Just in time for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, Adam speed builds the beautiful LEGO lunar lander set that was developed in cooperation with NASA! From moon craters to laser reflector panels, Adam is super impressed by the detail infused in this model. Now a question which shelf does it belong on: with space stuff or LEGO builds?

I am all for knolling Lego, but you have to go in phases with the newest sets. They label the bags in the order they are needed, so knolling everything at once actually might make the process longer.
@tzxazrael
@tzxazrael 5 лет назад
probably not. i mean if it takes X,Y,Z,A,B,C to knoll each bag individually, it probably takes X +Y +Z +A +B +C to knoll them all at once. the real drawbacks to knolling it all at once are... 1; all the time is front-loaded, so while the total time is the same, it FEELS a lot longer until you can start building.. and 2; especially for larger and more complicated sets, you will need a LOT more space to knoll it all out in (lol i was starting to wonder if Adam was going to run out of pieces or table first!)
@hamyncheese

@@tzxazrael problem is part selection - you have a massive array of pieces if you do it all at once and it will take much longer to find the piece you want than if you had done it bag by bag - the numbered bag system was a huge step up for lego - frankly for smaller kits like this it almost makes knolling unnecessary
@PorkYoSelf
@PorkYoSelf 5 лет назад
@@tzxazrael to a certain degree Lego is a "however you feel like" type of project. But when they provide all of the parts for a certain stage of the build in a single bag it is kinda forcing your hand. If you watch the timelapse, Adam is mostly working left to right. Not because he planned it that way, but because he knolled stage 1 of the build on the left side of the table. I am not concerned about the knolling time, but the efficiency. Since stages 1 and 2 do not have any overlap and won't be needed at the same time, it is kinda similar to knolling the Lego set you are building with the foreign coins collection you have.

That anekdote about the rolo wrappers is THE REASON I flock to this channel. The builds and everything else is just the cherry on top for me. But the main course will always be Adam, gleefully recounting a moment in his life. A behind the scenes look into Adam's thought process. But my favorite thing is that he will be in absolute awe, and bliss from something so small. He literally gushed about glue(might have been resin) on a shelf while at WETA.(Turns out his favorite adhesive/resin? is made by WETA) "Dude, you're your 10 year old self's fucking hero" Mrs. Savage Couldn't have put it better myself.

It seems like you should do the knolling thing bag by bag, since they pre-sort them into stages of the build now... I think the mega-knolling might actually impede your build by un-grouping things that are going to be needed together...
@ronwingrove683
@ronwingrove683 5 лет назад
I was actually thinking that myself. I didn't realise it had a name until Adam did a video on it, but I've been helping my girls build their Lego kits for years, and we knoll (is that the right word?) bag-by-bag. The bags are numbered, and match up with the instructions and order of build. Not only is unbagging and sorting everything in one block a massive time-sink but, as you say, it's also counterproductive.
@tzxazrael
@tzxazrael 5 лет назад
@@ronwingrove683 i think that's a false assumption. it probably takes about the same amount of time to knoll all of it at once as it does to knoll each bag individually. it just FEELS a lot longer, because you spend all of that time in one front-loaded block, instead of stopping in various spots to switch to building. i think the only real factor between fully knolling the kit, or knolling it bag-by-bag is an issue of how much surface area you have to knoll in, compared to the size and complexity of the kit. eg; i think even Adam would have to admit that knolling something like an entire Star Wars Star Destroyer kit would just require too much surface area for too long.
@TheGreg9722
@TheGreg9722 5 лет назад
Except with the newer kits, the bags are numbered so that the first stage of the build requires the first bag, and so on. Knolling all the bags together means that you no longer have this organization, so on average it takes longer to hunt down a piece, making the build time longer. Not that I have an issue with people knolling, they’re free to do what they want and it does look nice.
@limealemur
@limealemur 5 лет назад
true, but I’m sure Adam is fully aware of this and he knolls the packages from left to right so they’re still organized by bag. Probably still more efficient to do it one bag at a time but I doubt he’s searching the whole pile each time he’s looking for a piece. He knows where to look.

I've never "knolled" in my life and never intend to. Lego paid to put numbers on their bags so no one else could, so why ruin it by just emptying everything out and spending a lifetime sorting all the parts out into sets? When the instructions say use bag number 1, I like to open the number 1 bag, look for the parts I need and then put them together. Simples. No "knolling" required. But, everyone is different, so all the more power to them.

If you don't have to constantly move pieces of what your building or keep looking for your next piece in a pile of parts, you can work faster overall. @@andysmith1996 I'd have to look at the Space Cowboy's footage again to see what they did i.e. How much they needed lol I agree "Time to flatten out" BUT if it has the look you are going for at the scale you need then that's a no brainer. On "Space projects" at EMI, Pinewood and Shepperton for 1:1 scale stuff we used (back in the day) gold coated Mylar tape from 3M. For a scale model like what Adam Savage is going on about having a convincing looking "Crinkle" at scale could be key plus problems with metamerism with a film/camera test. I gotta admit that a "Rollo" wrapper has a particular deep coppery gold color which hard to achieve any other way apart from gold leaf alloyed with copper. I wonder how much Cadbury's would have charged for a production roll of the Rollo wrapper paper, probably many thousands of pounds/ dollars. It probably comes on a roll 16 ft wide by 3 feet tall and costs $15K ;-) x 3 for "Film company" that's nearly $50K of too much Rollo wrappers + shipping to the USA from the UK.

Am I the only one that appreciates the idea behind knolling and respects the neatness and organization of it, yet at the same time does not practice the process themselves when building Legos? I've tried this before. But I've found the process to be much faster and more satisfying if you just go bag by bag as they're needed. I was fortunate enough back in December to win the SECOND EVER LARGEST Lego set that they've ever put out, and just to happened to be from my devoted franchise, Harry Potter. Massive Potterhead and I got the over 6000 piece Hogwarts Castle gifted to me by the amazing Super Carlin Brothers. Now had I practiced knolling on THAT set, it would have been absolute torture in the ninth realm of Avernus (Hell, for those who don't play D&D). That Lego build was the most enjoyable build I've ever experienced. I'm actually contemplating tearing it apart and rebuilding it.
@antagonizerr

Knolling should be limited to parts bags per section. Some parts look so close in design, they're easily confused. Best to organize in stages Adam. Try ceramic tipped tweezers, btw. Non conductive for electronics and decals don't stick to them as much.

Just built the Saturn V and used 'Noeling'. :) I found it good to work packet by packet rather than opening them all at the beginning. And I noticed that if there are sub-packets (little bags within a numbered bag) generally a part from said sub-packet is required on page one.

Adam! I've recently put together a number of large lego builds and I found it much faster to only open the bag (and knoll) the instructions call for instead of opening all the bags at once. That way it's faster to find the piece you are looking for since you are looking through a smaller number of pieces. I noticed you opened all the bags at the beginning. Did you keep the pieces of each bag near each other or just keep the colors and sizes together (but mixed with other bags)?
@RGudmetalhead
@RGudmetalhead 5 лет назад
It's not only faster it also takes much less space, so even if you have a huge table that's a benefit because you can space groups apart and it also improves search speed. I prefer that method as well.

Adam did the same thing I did as a LEGO builder who's experience was before numbered bags existed. Opened them all. Modern LEGO sets have numbered bags based on where in the build you are, so you don't need to have all the parts out at once. Hopefully next time he'll get to take advantage of that, it makes things so much easier.

Why'd you open all the bags at the same time D: The bags labeled 1 will be first in the instructions, and no pieces in any other number bags will be used until bag 1 is finished, and so on. The most efficient way of building any set is to go by bag number. Knolling is great, but not if 80% of the pieces on the table won't be used yet 😐
