Adam embarks on his first full prop replica project using his shop's new Form 3L 3D printer: a replica of the Amban "tuning fork" blaster as seen in The Mandalorian! It's an extensive build that's also mixed-material, combining 3D printed resin parts with carved wood and machined components as well, giving it a veracity not only in form but also weight and feel--as if it lives in the Star Wars universe. It's an essential prop for Adam's Mandalorian cosplay, and stay tuned for the paint application in the next build!

@@schaddalton I mean, if he picks Venus, then he can spend like half a year or two thirds of a year on a One Day Build. It also depends on your definition of "day". Is it synodic day or sidereal day? Cause on Earth, that's a difference of about 4 minutes. But for Venus, it's a difference of like 127 days. Venus' synodic rotation period is 116 earth days, while it's sidereal is 243. Can get real tricky that way.

Adam a few things with 3D printing. The Formlabs software is pretty basic considering how expensive the printers are but other software like Chitubox and Lychee can actually hollow prints which will save resin but you have to add drain holes and cure the inside and outside of the print. If you leave the inside uncured it'll crack over time, sticking a couple of UV LEDs in the drain holes is the best way to cure the inside. Remove the supports right after you wash and before you cure, it makes life much easier with clean up because they'll normally pop off without doing any damage (providing your settings are dialled in), you can also use flush cutters to really make your processing work much easier as well. When sanding resin please for the love of god wear a mask or wet sand, this dust isn't something you want to breathe in, the particles are small enough to get stuck in the walls of your lungs and your body wont be able to expel them easily if at all. Not to mention all printer resin is damn toxic.

He is young enough that the distance and the difference between, say, hand drawn art and digital art are much less intimidating. I am an excellent artist, but i completely choked and hemmed and hawed, and absolutely HATED the product of my digital effort. Luckily, there was a young man that had gone to school with my son that was stoked to buy the setup that i had foolishly assumed would do as i insisted. I am no slouch on a pc: i can make visual music with prints of things i’ve drawn or painted and then enhanced or altered. And when i am bashing something out of a chunk of basalt with a hammer and chisel, there’s no keystroke on a keyboard that can replicate how the stone feels in hand. And thats cool. I can’t do math. But i can let a dragon out of a slab of granite.

Two things always really impressed me about Adam. 1) You ever notice almost all his major tools in the shop have his shorthand for how to use it taped on them or nearby (take a look at the back of the 3d printer during the close)? 2) Adam strikes me as a person who studies and researches how to use his tools but considering how meticulous he is about his measurements I am impressed he mastered the 3d software seemingly so quickly. Honestly, even just as a graphic designer and sometimes product designer, it's a real goal to be able to transition to those new goggles as he put so easily from project to project. Sidenote: Anyone reading this far who feels comfortable could you recommend some maker projects or niches (I'm not sure if there are any or if a niche is the right word) for a designer to dip his toes into?

Adam’s hair craziness scale is an excellent and usually reliable gauge for how awesome the end product is going to be.

Adam you should wear a mask when sanding Resin, it's really harmful for lungs ;). Awesome video as usual, I still love, after all those years, how enthusiastic you are ^^

Yeah, it really bothers me personally. I wish Adam would SHUT UP and just MAKE WHAT HE’S TOLD. He shouldn’t be allowed to speak.

Pro tip for threaded inserts in 3D prints. You can melt them right into place using a soldering iron. The heat on the metal insert will melt away the plastic for a perfect fit.

For anyone curious those "threaded inserts" are actually referred to as "Heli-Coil" there are other threaded inserts that are suited for wood specifically and they act more like one of those screw in drywall anchors.
@TrapperAaron
@TrapperAaron 3 года назад
Threaded inserts for wood usually are brass, have large coarse threads on outside and a machine screw thread on inside. Used where repeated disassembly of wood is needed, also the insert usually glued into the wood. Knurled threaded inserts are usually used in sheet metal and are either press fit into a hole or come as a pop rivet design. Again used for repeated disassembly. A helicoil is a thread repair device used in thick metal.

Nope, even it's a year ago. Helicoils are inserts for damaged threads.

That helicoil is not the preferred type of threaded insert to use in wood. There are flanged and unflanged tapping threaded inserts that are much better for wood, and have more holding/pull-out strength. Not super critical for this application, but it's good to be aware of what's out there.

Every build I do, I constantly think, "When am I going to stop making X mistake". After 9 layers of paint and 3 reprints, you get that fantastic looking final product. And nothing can quite beat that feeling. But it's nice to see it's always a learning process and we're always getting better at our craft even a professional such as yourself with many years in the business. And it's clear you love what you do.

1:19:29 all you need to do is draw lines through the ellipses at each station, and the centers are the dimension. If the length is correct, then you have accurate diameters as well (within less than 2 mm, based on that print's accuracy).
