Why do so many people assume that Amyntas was a weak person? He'd probably never actually been King himself and had no reason to resent Phillip taking the throne. Alexander was given special training and promotion but Philip seems to have had some regard for Amyntas. He appointed Amyntas to important diplomatic missions and perhaps as one of the commanders of the advance force to Asia Minor. It looks as if Philip was preparing Amyntas as a backup heir in case Philip and Alexander died.
