I don't even do much costuming but once I was able to afford real silk I became a horrible fabric snob. Linen is my favorite. But what was once fabric for the masses is now fairly expensive and the good stuff has to be shipped from Northern Europe. :(
@Tina06019

@@roxiepoe9586 That was just what I was going to write, but you beat me to it. Three years ago I culled out my fabric stash by getting rid of all synthetic fabrics; I tested questionable yardage by applying the flame of a Bic lighter to the edge of it. If it charred, it stayed. If it melted, I trashed it.

The day I walked into a fashion store and they wanted to charge me $200 for a white cotton shirt was the day I went to my grandmother and asked her to teach me to sew...and god bless her, she shone with joy and was my inspiration ... and so was the love of linen shirts that has never changed. I wear the minimum amount of synthetic I can get away with because Australia = Hot and fashionable I have never been. Comfort is my aim. Polyester is the devils skin and should be destroyed or repurposed. I'm sure it's good for ... something? I just bought 10m of sheer linen this week with no idea what it would be but now I may have an inspiration :-) Thank you and so nice to see you back.

Poor Marie Antoinette was damned if she did and damned if she didn't. It was traditional to blame the foreign spouse of the monarch as the source of all bad things (think Margaret of Anjou, Prince Albert, etc.), and Marie Antoinette was not politically savvy and did not know how to counter this. She certainly wasn't evil. And yes, polyester is the devil. (But not a 21st century invention.) But rayon can be wonderful: it is a manufactured fabric made of regenerated cellulose fibers from wood pulp. Of course, there is both good rayon and not-so-good rayon, and the process of making it can expose workers to dangerous chemicals if it is not carefully done. I prefer silk, of course, but cannot afford it most of the time.

subtropic lurker busting in- cotton is good if you're in a semi-arid climate where breathability is required for comfort. However, if you are from the tropics or subtropic you know very well that cotton absorbs a lot of water. Linen is much more better (lol grammar) in terms of breathability and summer wear. However, if you're in new york it should be fine.

At my last trip to joanns, I was trying to purchase a linen I could afford, I came upon a startling realization. Almost every fabric's fiber content was polyester! I am wee 17 year still discovering how the world works and seeing that really startled me. I pointed it out to my mom and she just nodded her head. The Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth has a small self portrait of/by Vigee le Brun. The first time I saw it, it reminded me of her, the queen, the revolution, and all things of that period. After I had read all that interested me in our small school library, the librarian would get books for me from the upper school. One of the first, and the first biography I fell in love with, was about Vigee le Brun. It was un-illustrated . The next time I was in the library, the wonderful librarian surprised me by having a book of paintings of Marie Antoinette by V le B. Lol if I were to recreate a modern queen chemise, I would have to shorten it. Lol 😅😅😅 simply because I can’t wear long dresses; I always eventually trip on the hem. Looking forward to seeing your modern interpretation~! 💖💖💖 and this is good as it should be compatible with Aussie summers

The Queen of France may have been able to wear gowns that were long enough to cover her feet on a daily basis, but for us common folk, ankle-length is as long as we can wear without it being far too impractical.

Thank you soooo much from one historical sewer to the other for telling people about how horrible polyester really is, a non-breathable plastic terror! And also mentioning how great natural fibres truly are and how longer lasting it is! 😂 crying tears of joy! Btw the Chemise à la Reine is my favourite piece from the 18th century and I am so happy to be watching your rendition of this dress design!! 😍 Excited to see the upcoming videos! I am as you say " positively trash" for your videos!😁

It is my habit to skip over the sponsoring segment, but, I find you so funny and charming I actually watch you talk about Squarespace. I hadn't even realized that I was acting contrary to my practice until I heard myself laughing. They are lucky to have you!

This is precisely the kind of dress for which I've been longing this summer.... light whimsy but without the spaghetti straps, polyester nightmare of the modern aesthetic. I can not wait to see the final result!

"Just because something is a new technological development doesn't mean that it's better" ME every day! I absolutely adore this project! I have been making my own "modern" chemises for like two years and LOVE the chemise gown and really want to make one with a bodice like yours. I usually do blue sashes but ahhhh I love it with a red sash too! Usually I keep the sleeves the same because I love puffs and just shorten the skirt but I like the short sleeves and long skirt too 😍 historically inspired clothes (esp 18th century) are my jam...

OOOOooooo.....I absolutely love the idea of a more modern version of this dress! I loved when English Heritage (I believe) historically recreated the Marie Antoinette portrait version in their "Stitch In Time" series, however; it had an abundance of poofy sleeves! I would think they could get quite in the way whilst one is picking flowers & such things (although they may be useful if you forgot your basket & went to pick apples 😉). I am eager to see how this takes shape & thoroughly intrigued as to what on earth @costumingdrama will be using a length of burgundy/wine "wooly worm" trim for! 🤔 Explain thyself Noelle! Beautiful drawing as usual Bernadette. I believe it is extremely belated that I join your Patreon & that I get myself to thine Etsy Shop to pick up past renderings which may still be available!! 🤗💜🦋
