Great video and really detailed. I'm starting to work on a two-handed backhand at the kitchen line, but didn't think about it for blocking like this. Dropping the paddle is so important, and many players struggle to do this on their backhand. Glad you were so specific in your instructions. Thanks!

Great pointing out of these shots for additional arsenals. These are my favorite returns when it comes to defending fast/smashed down returns . Stability on the legs, stability on your two handed grip to create a solid wall to dig-block the ground ball to push forward motion, timing and reading of ball's speed to utilize its momentum to bounce off of your paddle with control...normally use to defend and to reset. In addition to that, an optional shot that would save you in this position would be inbetween the legs trick shot with one hand grip, quick swing around the leg if ball bounces slightly passing between your legs...are for the advance players.

Yes, tweener is an option, but this is still better!

Blocking/resetting with 2 hands is something I am working on especially on the low ball between the legs or at the feet. I use both the 2 handed and 1 handed backhand for both drives and dinks so that helps but I also find that the 2 handed shot helps to train the off hand and has made a difference when I have to use the off hand by itself.

Tried this a bit when warming up before play today. I noticed that when up at the NVZ my shots with the 2 hands crossed the net, on average, lower than when hitting with one hand. Definitely going to explore this more. Thanks as always.

Great video; I’ve been using this technique for about 3 months after watching Riley Newman. It really helps when I first start a game and am nervous to stabilize my drop shots and not over hit them! It also helps deaden my blocks at the NVZ, however It does shorten my reach and that is when using one hand is best. Thanks Katrina is getting very good.

Thanks Jordan, I have been working on using two hands but come game time I go back to what seems easier. I had surgery on my right wrist years ago and it does not bend backwards. At about 2 minutes into the video, if I don’t have stability with one hand spin the paddle and use both hands. Just thought that was funny. Thanks again for the videos.

Awesome video!. Great rationale, progress and then technique(for returner and feeder) You mention stability and a wide stance so is it correct that you are guiding more with your arms than lifting with your legs? And therefore how does this differ from say a drop or regular dink?
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 2 года назад
Hey Ian, actually I’m lifting more from my shoulders, and my legs are pretty stable and not doing much. Having a wide solid base helps with the stability and getting low!

Hey, Jordan: I'm a much better pb player and coach for having found you and (your lovely wife!) Katrina's RU-vid videos a few short years ago. Yes, I'm still watching them with great interest, and I refer my pb friends and colleagues (at least the ones I LIKE!) to do the same. Of recent, I've been meeting with our local and very fast growing (!!) PB Club of over 700 members about the drilling and strategy sessions that we'll be teaching this summer. Your name and videos have come up a few times, and we're happy to have them available to add to our "resource" list. Many thanks for sharing your time, energy, effort and expertise with us!

I have found that because so many of the hard smashes come with top spin, I will block rotating the top edge of my paddle angled closer to the net than the bottom edge. When I aim for the tape of the net, this technique reduces deadly pop-ups. There's just so many pop-ups one is capable of returning.

That may be an option at times, although I don’t recommend switching hands routinely. For playing defense, two hands is better than one most of the time.

I wouldn’t suggest the whole hand, although if you try it, grab it with your left hand and maybe just try a couple of fingers on the paddle face instead.

Has anyone struggled with shoulder/neck pain after incorporating 2 handed backhands/2 handed forehands? I’m right handed & it’s my left that has pain. I looooove driving with 2 hands, but it is probably the culprit. I stretch etc but any tips would be appreciated. Maybe I’m overextending orrrr…? Thanks!
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 10 месяцев назад
Probably. I’ve never heard of pain due to a two hander. Most likely your stroke is very inefficient, and you are very tense and tight when you swing. You should feel very loose and relaxed.

@jimkazmarek5302

Jordan. Top hand, bottom hand responsibilities is a baseball hitting terminology. With 2 hands when you want to power thru a ball and turn on it the bottom hand "pulls" the ball.

The bullseye design on your paddle not being centered left to right is triggering me lol On a side note, I can’t seem to find a single time or position where having two hands on these little handles is comfortable and it seems to slow my hands down and touch and accuracy drops tremendously

Possibly this is true.. I been watching a lot of ones and watching Ben John’s and some of the other current best I’m not seeing it used. But I do see it in doubles a lot with women and people with tennis background. It’s just hella uncomfortable for me.
