Thank you for this great idea and tutorial. I was struggling to see how I could use my old screen without needing to fork out disproportionate money for an VESA adaptor. Being a keen DIYer, I adapted your methods to suit my Acer screen which has an award curve at the back. I guess people contemplating on this have to have some DIY experience and will need to do adaptations like strengthening the screw points, checking screw-head clearence etc etc. for their screens. Excellent post and thank you again.

I'm going to do the same thing for a cheap Asus I purchased some years back off a work colleague. Then last week I got a free Onn monitor that had VESA mount. So now I want a dual monitor setup but the Asus doesnt' have VESA mount. As an IT Admin I was thinking of doing it this way already but now that I saw someone else do it I'm all in!

A heavy guitar pick will help to open the monitor's back cover beautifully, and btw isn't that vesa mounting bracket installed upside down? In all the arms I know that adjustable hole is placed in the upper side to lock the monitor and set it's height

This is such a chaotic video but I was struggling to figure out how to open an old monitor housing and did not realize you just had to pry open the bezel! Thanks for that! But man oh man... calling them drill "tips" (maybe this is an english thing idk), no spacers between the plastic and metal, needle nose plyers to tighten the bolts, upside down VESA mount, WING NUTS!?!? Fucking hell dude. I enojyed this though -- In a RU-vid filled with neat and tidy unrealstic bullshit we need more chaotic and hacky workarounds.

Thank you so much for this wondering video! I'm new to doing such activities like using drills and usign bolts and such. However, I'm naturally quite a creatieve person and cab usually create things without any knoewledge (like weird methods, like using tie wraps to connect things and what not. So my guess is that I be able todo all this once I get my hands on the right equipment ot do it. Anyway, to get back to my quesriton; its great I found this video, but I am still trying to know all the things I need. I took a screenshot from the screws and bolts you used, and apparently you use a "philips screwdrivers' which is apparnelyty different from aa regular one (google just explained that to me). So I wan to make sure I can buy all the parts and translate the words ot my native language (dutch)...So the philips screwdriver for example..is it a Phillips PH1 one? Or is another one (if another, which one?) I often find all these technical things fun and it does not look complicated at all to do it. However, if you have no basic knowledge on the names of such stuff and the equipment used, it feels more challenging to ge tthat part right. I'm sure I can do most htings in the video ..but the sort of basic knowledge is what I do not have. My dad used to do all kinda stuff like this and unfortunately he got sick and can not do it..(as he enjoyed such things, as it was kind of his way to show love).. However, now it leaves me kind of lacking in basic knowedge So I need to buy - the bolts, screws, nuts...but specificly the size ( 3/16 x 25mm?) - a philips screwdriver - a drill (I might have one or more as they were once bought, but never used). How strong does it need to be? Can this does with low power cheap one, or do i need something with a bit more 'balls' so to say? - drill bits in the right size. Which size would I need? or a range? Which size did you use? Sorry for the uninformed questions I have regarding this. I would really like to do this, as somehow I can not tolerate a lot other newer screens as they make me dizzy. So this is why i want to stick to my old one, but then on vesa mount I had already bought for my new one. Anyway, I'm gonna go sleeping. Thanks a lot for the greatvideo showing how this is done! Have a great day

@jayleeb377
@jayleeb377 11 месяцев назад
This could have been done much better and neater. I couldn't imagine giving this to a paying customer and being comfortable that it would last and they would remain satisfied. First of all those bolts were too long, they also should have been facing into the internals of the monitor which would have been possible with the right sized bolt. The wingnuts were total overkill and completely pointless for your purpose. You should have used one nut on the inside and one on the outside to make sure that the bolt can't spin (like you said they could when tightening the wingnut). You also should have been using lock washers along with the nuts to keep them from coming undone. Another thing I would have used is some thread locker to make sure those nuts weren't going anywhere. You also should have done more to support the weight of the monitor because those plastic backings are not made for holding weight like that and your customer could very well end up with a broken monitor if the plastic breaks. If you had even just used some small scraps of metal to make some supports that go from one bolt to another inside the panel that could have spread the weight out a little more. The better way to do it would have been to try and make something that spans the entire length of the inside of the back panel to distribute the weight evenly (could even just be thin metal or some wood) which would give way better support since it wouldn't be centralized to one location. There are also adapters you can buy for non-VESA compatible monitors, some connect where the stand connects and some just grip the monitor, but they would all be more stable than just drilling some holes in the cheap plastic and hoping that it holds up.
@benruss5309
@benruss5309 11 месяцев назад
To be fair I don't think this is something someone would do for a paying customer it's more for people like me who have a spare monitor they want to repurpose. If I can't find a way to vesa mount my old monitor for vertical use for under $10 it's going in the bin. I will use some large washers around the holes though so I can get it nice and tight without the screws potentially pulling through.

Sometimes manufacturers loose their way. I saw a Samsung wireless subwoofer with no soundbar the other day. Looked it up, turns out they connected using proprietary wireless link. So without the soundbar it was useless. Not even compatible with other Samsung soundbar since it was "going to be the new standard" at the time and then they abandoned it the next year.

@rickstechrepairs
@rickstechrepairs 2 года назад
Not nuts just practical
@swilhelm3180
@swilhelm3180 2 года назад
@@rickstechrepairs Thin plastic is not strong. And press fitting that thin plastic to the frame of the monitor is not a secure way of holding it. You have 2 possible failure points. Those are the problems. As there's a metal frame in almost all LCD/LED monitors it may be possible to drill/thread some 100 mm VESA mounting holes into it if you're very careful. Then using washers to take up the space, anchor through the rear cover to the monitor arm plate. Still not good but at least now its in metal. Another option is to drill several holes far apart and rig up a larger VESA adapter plate so its holding it from a larger area. Not many people have threading tools or drilling skills for this though. You might though! :)

This monitor weighs around 4kg to 5kg. It doesn’t need some intricate engineering solution. It just needed exactly what was shown - the addition of the vesa plate. I did the same to my two similar monitors well over a decade ago and they are still solid as a rock.
@TheForce_Productions
@TheForce_Productions Год назад
I don't see anything nuts here, since using some basic school physics; weight divides in equal parts by each of it's support points and by the other hand led monitors are mostly very light weigh as well.
@swilhelm3180
@swilhelm3180 Год назад
@@TheForce_Productions Yeah, you're nuts if you use thin plastic to support anything. Its called dynamic loading. Its not the static weight. Things can knock a monitor. It has to be held quite securely.
