things to watch via Tested on RU-vid. Love watching Adam at work, his skill, practicality, enthusiasm and generally a truly talented man. Love winding down before bed with a one day build vid, keep them coming!!!!!

It is quite funky to watch so experienced people doing precise measures with... Foot and inches hahaha

Watching you work Adam I have to remind myself you are actually a celebrity. You are like the crazy cat next door that has the neighbors worried. Using the jigsaw to cut the center out of the eyelets while holding it in your hand is crazy. I do that same stuff all the time and have cut myself on bandsaws, jigsaws, and even a wood jointer got ahold of a finger. But it's faster to just go for it sometimes. I have watched you over the years in your various endeavors and have developed a lot of respect for your work. It's fast paced mayhem that in the end is freakin amazing. Thanks for sharing!

Just recently got into watching these videos and love watching the amount of work and skill Adam puts into these things. He just seems not into this build as the other ones I've watched. The fact he forgot the trigger just proves the point. In other builds he keeps getting more excited the closer he gets to the end. In this he just seems to want it over with.

I love watching Barbarella a great one off, and I've enjoyed watching this video it is one hell of a build to make that iconic gun, it was a pleasure to see you at work and in your element putting this piece together. Also that you made it up as you worked through, not an easy job and basically winging it. I would love to have an awesome work shop that you have. I myself, love model making even though I've not done a lot, it's a hobby really, though I would love to do as a job instead of stacking shelves at a supermarket. I don't have a lot of money and do everything in my small bedsit in the UK. I challenged myself to build something big. I've collected a lot of materials, mostly cardboard, cardboard inner tubes, and basically a lot of cardboard, and a lot foam core and PVA. I've been building a space-station, mushroom and industrial in appearance, with a large saucer section. It stands about five foot four, almost taller than me. Now I decided to make it even tougher by adding LED lights to bring it to life. These LED's are the battery powered type you get at Christmas and I've lost count how many I've put inside and out. It's also been an enterprising effort to hide the battery packs, some are internal others are external, with removable panels to access the switches. My dad did tell me I could have put them all on one circuit and power them through the mains but my knowledge of electronics is limited and besides it has been a fun brain teaser. The build is getting there, right now I'm adding external features, textures before rendering. It has taken me about 2 years to get to this point. Adam, you are an inspiration, love watching your channel, lots of interesting builds, challenges, show visits and tours behind the scenes of the many movie workshops that span the world. Awesome stuff.

Nice trick I learned when making my electric guitar. Clamp a cheap plastic bristle dollar store brush to your table (or in a vice). When the pores of your paper get clogged: smack the paper against it in a brushing motion. You get a lot more use out of each page of paper before it's too clogged to be effective. Works best if your using rubber sanding blocks, something about the way the rubber bounces off the plastic brush clear the paper really easily.

I just stumbled upon this great video, and never realized what a true craftsman Adam Savage is. Well done and very informative.

My late grandfather, an accomplished wood craftsman and artist would have LOVED this episode...

I love how quickly you make things work and how creative you are. I do, however, worry about some of the risks you take by trying to be fast. This video shows that allot of dust was produced and NOWHERE in this video are you seen were respiratory protection.

Broke every health and safety rule in the book. For this, I love this build and video. I doff my cap to you.

This would be a great piece to revisit all these years later. I would love to see it redone/remade with Adam’s love for coloring and weathering.

I just noticed, Adam is doing a lot of work with his tongue ;) I really like what he's doing. Sometimes I even think: "I could do this too" at least when it is a build where he doesn't use too many of those fancy tools he collected over the years. Oh, Adam forgot the trigger :D

Beautiful...but I don't know why it bothers me so much there's still that little 3/32 gap at the top-rear of the barrel, where it meets the stock. Seems like he could have milled the barrel recess just a LITTLE deeper during the final fit. Eh...everybody's a critic, right?

I'm really loving these One Day Build videos. It's the best part of what I loved about Mythbusters, the construction of the pieces. I don't know if you (or anyone) will read this comment, given that it's on a video so far removed from it's launch date, but if so, might I suggest a flash of a time code in the corner of the video every once in awhile, to give us, the viewer, an estimate of what time you've arrived at. For example, after cutting the wood to get the basic shape of the Barbarella rifle, how long it took you to get to that point. Other than this, there's no complaints. I miss seeing you on Mythbusters, but this is better in some aspects. All the construct and building, with explanations and theories behind the conclusions and (thankfully) nothing getting blown up. Kudos to you all!!

Great job once again! And thank you I really pick up certain techniques that sometimes I just don't think about.

You guys didn't take into account her added height, due to heels, or the perspective of the photo. The gun is in front of her by a few inches and the camera is slightly lower than the tip of the barrel which would make it a tad taller the height of her eyes (plus the heels).

I like these vids more than Mythbusters, to be honest. I'm a designer and creator myself, so this does more for me than the gimmicks of the show.

I was a huge Mythbusters fan, I've watched every episode at least 3 times. Bought most of every season. Just recently found out about this channel. I'll be binge watching every episode. Your personality is great. You're a very intelligent somewhat weird guy but very entertaining. Keep up the great work. I'm from Indiana

You previously mentioned the importance of good lighting. I'd say don't forget the importance of breathable air. A good ventilation over places with dust, smoke and vapor will keep you mind and eyes in good shape. There are overhead types that you can move above your head as you move around the shop.

You will ride eternal, shiny and chrome!

I saw Barberella at the theater when it came out in 1968. I went by myself and I was 11. It was rated X (which neither my parents or I knew) and I still don’t know why they let me in. Changed my life.

Adam's 1-day builds = week of head scratching and procrastination for me.. Mythbusters was an awesome show, but this channel definitely is alot more detailed with the steps needed to build, and having Adam give little pro tips are very helpful..

Funny how Mythbusters portrays Adam as the borderline incompetent one when in reality he is so insanely skilled.

I'm here from the future (2023) and I am fascinated by the difference in Adam between then and now. With Norm in the cave he is a completely different person - no shouting, no "I LOVE IT" at the top of his voice, no strange accents, no whistling, and no drumming. He is SO MUCH calmer, quieter and is much more informative. He imparts information to US by explaining it to Norm (who doesn't need the explanation!)

That was really cool, All through that I got thinking it would be so cool to see Adam have a medieval weapons build off with Tod Cutler of Tod's Workshop.

What a cool dad this guy must be.

Hi Adam, I really admire your work, the confidence you have. built on years of experience is breathtaking!. But, I do worry about your exposure to dust and contaminates. Even though the board you're using doesn't contain formaldehyde, the raw dust can collect in the lungs to form a claggy mucus that can solidify over years and cause breathing problems. I do understand the creative urge and even I get carried away occasionally, only later to realise I haven't used a mask. I'm nagging cos' I care. I love the one day builds where Adam just kinda does his thing quietly but explaining each step instead of norm constantly asking questions and trying to dumb down everything, I mean I understand why he does, but it’s just a lot better being able to just listen to the shop noises and whatnot

I already built a few fake guns, but none with such curvy stock! GG Adam!!! The use of such soft material for it made it more easy to carve out. Personally, if keeping for myself, i'd painted it glossy black, it just looked more epic with its satin black primer... even if not accurate. Great job! :)

I watch so many of your videos , but when I saw this one- the first thing I thought of was - rip van winkles rifle from hellsing ova. It too is a very big rifle but if I’m correct it’s a musket rifle. I’d love to see that one done. Thank you for all you do, I love your videos.

I love the new format a lot more. Just Adam. Its such a better format.

What I do to scale prop photos, where almost all of them are digital, is that I load them into The GIMP (a free Photoshop-like program), use the measurement tool to find the number of pixels for a known measurement (such as Jane Fonda's height, in this case), use those to calculate the DPI and then set the DPI of the image in the Scale dialogue. Then I change the measurement tool's unit from pixels to millimetres (or whatever) and just measure away. I use The GIMP because I am a Linux user, but I am sure that similar capabilities should be available in Photoshop or PaintShop Pro or whatever you use.

i like these videos man, lots of it is just you getting on doing shit - you don;t need to explain I'm now measuring x or cutting y. It's relaxing compared to other diy style channels. Never seen your channel before but I've been watching all night. Nice one dude
