Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Planer and Spindle Sander Station!

Adam's workshop organization project today involves creating a perfectly-fitted storage platform for his wood planer and orbital spindle sander. These are tools that are used infrequently in the shop, but still need to be easily accessed and stored--and Adam found the perfect place for them under his table saw. Additionally, Adam modifies his planer to work with his shop's dust collector by making a magnetically attached hose adapter!

In almost every one day build I've watched he specifically talks about the great casters he found on ebay like "single pin locking casters" that he buys 5 of to always have a spare. In the one build where he actually stands on the thing he made, no locking casters? Haha that's such an adam mistake. Switch them out, adam! Then again he does have a lot of experience on a one-wheel...

I'm not sure I'm so keen on all of the time-lapse stuff. I'm sure there are dozens of teaching moments that just get skipped on by and I also love to hear Adam's thinking as he progresses through a build. Sure it would make a longer video. but I'm sure I'm not the only one who enjoys seeing those longer-form videos during the one day builds.

Mr. Savage sir, one safety tip, please don't stand on rolling devices while taking off or putting on heavy items on said rolling device (or anywhere for that matter, at any time, for any reason), unless you lock it down in at least 2 opposite spots to keep it from rolling. None of us want to hear that you did so and then fell and hit your noggin on something, or broke a bone or worse... died. Household accidents are a leading cause of death remember? We love you and the work you do and want you to remain healthy for decades to come. (I should know about this sort of thing, for I hurt my own back on a fall from ground level and have been out of work for months due to that. I wasn't on a rolling device, but I know how bad things can get in a hurry because of an accident.) (edit: I should have seen all the other posts to the comment section about this if I had taken a moment to read them, l.o.l., but still the argument stands). (Also GOGGLES!, didn't you just make a video about that and why?)

@chriscmoor
@chriscmoor 3 года назад
At the risk of pointing out the painfully obvious, the best place to store the collector attachment is inside the void above the planer's cutter head assembly. Hanging it on the outside is just asking for it to get broken or damaged during movement or to scrape a shin in the most painful way possible. You can't run the planer without dropping the infeed and outfeed tables, so the attachment would be right in front of your any time you set up the tool for use. Oh, and to echo the other posters.... PLEASE put at least 2 and preferably 4 locking casters on the base. Every time you stepped on it I just kept thinking, "Hmmm... wonder what he'll use to patch that depressed skull fracture?"
@daanwilmer

A consideration for the drawer - make it L-shaped, deeper on the right side, so you can possibly put sanding drums upright in that section, fitting more in place (also allowing dividers to sort by size). Or even make it an inverted U shape around the spindle with deeper sections on both sides.

Great dust collection idea! Those magnets seems to really do the job well. I also really like the design of the cart, but I know that planer is heavy as heck, maybe one day you’ll do a one day build of some sort of a base with a jack or hydraulic lift under it. Never lift it again, it just goes up and down by itself. And now the top of the spindle sander drawer could act as a catch shelf for the material that’s fed through the planer and you could then also build a top and have another work top surface or drawer over the planer 😁

Regarding the “wheels before the cart” - I was once working on a workbench with a bunch of engineers, and we needed to fit a strange angle in one corner. They spent a half hour arguing over how to measure the angle exactly using math before I got sick of it, cut two square pieces, and struck a line where they met in the corner. Boom perfect fit before they even knew what was happening. This was a very long way to say I approve of your methods wholeheartedly. Every time I take the time to measure and math a problem out, things never fit right once assembled.

Very nice way to store your equipment. I've built several rolling cabinets as well, one for a scroll saw and dremel tool that uses a cable going to a pencil like component that you hold to use the device. Underneath for storage and other tools. One of the things I found to be useful was to build a break mechanism to stop the cart from moving when in use. Might be useful on a cart like the one you just made. My brake was underneath with a lever on the side that would lift the cart ever so slightly when activated.

That apron is legit! And I really need a milling machine... makes my router look unimpresive (not really but I love overkill)

Why not just attach a peace of flattbar to the side of the cart for those bad ass magnets to stick to? No swinging or faling off then🤔

A simple solution for the rolling is to roll a pair of wheels onto furniture coasters. (the round ones with a lip arount the edge.) Instant chocking of the wheels. Also I am surprised that Adam didn't just screw a washer to the side of the cart for a magnet in the planer dust collection adapter to latch on to.

We use a flip bench for our planer. It’s on a hinge. When I need the planer I lock the table with planer up. When I need the jointer I lock the table with the jointer up.

LOL there was a point there where Adam was describing fitting the extractor to the newly milled wood piece that he reminded me of Marvin the Martian from the old Bugs Bunny cartoons. Just waiting for him to say Illudium Q36 Explosive Space Modulator now.

Great cart system. I would suggest one additional modification to your rig: make a riser block that can be placed between the cart and the planer, to raise the level of the planer tables to align with the surface of your table saw. This would let you use the table saw as an outfeed table for your planer, making working on longer pieces of wood easier.

Love these builds, always great. That dust collector would be a perfect candidate for a 3D printed part.

3:00 I'm not an an engineer (more imagineer than anything), and I've only been using Fusion360 to design parts on my 3D printer for a few months, but I have to say, this comment made me feel SOOOO much better about those times things need just a bit more tolerance to move.

My guess is, that you would love the magnets that come out of hard-drives!!! I use them for a lot of things, super strong, most of them already have holes in the metal plate on which they are glued on!

Maybe in the future add some helper springs to help lift the heavy planer to its topside home, so you won’t throw out your back.

I have a similar planer. These planers are surprisingly heavy and Adam better be careful lifting it. I made my rolling cart with an 18' drum sander on the top and the planer on the bottom so I don't have to lift it. Great space saver for a very small shop.
