I was a regular at Elizabeth near the end. I can remember being rung up to join a protest for its closure. Made many friends. Moved onto cycling after skating.
Yes, there was a great community linked to the rink (no rhyme intended). I believe there are plans to build an Ice Skating Rink across from that odd multi-level carpark on Main North Road, next to Fremont Park I think
Hi mate back in the 80s my band Parallel Lines was asked to play at down town roller rink while the kids skated around. We didn't get much money but was given a big bag of tokens to play on the games. Heaps of fun and great memories.👍🏻
Yeah roller skating ring starting to shut down as I when I became a teenager in 1997. I Remember when I was in primary school, the kids at school use to talk about the one on the city and how they wanted to go there as roller skating was still very popular till the internet came out in house holds in 1997. I remember going to the one on maxwell road at pooraka and I went there for a New Year’s Day special for my birthday
Many a night I spent at the Elizabeth rink gosh if they made one I would go again don't know how long I would stay upright but it would be worth the fun
I didn't know that. I tried to google, but couldn't find any info. Do you know anything about its history? Cheers for watching Andrew, much appreciated 🙏🍷
They all began to close down as I got older, and by then I felt I was too old to skate anyway, but is wasn't all doom and gloom for Elizabeth, they had TimeZone.
Yes, there's always something new to fill any void. So many Elizabethen Skaters loved the rink so much because it was purpose built for them especially. It was theirs and gave them a real sense of community and belonging. The Rink was only the second building to be built in the town centre in November 1959, after Hotel Elizabeth in August 1957. Both were closed and demolished in the eighties.
They have escape park for scooters and skateboards. If the councils can give that opportunity to them , why can't the councils consider just doing a big slab of concrete and call it public Skating.
