This is part 4 of my home made pugmill. It's a quick video showing how I hook up a vacuum pump with underwhelming results. I still love the pugmill, and I thought I needed a vacuum system for it to work well, but it turns out you don't.
If you have thoughts on what is happening in the video with the clay being held back under vacuum, please leave me a comment.

Your videos are really good. Clear, easy to understand, different, entertaining, well made. It's baffling that you don't have many more subs and views. I hope they come because you put out genuinely great content.

Really cool. I have seen systems that use clay that's been soaking in water for a few days that is placed in really large bags that is then applied to a vacuum. After they pump all the moisture out its instant wheel workable clay. I have never touched it with my own hands, but from the video the clay looked like normal pugged clay.

There is a simpler way to do that, but more time consuming. Just take a bag of stiff clay, add a cup or two of water. Submerge the bag into a 5 gallon bucket filled about half way full of water. The water will push the excess air out. Twist and tie the bag closed, and leave submerged for a day or two. The pressure of the water in the bucket will force the water in the bag into the clay. I've been doing this on most my bags of clay lately, because that's how I prefer it for throwing.

Neat build! Would you consider using fireplace ash or wood ash as a glaze? I've seen other videos on here about it, but your glaze making/testing videos are by far the most comprehensive and well done.

Great invention! Thanks for sharing. Are you using linseed as resin?

What type of background do you need to invent or reinvent a pug mill that works well? I am guessing an engineer along with working with many types of machines durning summer breaks from college. Could you supply what type of background you have and what type of work center are you working from (home workshop or various machine shops?) Just could not do that myself as a DIY, so....... I guess purchasing a small version pug mill is well worth the money to a sociology major.

A degree in Accounting and a career in public education. Also, the ability to watch a lot of RU-vid and buy tools on craigslist. Yes, buying one is the move for most people. :)
