In this video I go over the process of adding factory Bluetooth to your 2007-2012 Saab 9-3. If you found this video helpful, be sure to like, share and subscribe!
The Vehicle Communication Interface Module (VCIM) aka the communication or OnStar module has 2 Bluetooth versions: With 1 pink fakra connector 20942557 / With 2 fakra connectors pink & blue 20829984
Big shoutout to Saab Central Forum for having a thread with an incredible amount of information to make this video possible: www.saabcentral.com/threads/h...

2007-2009 Saab SatNav Navigation radio part numbers: 12841612 / 12777838
In my 2008, it originally had a Bose radio that was non-navigation. During the process of this Nav retrofit, I tapped into 2 wires from the K14 plug behind the radio (pins 4 and 5) and ran wires all the way to the VCIM in the back to the J3 plug (pins 2 and 4). If you want to add Bluetooth with your retrofitted nav head unit, then you have to add those wires first. Vid on adding these wires can be found here: • Adding Voice Recogniti... Then to also get Bluetooth commands, go the extra step shown in this video by connecting the K14 plug pin 4 to K16 plug pin 7. Then connect K14 plug pin 5 to K16 plug pin 15.
If you have a non-navigation head unit and want to add factory Bluetooth, you must first add in a 2009 or later head unit. If your car has the Bose system, which you can easily identify by looking at the dash speakers, then you need to put in a Bose radio 2009 or newer. With or without XM radio doesn’t matter because that is an external module and will work either way.
Some of the 2009+ Non-Navigation Bose (6 disc) optioned radios include: 12779270 / 12842428 / 12849449 / 13319858
Some of the 2009+ Non-Navigation and Non-Bose (single disc) optioned radios: 13319857 / 12842427 / 12842427
Now along with that updated Non-Nav radio, you have to take the K16 plug going into the radio and add pins 7 and 15, then run those all the way back to the VCIM and connect to the J2 plug pins 1 and 2.

Gary, you ROCK! Just wanted to hop back on here and thank you for all of your help on this. Honestly, I wouldn't have done it without your help. For other viewers, I bought a 9-3 aero (2008) and didn't realize it didn't come with handsfree calling like my 2011. But with this video and Gary's help was able to get the updated Onstar box on eBay and it only took about 45 mins to install. Now I have wonderful handsfree calling and don't have to use a 3rd party bluetooth adapter (which honestly, I found doesnt sound well for me or the person I'm calling.) So happy with this!! Thank you again, Gary 🙏

Your video was a huge help and inspiration! THANK YOU AGAIN!! Been trying to figure out how to do this for a year. I was successful adding BT today to my ‘08 convertible (non nav, non Bose) without running wires. Replaced HU with an ‘09 and a BT VCIM 20829984. Found a local guy with a Tech 2 to marry the HU. Then did some reading… Found a post in the Saab forum link you shared (think it was page 18) that gave instructions on moving 2 wires from the K14 connecter behind the radio/HU to the K16 connector. This was a 2 day project for me but once everything was in place… Boom, BT, steering controls and voice recognition worked instantly.😃

Non nav, non Bose wire move instructions from Saab forum. “Swapped 2 wires behind radio to the other plug. Basically, add an OnStar from a BT car, add a radio from a BT car, swap 2 wires and you have factory Bluetooth. You do not need to run wires. Plug K14, (Behind the radio, which you have out anyway) pull the green wire out of #4, put it in the empty socket #7 in K16. K14, pull the grey wire out of socket 5, put it in the empty socket #15 in K16. The wiring diagrams showed K14 #5 as black, but it was grey on my 2008 CV and my 2011 SS. It took longer to Google than to actually add Bluetooth.”

Great to see this finally done in a video. Reading through forum posts on retrofitting Bluetooth are pretty confusing, I had no idea wires needed to be added. I’m still not even sure if my voice prompts are working since I still don’t have a nav dvd 😢

Would you be able to tell me what amp you’re running? I finally got a nav dvd and set all this stuff up and I’ve got voice commands and Bluetooth working but as soon as the Bluetooth or onstar is active I get a deafening tone coming from the front speakers. If I pull fuse 25 in the engine bay (Amp, sound system 2) it kills the front speakers and the tone goes with them. This is how I managed to pair my phone but I don’t want to have no front speakers normally. I can see on esaab there’s different amps for the Bose system one with nav and one without

Dude. Please do something regarding the fuel cap lock, my 2008 aero does not have the original installation, and although I put the harness to the rec module, I got the actuator and enabled the function with tech2, it does not work. I always watch your videos and thanks to that I have made many improvements to my saabs. Greetings

How crazy, I was literally working on a vid about this and have yet to edit and post. I ran into the same issue. Turns out I believe on 2008+ there isn't a wire from the BCM to REC. So even with the proper fuel lock actuator harness and tech2 programming it won't work. I'm I'm hoping to find an alternative to tap into for power but I temporary set that project to the side.

For some reason The two wires that go to the black connector in the video has Is already there my Didn't come with Navigation What I need is a more detailed video of the wiring. Is it possible to get the two thousand Bluetooth onstar wiring harness wiring harness out of a different vehicle in the I know I have to take the dashboard out because mine is cracked anyway

I simply took the OnStar box out of my 2011SS and plugged it into my 2008CV. I have Bluetooth phone now, but have to initiate and end with the phone, as pickup and hangup do not work. Will the wires Address this issue, or is the newer radio needed as well? What do the 2 wires actually do? Radio displays bluetooth on startup, and displays call info when calling. I could try the 2011 radio, but it does not have XM, and the CV does, and I use it. Also, even though I added the module via Tech2, the red light is on for OnStar. I do not need or use OnStar. I can just unplug the OnStar button panel.

BT OnStar unit, BT radio. Both added via Tech2. You do not need to run wires. Non BT cars use phone =/-, BT cars use monomix+/_. Simply swap the 2 wires from K14 to K16. K14-5 to K16-15, K14-4 to K16-7. Thanks for the info!

Do I understand you correctly? I have a 2008 with a non-nav, Bose sound system. Would I need to change my head unit to add factory Bluetooth?

I was successful with my ‘08 today. Didn’t think it was possible and it was more difficult than I expected but once I added a ‘09 head unit, I saw signs it was gonna work. I added a response to this video that briefly recaps the process for non nav, non Bose. So happy I didn’t have to run wires.

While I think this is super informative, I don't think 2009 has bluetooth no matter what. I own two 09 9-3's, one Arc, one Aero, neither has bluetooth.

It was a build option. All saab had a factory build sheet, with the built in options listed, And the options not included. All saab were supplied with this build sheet. The website where you entered your vin number, and could then view your factory build sheet specification is no longer a free service, But it is somewhere on the Web. When visiting a saab showroom, the salesman would ask which model you wanted, then he would show you an additional options list, where each item was listed with it's additional cost. Some additions included, 11 speaker sound system, Subwoofer options, including 2nd amp, Sat nav, Bluetooth hands free, heated seats, electrically operated seats, auto wipers, Auto dimming mirror, Power folding mirrors, Look down mirrors (for reversing) Heated mirrors, Leather trim options, Wheel size options, Transmission options, Engine size and output options, Parking sensors, Etc etc etc It was literally possible to add around £6000 To the price of a new saab by including the highest spec car with all options.
