I truly don't believe he cared much about his family at that point. He had like 3 or 4 by the time of his death and had no plans to return to Macedon any time soon. He knew Carthage and Syracuse were still prizes he could capture and he would have wanted to raise Rome when he came into contact with them. There's no version of his life where he doesn't die either on the battlefield or in between campaigns. He was obsessed on the same level as Caesar or Ghengis.
