Showed to my 10 year old daughter; she gets now why I limit everything.. was very useful for kids and adults.. i am amazed how many parents allow it, now she understands why I regulate things as I do

I saw that documentary as well, it's sad when you hang out with friends or family and everyone is just on their phone😒

My concern is young kids who don’t have responsible parents. What about them? There is a legal age for drinking There is a legal age for smoking There is a legal age for driving There is no legal age for these apps even though they are like cocaine. There needs to be some type of education on this in school

Pat the difference is that these tech companies are using highly intelligent algorithms to change our brain chemistry in a way that’s never happened before.

Use social wisely. If you are using it for growing your business, get information or sometimes to entertain yourself then there is nothing wrong.

This has been going on for years. People would stare at a football game or a movie while I visited even if they hadn’t seen me in years.

How many of those things are accused of “destroying the fabric of Society”? No invention can compare to the hold “screens” have had on the world! I totally agree with the film!

True story: Most all silicone valley families involved in tech at the high levels have no contact rules for their children. They learn arts/music/life/interpersonal/reading skills etc. The kids that have no contact will have leadership skills ingrained early, and won't even realize till later.

I love this reaction, the video caught me off-guard on who should be held accountable for addictions & good options on how to manage it personally and business wise.

2:37 No. The purpose of a business is to solve their customer’s problems. Adding value to the end consumer. With great power comes great responsibility, thus business owners should do what’s best for their customers...not just milk them as their very own cash cows. Business should operate in a way where both parties are winning. Symbiotic.

I agree 100%! There is a big difference between a product and its marketing, and how the customer gets educated on that product. The issue is not what you're given, but instead, what you do with what you're given.

Great points! I felt this is great advice. I can say I have overcome a lot of my addictions and have gotten better results from doing so. For me it's come down to more so balance and not getting burnt out on anything. Some things are worse than others. The bottom line is at the end of the day it all falls on you.

Totally agree with Pat on this. We can sum it up as... Personal responsibility! Take ownership for your life. I had to cut a few social media apps out of my life because it was becoming a problem (loss productivity and I noticed my mood was ALWAYS worst the more I used the apps).

What I love is the challenge to look at things in a different way, not react with the masses. Masses react and do nothing to change the outcome, the bad habits, the scene. Active listeners and people who lead with a question, as you did in this video, engage their audience differently, engage their minds differently, and allow for solutions to be designed and implemented. What I find fascinating is the idea of a global market addicted to the game of "competition" and "getting ahead". We fall for those that compete in the marketplace for our attention and we give it to the winner. However, we fail to apply the same spirit into our lives and act accordingly.

I've been a big sports fan for 40 yrs. After I was layed off in late March I decided to improve myself. I cut out all distractions in my life and a big one was sports. I learned how to meditate and have become a much wiser person with more time to help others.

I'm glad you did this because I watched it and it confirmed everything that I thought was happening with the phones and social media now a days. And I agree with you. Parents need to be actively monitoring their children so that they understand when and why to use these devices and what not to do as well. We are in a digital age and I can see the children of the future using more and more devices and apps to function in life. Work, school, and play. It's already starting. So these tech companies should definitely be careful with the power and intentions they have with their creations.

what a great perspective you shed light upon, we've really come to a point now where we have to take our OWN initiatives and steps for the sake of our well being. we can't be playing the blame game every now and then, the world won't change for us.

Correct. What you discussed here was exactly my take on the video. Though I find many, if not most people lack self discipline. Maybe there is a correlation between short attention spans and lack of discipline that results in more frequently addiction to things.

Stopped playing video games, stopped social medias, stopped watching porn, deleted all except RU-vid which I use to watch financial videos, documentaries and other related videos. This is the most motivated today that I have ever been. Which helped lead me to going back to working out and eating healthy as well since I am not focused on anything that doesn't better my life. I kind of have the Goggins attitude now, I love doing things that I don't want to, that better me as a person and break me down and make me look at myself and change things. I must say, your videos were part of that reason. Thank you for your great content.

I agree. I think the utility of documentaries like this is to alert people (parents) that didn't grow up with to it's dangers.

I definitely agree. Many want to point fingers and try and find a bad guy in why us and our kids are addicted but the truth is that it's a great product and it's upto us to use it only as a tool and not as anything else.

Pat consider the fact that social media is protected as platforms and can't be held liable for users content so don't you think if they censor they should be labeled a publisher? I agree with you except they are using physiological tools that people don't understand. I'm all about personal responsibility but we can't give the snake oil salesman a free pass to destroy the vulnerable!

Wow such great commentary from all the folks here and parents going through this experience. I am a child of an immigrant parent who was always suspicious of school, news, and propaganda. I always wanted to have videogames growing up and my dad would tell my brother and I hell no. No money for that nonsense. I realize that this helped me develop some critical thought and feel different enough to know how much the games, shows etc influenced my peers. Now in my 30's with kids of my own I must protect them because they have not developed the critical mind enough to distinguish truth from fantasy especially from social media I agree with you Pat about products being all addictive in theory, but the folks here mentioned that strong psychological theory is being put to use here. Dangerous stuff for the untrained mind of a child or teen. As parents we must prepare our children plant seeds in their mind to develop morals, ethics, and discernment of truth

How can the parents control their children when at this point the majority of parents are addicted as well. The documentary does well shining light on the issue.

I think the main difference of social media is that we're not talking about a type of "addiction" you would have with a brand of clothes or Apple or Audi. It's something closer to a real drug addiction, accessible to everyone at every hour. And something that can distort your reality and trap you inside a bubble without you even knowing it.

Pat is right on the point that we need to fix OURSELVES first. From addiction to racism, hate, fear, anger, greed, etc.. If we could fix our minds, many of these problems would filter themselves out... from the way businesses run, down to how we treat each other on the individual level. We have an issue where technology advances faster than our consciousness can adapt. As the documentary says, Our hardware (brains) are millions of years old. However, we have the ability to upgrade our software and even actually physically change our brains through certain practices which have all been scientifically proven. With these practices, we can literally shrink/atrophy our brain's amygdala which is responsible for our strong fear and emotionally based responses. On the other hand, with these same practices, we actually grow/thicken our pre-frontal cortex which is associated with higher-order brain functions such as awareness, concentration, and decision-making. Machine learning algorithms teach themselves to reach a certain outcome based on the data fed into it. The job is to feed you more of what you already consume. Feed you more of what you give your attention to. The algorithms are just exploiting and magnifying a nature about ourselves that is already there. If on a mass scale we changed what we gave our attention to, the algorithm shifts. You can see this happen in real-time if you rapidly change ALL the mages you follow and look at, you will see the suggestions change very rapidly. Imagine a place where we only gave our attention to positivity, love, and inspiration.

We can't point fingers but we need accountability on both sides, families & cooperations.
