Both terrific tenors. Corelli never did Butterfly, but Del Monaco did do the opera live and this aria was usually one of his concert pieces as it was circa 1961 when I saw him at Carnegie Hall. He was Amazing

Non si può scegliere,due tenori così diversi,tecnicamente eccellenti entrambi ma sostanzialmente diversi,l'uno completa l'altro. Nel repertorio drammatico eroico Del Monaco, in quello romantico e purista Corelli.
DUE grandi voci che non esistono ORA, IL MONACO Corelli e sono veramente grandi, NON MARCKETING. Molti tenori che l'esecuzione di questa aria, ma anche sublimi come questi due non sono .. Personalmente mi piace LA VOCE DEL grande maestro CORELLI THE BEST di tutti i tempi, sintonizzare MAI, diminuendo e durature Il suo grande e molto bella, le note alte FINE, GRANDE, IL FIGLIO SOLO E NATURALI TOMA'HERMOSAMENTE VOCE DEL TUO è potente e bello. CORELLI BEST
Corelli (nonosante l'orchestra) è un grandissimo... per squillo e colore... per l'interpretazione, per il fraseggio.... 10/10 (splendido il lab ma riesce ancora a rendere più squillante il sib veramente immenso) Mario del Monaco ottimo nelle note di testa e nel centro libero... meno pulito nelle note basse... ma l'ultimo acuto vale dieci biglietti d'ingresso 9e1/2 /10 averne oggi di voci così!!!!

Del Monaco, Corelli, è una parola come si fa a preferire l'uno all'altro, almeno in questa romanza non sò scegliere... posso dire che ce ne sono pochi migliori di questi due... saluti
Both were phenomenal. Del Monaco was more baritonal in the mid-range and less thrilling from Bb and above at his peak. Corelli while quite baritonal in the mid-range was not quite as much so as Del Monaco but had a more thrilling top from Bb and above with more squillo on those notes. As a result, Del Monaco became with time a true dramatic tenor while Corelli remained more of a pure spinto or dramatico-spinto who could very effectively sing dramatic roles. Del Monaco seemed more about raw power/masculinity in the sound. Corelli was primarily about soaring/ringing high notes and raw emotional anguish yet with tremendous power as well. He was the king of milking the long melodic line in order to achieve every ounce of the composer's intended passion. I can't think of any other tenors that were/are their equals.
Corelli was the more passionate and emotional singer (and so I like his performance of "Addio, Firito Asil" better). But Mario Del Monaco was the more heavy-weight "masculine" and authoritative tenor, so in certain roles he came first. Let us thank god for both of them and not worry who was "number one," but just be grateful for both these magnificent voices in our lives.
Buoyancy, power and beauty.....Corelli Power, better interpretation and rawness....Del Monaco. I score on this particular aria......9.6/9.8....Del Monaco. Even though my favorite tenor is Corelli.
Perchè fare questa differenza? Ok a lei piace di più del Monaco. Le posso testimoniare xò un episodio ke equilibra sensibilmente la bilancia ricordo Ernani in Arena a Vr. L'entrata di Corelli elegante statuario incantò il pubblico. Una sensazione che mi è rimasta nella pelle. 2 artisti parimenti straordinari che si stimavano reciprocamente anke in età avanzata si tefefonavano (cosa rarissima tra tenori "primedonne". Kissà quando e se avremo voci simili e figure così carismatiche.
Siamo nell'olimpo dei tenori e con 2 dei più grandi di tutti i tempi. Ma se proprio dobbiamo fare un confronto scendendo in dettagli tecnici (che nulla però possono aggiungere o togliere al gusto personale) Corelli modula un vibrato leggermente abbondante con una voce complessivamente più chiara e meno timbrata, da lirico spinto qual era. Del Monaco ha sicuramente un vibrato più naturale ed un colore più scuro essendo il più grande tenore drammatico di sempre. La sua voce acquista un metallo e una forza che rende forse meglio la passionalità del personaggio. Personalmente mi entusiasma di più la sua interpretazione pur rimanendo comunque anche quella di Corelli una prestazione di altissimo livello.
Mario Del Monaco sings this aria with more refinement than Franco Corelli, usually it is the other way around, usually Corelli sings with more refinement. But Del Monaco obviously had a great connection with this aria and he has performed the role live, it shows in his beautiful interpretation. Corelli most likely only recorded this aria once, of course his high notes at the end are still incredible.
Vocalmente entrambi straordinari. In Corelli sento forse una musicalità più spiccata e un canto a tratti più attento. Del monaco eccelle per ricchezza vocale e controllo dei fiati (dove Corelli è più prudente). Sull'interpretazione e ho qualche riserva (soprattutto nel secondo, vorrei qualche finezza in più oltre alla pura esibizione di voce), ma è questione di gusto personale. Inaccettabile comunque eliminare la linea vocale di Sharpless (della serie "tanto quello che conta è il tenore").
Corelli, здесь его страсть непререкаема, а возможности - практически безграничны. На его фоне в данном случае MDM выглядит бледновато и немного скучно. Но MDM все равно - молодец... только ему, на мой взгляд, под силу соперничать с Il Supremo.

Anche se sono un fan del grande Del Monaco sono stati due grandissimi tenori con una straordinaria vocalità E una grandissima tecnica due mostri sacri.peccato che oggi ci dobbiamo accontentare di Bocelli tenore pop. Mah..
Corelli was unsurpassed in upper register freedom; Mario was certainly more convincing in the dramatic/forza rep. But as far as spinto goes: CORELLI CORELLI CORELLI
Evidentemente abbiamo due idea differenti di tecnica vocale... i miei quarant'anni di vita nel mondo della lirica mi hanno insegnato alcune cose. Questo non significa che non sia disposto a discuterne tutt'altro c'è sempre da imparare. Qui posso solo dire che la tecnica costale diaframmatica evidentemente non esclude la possibilità di far risuonare i suoni di testa grazie al passaggio sia con le voci "piccole" che "grandi". Lo spazio è però troppo esiguo per argomentare. Un cordiale saluto.

Preferisco Del Monaco per il bel legato(anche Corelli ha un bel legato,sia chiaro),ma come al solito abusa di "portamenti".Questo è il mio gusto,ma...sarei ben felice di riascoltare un Corelli ai giorni nostri!!!! Che razza di voci!!!!
@Nicrhind This might have been true for a few years, but Corelli's technique was not the healthiest way of singing. This is why he ruined his voice early and had to retire. As wonderful and trumpety as his top was, he accessed it with an open throat type of technique, which forces the larynx down instead of letting it naturally move freely. Fortunately when you have your youth on your side, your vocal chords can withstand this. It's too bad it caught up to him. I still love his thrilling voice.
@Kay Young he didnt quit because of stage fright though your correct that he suffered terribly from it, he quit because his voice was gone pretty much a dull heavy sound same thing happened del monaco after say 1963 both used the melochi method of lowered larynx.del monaco deb in 1940 though he was singing before then and sang through to 1974/75 but his best years were definitely the 50s the vocal method catching up with him eventually.simlar for corelli saw him in some concerts in japan and the voice was all thick and heavy
To be honest... I like MdM very much, let say I ador him, really! But this one here has a huge difference in the quality of the voices. Corelli wins here with miles, no doubt! He sings it better also than me, unfortunately!
Preferisco Del Monaco perchè più "classico".Mi spiego meglio: Corelli(MITICO) abusa di portamenti(suo vezzo per tutta la carriera).Detto ciò VIVA ENTRAMBI!!!!!!!
In my view Corelli is usually a much better singer, despite his flaws (lisping, overemotionalism and taking liberties of the score), he is a true singing star of the opera. But here he is sobbing too much really, and Del Monaco is surprisingly subtle...For once I have to give Del Monaco the Crown.
Entrambi hanno caratterizzato gli anni 50/60 della lirica...2 pietre miliari per i giovani.Senza dimenticarci il grande Pippo DI STEFANO sublime per una decina d anni prima di deteriorare la sua voce in ruoli non consoni alle sue corde vocali

I just don't get the almost uniform adulation of MdM. His voice was just not beautiful, at least to judge from recordings. Tucker, Svanholm, Vickers and a few others were clearly superior dramatic tenors, in my opinion.
Corelli beat him to a pulp. This match should have been stopped much earlier. Del Monaco kept getting to his feet only to be pummeled by Corelli. What was the referee listening to? Does someone have to get killed before the state singing commission passes stricter rules?
