Part three of the Addio, Fiorito Asil Cage Match series. I thinks these two singers of had two of the most naturally beautiful lyric tenor voices in recorded history. Although they are a generation apart, I find this match pretty even. Enjoy!
1. Beniamino Gigli, 1940
2. Luciano Pavarotti, 1974

Two different men and two sublime voices. I just thank God I lived in a time when I could hear them both.

Both wonderful. Gigli's timbre is ravishing,the voice is beautifully produced, but some of the mannerisms are a bit annoying. Pav's tone is fresh, brillant and beautiful. His delivery is more sincere than Gigli's.

@MsRuthes I agree, but the order is: Caruso first, Gigli, Bjoerling, Corelli and the rest. All dilettatanti should learn to taste them all, enjoying them to the full and put them in that order, otherwise, there is a problem with their taste.

Gigli for expression (occasionally too self-indulgent), Pavarotti for a purer line and a more secure top.

Gigli's voice is deep and expressive. I don't feel that while listening to Pavarotti's rendition.

Предпочитаю вариант Corelli, вообще-то ) Затем - Caruso. Потом - Bjorling, MDM.. По данному баттлу - странный вопрос, надо сказать. Gigli, of course. Надо быть совсем уж глухим, чтоб не признать данного факта. Его исполнение намного четче, сильнее и качественнее исполнения Pav. У Pav вообще здесь голос какой-то глухой и размытый. И вибрато - непривычное

Not a fair comparison. The Pavarotti recording is much/much/much more ambient with a slight echo etc. I like both though, each are different

Gigli won, but if a 1965-76 Pavarotti would have sung this, he could have won easily, I put that Pavarotti up against everybody

Gigli had the more beautiful voice, Pavarotti had the better top. Both have wonderful fraseggio so that one's a hit or miss. I'm going to give Gigli the slight edge here, because this actually a role he could sing (he did sing the role I think?), whereas this role is too big for Pavarotti's voice.

Gigli by far over Pavarotti, both here and in anything I have heard. Pav "covers" the F's much too much, taking away all the tenorial thrill, IMO, and is boring.

To me Pavarotti seems to have a much sweeter flow of feeling throughout and the tones seem to float with ease and stability.

No comparison. Gigli is the best. I would put a few tenors ahead of Pav. Gigli is only challenged by Caruso and Bjorling.

E Adventures In sames Óperas Del Mônaco is The Best. Exemple.La Força Del Destino, Il Trovador, Otello and others. For me Gigle e Plácido Domingo em Aída. Di Stefano em La Gioconda, Lá Boehme, Rigoletto and others. Ferruchio Tagliavine com a Callas na Luccia de Lammemour. And Plácido Domingo in Lohengrin.? A Cavalleria Rusticana é boa com todos, but The Record Wish Bjorling, Tebaldi and Basttianini is The Best.

I prefer Gigli's version over Pavarotti's. Orchestration has over powered Pav's voice and slow tempi is unproductive. More evenly balanced on Gigli's rendition. Sorry I can't decide on the voice alone.
@rainking61
@rainking61 15 лет назад
if by reserved you mean Pavarotti doesn't oversing, then maybe you are right (I see you liked the Corelli best, rexeterna). Pavarotti doesn't need to ever muscle anything in this passage. The clear, perfectly spinning tone is full of sincere emotion. I prefer Pavarotti's vibrato to Corelli's.

@@Domani02 The earlier Pavarotti is without doubt better than the later version. His voice was more beautiful and his style purer. But what a great singer! As was Gigli, although aspirates and interruptions of the pure singing line became more noticeable as he got older. Again, the younger Gigli was better than the later version!

neither of these really does it for me.. they both seem too reserved--this really is the one time pinkerton shows any kind of true unbridled emotion in the entire opera, so i think it really needs to be big and all out there. they're both too reserved..

one can habitually hear an old gigli recording and not be 100% positive who the singer is - this NEVER happens when hearing Pav - is such distinctness of sound necessarily a good thing? And is it likely that one may not be as certain w/ Gigli because the recording technique in his day was so inferior as to eliminate sounds that make a voice unique? How can anyone ever compare caruso/gigli vs bjoerling/corelli/Pav when the playing field (i.e. recording technique) is so categorically different?
