In this episode I chat with ADHD coach Elizabeth Brink about ADHD menopause and hormone therapy for women. Elizabeth discovered she had gone into early menopause after coming off birth control. Rather than planning her third child Elizabeth found herself struggling with an increase of ADHD symptoms.
Diagnosed with ADHD as a child, Elizabeth now helps other ADHD moms learn skills to manage their lives. On Monday, Elizabeth spoke on self-trust at the ADHD Women's Palooza. Catch the replay here: fn101.isrefer.com/go/womenpal... (aff)
Topics: * ADHD * menopause * perimenopause * adult ADHD * motherhood * early menopause * periods * hormones * coping skills * mental health * anxiety * depression * older moms * older parenting

50 year old women are working too. Menopause hits anywhere from 45-55. We are still working and thriving, not even close to retirement. The drop in estrogen is why I was diagnosed with ADHD. I don’t have children so empty nesting wasn’t a factor. The common factor is estrogen loss. I was also misdiagnosed as bipolar for about 10 years but it was undiagnosed ADHD.

Thank you for this candid discussion. I started using estrogen a couple of weeks ago and the difference has been huge. Incidentally my ADHD diagnosis happened just as I was going through (peri)menopause and not because of it. I have not taken any ADHD medication yet. I have to say though that it seems that you are missing an important link in this presentation. Sandra Kooij who is a professor and a psychiatrist treating ADHD has several webinars on RU-vid channels, one of which is ADHD Europe. The link is that Estrogen not only functions as a dopamine like neurotransmitter in the brain but it also affects dopamine synthesis and decreases its degradation, but also up regulates dopaminergic receptors. She has some very good slides to illustrate this connection. There are also results from her smal studies showing that there is an increased prevalence of hormone related symptoms during our cycles, post partum and during (peri)menopause in women with ADHD.

Good information 👍 I just got diagnosed 6 months ago, I'm 59, better late then never and I'm feeling better than I've ever felt on my medication. I raised 4 children divorced remarried all on a brain that struggled every day and beating myself up for not doing better like other mums were doing. I could only cope by just focusing on my babies and their needs so i couldn't work, they are beautiful well adjusted adults now and I'm a lot calmer .My psychiatrist quickly diagnosed me and knew exactly what medication to put me on because of my age .

OMG! Thank you! I am 47 and it's like a switch went off (or on) and it is terrifying when all of these symptoms pop up out of the blue. Diagnosed during covid, it is unbelievable!

I think it's definitely an under-utilized strategy and hope more doctors become more wise to it!

Same here! I’ve been taking the max Adderall for years, but it hasn’t been working and I’m exhausted, brain fog, have no motivation, etc.

I took loOvral for decades, even after menopause. Thank heavens I did! I had more peri symptoms in my forties, ike increasing vag dryness; night sweats, where I'd need to change clothes and the sheets. I'm so glad you're discussing this now. Like every ADHD woman, I wish I'd have been exposed to these kind of discussions then. It's horrible feeling like you alone are dealing with these things. I luckily charted my lunar cycles with my periods. Thank you!

I'm so sensitive to synthetic hormonal treatment. It actually makes me depressed. I ended up seeing a medical herbalist who has helped balance hormones with herbs rather than hrt/the CP.

I'm so lost. I'm 53 have ADHD on HRT and I'm a mess....I used to have a really sharp brain but not now. I think I'm really sensitive to natural progesterone. What are some of you taking? I want to stop taking oral progesterone as i think it may be making me depressed...is an IUD better for the progestin component? I don't want to live like this and I'm a single mum to a 12 year old ADHD girl.

how are you doing? are you better? do you do any special diet? have you tried internment fasting? i have four kids, 4,7,9,11. i am 45 and my life has been getting hard to manage gradually since my 36, these last two years accelerated in a lot the memory loss and anxiety, i know many of us face it alone because as adhd it is hard for me to make friends as i have been fixated in taking care of my family you are not alone this phase will pass and we will find ways to cope sending you love ❤ ps i take amberen advanced menopause relief and every other day opill and i use premarin cream, it took the edge off as i reduced carbs to lettuce, berries, i do high fats and protein, when i cheat and eat processed foods takes me days to recover from the mental fog. i added vitmain d and snake juice, i also take 30mg adderall generic and started taking brakc and green teas as coffee makes me sick. i added agua kefir and other fermented foods and after 8 years gaining weight i started to lose and low dose progesterone from the pill helps me to sleep, as i had insomnia my whole life. i walk daily and count steps. i hope it helps.
