After trying this here's a very important advice: TEST YOUR LEDS BEFORE SOLDERING. 100% of the time there are two or three bad leds and you don't know it until you actually test them. so make sure to insert your leds, bend them and then turn on the keyboard and see if they light up. sometimes they don't make contact since they're not soldered so you have to wiggle them a bit. So this and you won't have to go through the nightmare of desoldering a broken led that won't turn on.

I am a little late to the party I assume, but this is quite a promising video! Ive been looking for a video that teaches me how I could implement RGBs to a hand-wired keyboard. This seems to be quite useful here, since here the switches and LEDs are seperate from the PCB. Do you have a tip or idea how I could manage wiring the RGB properly to the keyboard? I am considering that either two Arduino boards or one large one may be possible to use here. (I am really new to this, so I am still figuring this out! Appreciate any tips)

Your best bet would be to use ws2812b-like LED-strips to minimise the necessary I/O to your microcontroller

Do you know if the LED's are individually addressable for this board? Or if there's some limitation with 2 pin LED's? I'm about to put in some on the same board and I was just curious if this was possible, since I thought it'd be cool to have some effects for when you press the keys down and stuff. This is kinda my first foray into LED's on keyboards so I don't really know what I'm doing haha

Great video. Thank you for posting it. I just received my KBD75v2 and would like to do the same. Question - do I need to re-flash the firmware in order to have the hotkeys toggle the in-key leds on/off? The pins currently measure 0.35v. Thanks in advance

Do all mechanical keyboard switches have the same LED hole, the same size? Struggling to find anything specific relating to LED size when looking at switches
@basekit
@basekit 3 года назад
No, some switches have no opening for a soldered LED at all. Since SMD LEDs on the PCB are so common, it may be tricky to confirm if a switch has a slot for an LED or not, unless you can look closely at the switch housing and see the slot is there. Usually, if they have a slot it will be standard size, but not always.

I'm considering buying a random prebuilt with hot swappable switches and rgb lighting. I'm a bit worried about the LEDs failing and needing to be replaced in the future. Do you think it will probably be as easy as you have shown here? In case it matters, the keyboard I am looking at is HS108T.

Yes, you can use VIA or map a key to dim or turn on/off the per-key LEDs. On this board, only single color LEDs are supported, the lights will not be RGB for per-key.

If the listing for a key switch like the Gateron Quinn says it is compatible with LED plug in, does that mean they don't have to be soldered?
@basekit
@basekit 2 месяца назад
If your PCB does not have built in LEDs you will need to solder in the LEDs. The “compatibility” of the switch usually refers to the slot in the switch for the LED to physically pass through for installation to the PCB underneath the switch.

I've to ask you something: I've the Philips G614 and it has 19 RGB light modes. I want it to be only blue, but none of this 19 modes are a single color in the whole keyboard. I think that inside of it there's a kind of light control. I wish I could make it be JUST blue. Could you help me about it? Can you tell me what should I search and study for making it right?
@sniff1015
@sniff1015 Год назад
U gotta follow the vid and buy BLUE LEDs for the whole keyboard which are IDENTICAL in a way that they have the same dimensions and same height as the keyboard’s LED u alr have. Moreover, just add the led lights and connect them. It’s simple metal connect to metal conducts electricity no? Follow that and then u will have ur customer keyboard. Also if I were u I would buy multi color LED so I can have different colors on my keyboard but hey that’s my opinion. It’s simple really how to change the color of ur keyboard but u just need the right tools which is the the automatic drill and hot glue and small pliers and that’s really it.

I’d be shocked if it worked. My understanding is that RGB LEDs require more than two pins. The two pins are +voltage and ground. You need more than 2 pins to “address” an RGB LED, in other words to command the LED what color to display. If I’m wrong please let us know.
