On this week’s episode (by popular demand!) is Dr. Sandra Kooij, a Dutch psychiatrist researching the relationship between hormones and ADHD. Dr. Kooij’s October webinar with ADHD Europe on the topic did not disappoint, and we talk about her life’s work in this can’t-miss episode.
From what she calls “danger week” (the week before your period) to post-partum and (peri)menopause, Dr. Kooij totally gets it, and hearing her talk about her research is fascinating. Dr. Jooij treated women with ADHD for more than 25 years, and for the past 20 years she’s been studying adult ADHD as the head of the Adult ADHD Program of PsyQ in the Netherlands. #adhd #adhdhormones #teamadhd #askadhd #adhdwomen

The reason some of us try to find supplements to help as opposed to real treatment is because mental Healthcare is an absolute crapshoot in the US. Many psychiatrists aren't seeing new patients. Ones that are, are booked several months out. ADHD consults can cost $1000+ out of pocket, assuming they do the assessment at all. Some of us can't tolerate hormonal birth control or SSRIs... the list goes on

Yes to all of this.

Exactly. I have spent many hours searching for a psychiatrist who does ADHD assessments, and who is covered by my insurance. No luck so far. The one seemingly very good specialist in my area only accepts direct payment, and an assessment starts at $1,600 and is booked 2-3 months out. I can spend that if I must, but most cannot, which is heartbreaking. Currently self-medicating with coffee, for lack of alternatives.

I can vouch for what Dr. Sandra Kooij said. I was diagnosed with ADHD after my second child was born. I again had Postpartum depression, but did not even recognize it. My mentor, Prophet Del Hall who knows me very well urged me to get help and also suspected the ADHD. I saw a counselor who was wonderful and while she was convinced It was only PPD she supported me as I was tested and found another psychologist. I was confirmed to have ADHD, and now am on Adderall which has been life changing. Last year I started medication for PMDD, fluoxetine, which also works so well. My gynecologist prescribes it for me. I never would have suspected the ADHD if it were not suggested to me. These treatments have been nothing short of a miracle, almost like a rebirth. Thank you for this video!

Makes so much sense! Perimenopause over 5 years. PMDD extremely severe since perimenopause making me suicidal each month. All symptoms so severe, found out Peri 1 and a half yrs ago, had to fight for hrt. Found out Autistic last yr, found out ADHD 2 weeks ago. I’m 44. My life is only just starting to make sense. My whole life I’ve had to cope with all this and felt like an alien and a complete failure, not even human. I have endometriosis since age 13 (doctors told me pain in my head for 11 years). My bowel and bladder now stuck to my uterus from endometriosis and Adenomyosis. Knowing all this, knowing now I’m ADHD I feel so much like I now need to try and shift from hating and blaming myself to being kind to myself because I should have had support in my life instead of being so alone and suffering for all these years. Thank you so much for this. I’m on Oestrogel, Testosterone gel and progesterone. PMDD still bad but hoping for total hysterectomy and bowel and bladder treatment then will continue HRT so hopefully will stop the cycles and PMDD adversely affecting my ADHD.

I'm right there with you! Severe endometriosis all my life, finally affected my lungs and I was getting punctured lung with my cycles! Had to have my ovaries removed to stop it, and the ADHD reared its head in the ensuing years. I'm 61 now and just started amphetamines last year. They help a lot, but not enough. I'm asking my GYN to up the dose of my hormone replacement. Good luck to you.

I had bad side effects from SSRIS and from the birth control pill Yaz which made all my hair fall out and made me more depressed. I am only 39 so i am not yet menopausal but after reading a lot about the connections between ADHD & PMDD and Estrogen and brain chemistry. I pushed my Doctor to allow me to try HRT. For the last few years I have been using Transdermal Bio-identical Estrogen patches along with cyclical Micronised oral Progesterone. For the this treatment plan has been the game changer i'd been waiting for for over a decade. Right now ive moved to Mexico and my 6 months supply of patches that was the maximum my doctor could prescribe me at one time has run out. Now my only option is to get a pellet. But basically estrogen has done more for me than any other medication i have tried. And it has allowed me to stay on lower doses of psychiatric meds. For the mood lability of ADHD and PMDD i also take 5mgs of Memantine which has been shown in studies to help with moods. i find it much better than SSRIs because it hasnt given me all the nasty side effects.

I have PMDD and adhd taking estrogen therapy exacerbated these symptoms. Taking progesterone has greatly helped improve my symptoms. No to SSRI'S

Why did no one tell me this!!!! This seems like something people with ADHD who menstruate should be told around puberty!

I’m definitely noticing a change with my son who is 6 and had adhd. I’m trialing giving him progesterone and it’s calming him down and helping him a lot.

Anyone know where the podcast is? Seen it recommended somewhere else but I can’t find it on my phone, just a different one called “Adulting with ADHD” with a journalist called Sarah Snyder

Sorry, I got really confused, the other RU-vidr said it was dr Sandra kooji’s podcast, so I was looking for that on Spotify and confused me because it said same poscast name but Sarah Snyder but I see it is your podcast and I’d gotten really confused! Sorry 😬 🤦🏻‍♀️

What with patients who have endometriosis and PMDD - endometriosis is estrogen dominance- and PMDD is drop of estrogen- this contradicts! Sandra - what is your opinion on this?

.. to help this cost... >> cause>> i just hope no one bringing access needs to the table has to ingest a transcription untrue to its causality. no one ever should have to figure/doubt/double-entendre-guess-work-it out.. the shrek of (shite by auto) digital transcription is far reaching, WORDS matter. Someone deaf from birth should not be served with random soundalike outcomes, distorting the true message. Leave the subtitles out unless you (or the robothmic algoprops entrolled) happen to actually care... a wee word makes a world of a difference!!!

Thank you for the feedback. I will add this to my list. In the meantime, is it better or worse to have the faulty transcription included?

Medical transciptionist of 25 years here. We are becoming extinct, and healthcare providers are being forced to document their own records. They're using speech recognition to save time, understandably, but I see so many critical errors every day. The hospitals don't care, because they want to save money on transcription. Please check your medical records and make a fuss when you find errors! It's literally a life and death matter in some cases. The wrong "wee word" can be devastating. BTW, found out I have ADHD at age 60. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind it's lack of estrogen. I'm asking my GYN for a higher dose of HRT. I had to have my ovaries removed at 50 and was actually diagnosed (incorrectly, thank God) with frontotemporal dementia 2 years ago. Im so grateful for Dr. Kooij for all her work. ❤
