Some V2000 format machines had remote control receivers as an optional extra. Here we add one to a Grundig 2x4 Super. We also try to upgrade a VR2324 but struggle to source the required parts.

Great work. Good on you for trying to resurrect these machines.

I remember getting a new old stock add-on wireless remote for my SONY C6 MKII Beta back in the early 90's. It was a very simple remote but essential for skipping ad breaks. The most memorable thing about it was you could almost point it anywhere and it worked. There was also a wired remote option for this model which I had previously but it did become a trip hazard very quickly.

So glad it worked-I almost binned it recently, I did look in the assorted box it was in for the mount but it didn't see it so I may or may not have it elsewhere, likewise I may or may not have the remote somewhere. According to the www the stereo model 808 was silver the super model 800 was like yours. I definitely don't have the Philips one. I did once have the composite in/out module for the V2000 series but I no longer have that only the service manual for the module.

The nice thing about all Philips (related) audio video hardware is that the remote controls and receivers were all basically the same, based on the RC5 format. You can probably take a receiver out of anything Philips from the 1980s/90s and connect it to 5V, ground and the appropriate input pin on the microcontroller and you'll have a working remote control. The RC5 bus is basically a single line that gets pulled to ground or 5V (I don't remember which) with a pull-up or pull-down resistor, and the signals are the demodulated bits from the remote receiver. Also I'm pretty sure that DIN plug on the V2000 remote receivers was a standard plug that's probably still available.

Considering how much these cost back in the day, it seems crazy that remote control was an optional extra!

They were a nice way to make VCR's just a little bit cheaper (V2000 were already the most expensive VCR's even without the remote). Lots of people still had TV's with no remotes too. If you had to walk to the TV to put it on preset 12 for the VCR, you don't need a remote for the VCR either. Made perfect sense to me 😄 Better than other compromises such as wired remote controls that many Japanese VCR's had. Those just seemed silly.

it reminded me of the remote upgrade on the toshiba v8600 which i owned. that was stuck on the side with velcro and plugged into the front wired remote socket.

I think that if you take any modern or 90’s IR receiver ( the small black 3 pin ones) and connect it to the T4 terminal it will work, pin 1 is ground, pin 2 is rc signal and pin 3 is 5V supply.

Actually the Grundig remotes are just wired in parallel to the front buttons, so you can just build your own wired remote by making a keypad matrix and connecting it to that socket.

My first VCR hack was adding a wired remote control (built myself) to my Sanyo 5000.

I did the same to a VTC5150! It was an Aiwa cassette deck remote control model RC-10 which was nice because it also had LEDs in it, so I added circuitry to drive those from the machine's LEDs.

that remote receiver colorwise looks like its for the Philips re-badgered version of the grundig 2x4, not that I have seen it in person

If you have a VR6560 in the scrap bin, try this module. These modules apear to be the same like on the v2000 (you can see the module in my vr6560 videos)

The contamination on the connector pins looks very similar to that on the pins of some 20+ year old Hirose plugs with silver plated contacts. Perhaps a metal polish might be worth a go if you come across something similar again rather than risking removing the plating by using anything too abrasive?

I was wondering if it would come off pause if you pressed pause again on the remote, and play works only when the mechanism is in stop mode. (?) Also, how many pins are on that remote plug ? I'm trying to get a remote for my Philips reel to reel but they seem to be very rare. So if I can find the right plug I could make my own. :) Have a happy new year.

I had a video 2000 and travelled 30 miles for the remote control unit, only to find that the battery was very difficult to get hold of

I have (or had) two of those Gundigs 2x4 (think they were Super) in the loft if anyone wants them. One working-ish, one for spares. However I dont remeber seeing them recently and might have thrown them out. Plus has a remote control but who know wherte that went. (UK hants/berks)

Wow I had that add on module back in the early nineties, bought as surplus, but not the v2000 machine itself. Thought I'd be able to hack it to control other things .... I was very wrong. Now I wonder where i put it.

Would it be possible to reverse engineer and build the GRUNDIG or Philips IR receiver circuit to integrate into these machines and find a universal that works, sounds like a project.

Yeah, I have 2x8 machine, the front panel is in german, some only with abberviations, very peculiar to operate and I still think mine needs adjustments.

I also have a 2x8 with German front panel, in my store room. I'm not sure it's repairable though, it's very high hours.

@@video99couk I have no idea how to check mine, I got it nre belt and glued one of the spool guides, because it was broken and the drive would fail load test ecause of it. With nre belt the image is a it unstable, but it generally works, I had to get the funny 270 degrees DIN-6 to SCART adaptor to connect to TV, I will need one to RCA to connect to my AV receiver. Not that anyone ever asked to have V2000 tape transfered. But I recentely had someone ask about microMV, the cams are unobtainable pretty much.

2 Questions: Does the Remote Control still have a 4LR61 Battery ? (my standard Supplier no longer knows the Product), and can Universal Remote Controls still use the "Secret Code" ?
@video99couk
@video99couk Год назад
The battery is marked 7K67 and 4LR61, size J, I replaced it a few months ago. I think some universal remotes will do the job.

Hello I have an identical model and even with the same IR receiver, unfortunately I do not have a remote control ... BUT that's not a problem... My video recorder rotates too fast during operation and thus the picture is distorted ... I don't know what to do here... In addition, I have 4 other 2x4 VCRs and each has a defect ... For example, no sound ... I really like watching your channel, even though I don't understand almost anything 😉 Best regards Mariusz from Poland 🙂

The one with no sound may be simplest to repair. Swap the audio PCB over from another if you have one. Also the A/V socket on the back can be troublesome, it may just need cleaning.

Do my ears deceive me or has the special delivery postman changed? Always nervy when you get a new postie working your patch... Very brave to opt to fix the front panel being a bit skewiff... after a successful job a bolt on like that is always tempting fate
