Through their relationship that spanned heroin addiction, incarceration, recovery and an immigration fight to avoid deportation, Stellin and MacIndoe share the stunning self-portraits photographer MacIndoe took during his lowest life points, and tell their story of how they climbed out from the many black holes of recovery.
Susan Stellin, a reporter, is co-author with Graham MacIndoe of the memoir Chancers, published in 2016. Alternating between their two points of view, they chronicle Graham’s struggle with heroin addiction, arrest, incarceration, and recovery, as well as his fight to avoid getting deported back to Scotland. After he won his case, they were awarded a fellowship from the Alicia Patterson Foundation for their project American Exile, a series of interviews and portraits showing families divided by deportation. Their work has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, New York magazine, TheAtlantic.com, and elsewhere. They both teach at The New School in New York City.

Imagine my surprise when I went to the same prison. Edit - holy wow - I have a video on my channel about my boyfriend’s experience in prison and the Freedom Program. He would have been in there almost around the same time. This is so wonderful. I found recovery in 2008, and my boyfriend found recovery in 2011. The Freedom Program was the best thing that happened to Greg.

So what advice can you give for someone like a prison wife of 10yrs and he has struggled with addiction even on the inside. Recently had been in a few programs of MRT. Then had some relapses. How can I still be there and love and help him without enabling and sending money. I have to set boundaries with ending the stigma of enabling
