Addiction's Grip: Steve Howe's Tragic Tale of MLB Banishment
Do you remember the name, Steve Howe? He was a dynamic southpaw on the baseball diamond who crafted a 12-season legacy in Major League Baseball from 1980 to 1996. And the echoes of his impact on the game still resonated in 1997 when he wrapped up his career with the Sioux Falls Canaries in the independent Northern League.
Sadly though, Howe's story was one of disappointing contrasts - he was Rookie of the Year in 1980, the savior of the 1981 World Series, and an All-Star in 1982. Yet, shadows loomed over his career as alcohol and cocaine issues threatened to eclipse his brilliance.
In today's video we look at Addiction's Grip: Steve Howe's Tragic Tale of MLB Banishment...keep watching for more on los angeles dodgers, steve howe,dodgers, steve howe dodgers, steve howe (baseball player), yankees dodgers world series, la dodgers, dodgers astros, #dodgers, 1981 dodgers, l.a. dodgers, dodgers news, dodger stadium, dodgers interview, dodgers first pitch,1981 dodgers astros, dodgers rumors, yankees dodgers, dodgers legends, dodgers pregame, steve, and dodgers baseball

Id like to know how his career would have went minus his addictions..I dealt with addiction myself and the reasons for addiction are much deeper than just the addiction..Its a symtom of a deeper hurt within..Baseball failed him..

I’d love to know that as well. I totally agree, baseball failed him and probably enabled him. It doesn’t seem like he ever got to the root of what was causing his need to use. Thank you for sharing your story!

Your very welcome.Its something we will never know..But its always a deeper issue drug addicts and alcoholics are running from something and getting numb for various reasons.I was sexually assaulted as a child and carried that with me for a long time.Though as a young adult I thought I was ok that it didnt bother me.But I didnt realize I was uncomfortable in my own skin.I got into just feeling good partying and having fun.I developed a powerful addiction.And as life's problems began I wasnt equipped to deal with them.Living life on lifes terms became a scary thing for me.I pushed the emotional pain down as far as I could by getting numb and it brought things to a point of consequences that brought me on a 25 year journey of recovery and relapse.Until I got to the realization of learning why I did the things I did..Im now 51 years old and clean five years and helping others get clean..I imagine thats what it was like for Steve Howe.But whatever Steves reasons were.I wish he had come to terms with himself before hand..

A tragic ride for sure. You have to give him credit for continuing to try and battle back. Thank you for the comment.

When you consider all of the issues he suffered from, it’s incredible how well the man could play. Suspended several times and came back and would show he still had it. Truly remarkable.

Makes you wonder what he could have achieved if he hadn’t had all of those issues. Thank you for the comment!

What a great video. One of my earliest baseball memories involves Steve Howe's tenure with the Yankees. It wasn't until later that I learned about the struggles that he had with substance abuse, and I vividly remember hearing about his death in 2006. It's tragically true that baseball failed him by dealing with his drug use with a focus on punishment rather than a focus on rehabilitation. Unfortunately that appears to be the case with society at large. RIP Steve Howe (1958-2006)

Thank you for your kind words. He definitely didn’t get the help he needed. A sad story all around.

How is that on the league or the team? For most people: if they fail a drug test they lose their job entirely. It was up to Steve to stay sober, it wasn't baseball's responsibility
@BBUYTTV
@BBUYTTV 4 месяца назад
@@rancidcrawfish I wouldn't say it is necessarily completely the leagues fault. However, there was obviously an interest in having him to continue pitching in the league. Just from the perspective of investing in a player you would think they would have provided more support for him to get rehabilitation just to protect their investment.

It perfectly illustrates how difficult it is to kick an addiction. Thank you for the comment.

He definitely did it to himself, but addiction is a terribly difficult thing to overcome. A tragic story and a tragic end.
