I have a few pairs of Loake 1880s (a step down from the Export Grade line) and one pair of C&J benchgrades. There's a definite quality gap between the two brands although whether it justifies the price differential is an open question. I do think C&J tends to trade a lot on their reputation. There are better value alternatives now offering similar or better standards of workmanship and style for keener prices. That said, of all the well-established English shoemakers at this level, I think C&J does offer the most elegant lasts. They're much more sleek and contemporary than your average Loake, Barker, Church or Cheaney shoe.

Just got a pair of CJ Hallams and as a first time buyer of CJ (prior to this was Barker), the second I tried them on in store I was so impressed they feel amazing and the leather was more supple and less plasticky than Barker yet the overall shoe felt way more solid.

Love the detailed and nuanced review on these shoes. I agree with you that, at the end of the day, the purchase decision will be down to the aesthetics and individual comfort given that the quality on these 2 is so similar.

Am I seeing things or is there edge setting on the outsole of the Loake shoe? It looks like you can see the wire running the length top and bottom? If so... dang! Nice touch.

I’m a size 10.5 EEE in Alan Edmonds. Which other brand sells the equivalent of AE EEE ? Most high end brands don’t seem to sell a wide last, can you give me some guidance, please

Loake, Crockett and Jones, Alden, Cheaney, Church’s, Meermin, Carmina, TLB and Trickers all have some in wide sizes. You may have to go to a 10W to be sure. Generally the G width in UK sizes is similar to EEE. There is an H width too but it’s pretty rare. With Carmina, TLB and Meermin they rarely stock them and you either pay the extra to customize or you have to search the GMTOs for when wide sizes come up. The English brands will do limited runs, usually in the basics like black cap toes etc but if you want something else you also have to call one of their company owned stores and ask for a special order. In the handwelt arena Heinrich Dinkelacker Buda, Luzern and Rio lasts are all EEE. Yeossal and Oct Tenth offer wide sizes as part of the MTO if I recall. I’ve never seen wide sizes with Enzo Bonafe but I’d be shocked if they wouldn’t do it. Vass has some wide sizes on their website but I’d ask there as well. In the high end most of the shoes are made to order. So if you’re looking at Paolo Scafora, Stefano Bemer, Norman Vitalle, Saint Crispins, Acme, John Lobb, Gazino and Girling or Edward Green they may make a shoe in a wide or narrow size. Most of these I’m sure about but Lobb and Green I haven’t seen it to be sure. Many also have made to measure where they take your measurements and apply an existing pattern to a last made for your feet. This isn’t bespoke, it’s only for shoes they’ve already got patterns for. Many makers in all three categories also make bespoke shoes if you desire it. There are options. Unlike AE, it’s rarely in stock so you’re waiting... and paying full freight since MTO is usually an up charge (30% is normal although some brands like Normal Villalta charge €300) over list and rarely, if ever, is on sale.

I really polish every 4-5 wears. When my collection was smaller I did every 5-7. I will occasionally touch up in between.

At various stores they have samples and you can often see that on factory tours but I’ve never done a side by side. A couple cobblers out of Nashville have a channel Trenton & Heath where they’ll dissect shoes.

I asked Crockett and jones and they said all the non black leather shoes are veg tanned, loake said their shoes are all chrome tanned.

Interesting. We’re you specifically asking about the upper leather? The Loake website specifically says the export grade has veg tanned leather for linings and the heel stack. If the uppers are chrome tanned then they age much nicer than other box calf I’ve seen. Good to know. Thanks!
