The struggle is real. I'm a 52 year old woman recently diagnosed with ADHD and the only reason I qualified is because I was diagnosed as a child with 'minimal brain dysfunction' back in the day when it was very rare to diagnose a girl with it and assumed children outgrew it. I didn't outgrow it and now I am suffering the cumulative and delayed consequences of never receiving proper treatment for it.

I dropped out of uni two times. I had great difficulty with starting to work on an assignment and later to do the exams. I also got bored with it in the end. I also lost every job I ever had because after a while I would get bored with it and start to be late at work. It's like all the other people would get better with time. But I would be excited and fully into it when I start something but then when I learned how it works I get bored. It's driving me nuts sitting there wasting my lifetime. Of hardly ever finished anything of great value in my life. As child I was the lonely introverted kid. I had one friend - that's it. I was mobbed from time to time but tried to keep a low profile so they would pick someone else. In school I would stare out of the window - even I was sitting in the first row. I parents always told me I am very lazy and I need to do homework and stuff. I had a hard time to understanding how being social works. All these other kids met up in big groups and seemed to have a natural understanding of these group dynamics. I had terribly low self-esteem - actually I still have low self-esteem. This gave me a hard time with girls. I was failing all their stupid tests because I would answer honest and self-critical. It was a matter of good behavior not to lie to a person I was interested in. Yeah, this doesn't work. With 28 I started to learn how to get better with women. I got addicted to picking up chicks. It would give me instant revards like a computer game and I loved it. I found a glitch in the matrix - a way to get lots of sex for free with all of these girls. My self esteem also went up. But then I realized I never had a real relationship and girls don't seem to consider me for this. Also I don't get relationships - I don't really get it emotionally why people choose each other. Being with this one person - as amazing as this person might be - for years and in an ideal way forever sounds scary to me. But I got a lot better in sozial situations. I can pass as an extrovert for a good amount of time as long as people don't spend too much time with me. I am completely time blind. Means I know how to schedule things - better than most people - because I have tried alot - but I fail with the execution 2-3 days in good times 2-3 weeks down the road. It's like I completely forget about these plans and my focus is now on something else. I was always like this. My half brother was normal - he had his own struggles sure, but he had normal person struggles. I always felt like an alien, like I am missing some important key aspect of life to really understand why people choose to do what they do. I manouvered myself into debt in my 20s and even I tried to be more self aware with money in my 30s I still just forget to pay recurring bills like gym memberships. I also forget about coffee cups I used. They are standing around everywhere. I'm just forgeting about it. And I was addicted to coffee too. I would drink up to 10 cups because it would help me to get stuff done. But then it would fuck up my sleep schedule big time. In general I have a hard time to maintain a sleep schedule I have the feeling I tend to be awake during the night and get sleepy during the day. I hate hierarchies or authorities. I not the person who tries to overthrow the leader and take his place I would just start to protest by working really slow. This is huge problem in a workplace. I've come across ADD a few days ago and it's intressting how much of this describes my life experiences. I went to psychologists before for anxiety and depression but they never gave me a real diagnosis or mentioned ADD. I never considered it because I thought that is the hyperactive kids disability. Kids are noisy - I hate them. Well, I don't really hate them but they are noisy and a pain in the ass. I really consider ADD right now. It would make so much sense.

This is great! I’m not alone! I when you mentioned about friendships, that was something I resonate with. I have always been more passionate in my friendships and never forged those deep friendships(from my perspective). Deep and meaningful conversations are another one! I typically seem to become antagonistic or breed debate in conversations because the same old small talk is very boring! Sensitivity is another one, overthinking another, lose interest or give up quickly, the list goes on… basically it’s nice to know we aren’t alone but getting a diagnosis is difficult in the nhs

Thank you so much for sharing your story, resonated with so much of it. I'm 40 and my 'mid life crisis' has been discovering I have ADHD. In the process of getting a diagnosis but I don't need it. I've never resonated so much or had my brain/way thinking and operating expianed so well. I'm absolutely typical ADHD. Have spent 2 years hyperfocusing on learning everything I can about it and now find myself spotting others a mile off. It's been such an emotional, self analysing, enlightening time. And also realising how much of myself I have masked to fit in and now rediscovering the real me. These conversations are so important to hear and such a reassurance there's others out there that totally get the daily struggles (and the hilarious moments- I'm grateful to my ADHD for the entertainment)

Due to my issues, I was once diagnosed with being bipolar. I had generalized anxiety (probably because of ADD) and my Dr. put me on Paxil. The Paxil ended up making me manic. Then I crashed into a major depression. I went to a psychiatrist and they decided I was Bipolar and put me on Depakote which was horrible (My mind started Fking around with me) After about a year, I had an appointment with the psychiatrist and she was an hour behind. After about 45 minutes a thought came into my head "there's nothing wrong with me" I walked out and never went back. I stopped taking the Depakote. SInce I was off all medication, I went back to normal and just dealing with ADD. I was seeing a CBT for a bit and that helped. All of this was about fifteen years ago. Now I'm finding that it was all because I had undiagnosed Inattentive ADHD.
@serinachase6996
@serinachase6996 4 года назад
I was finally diagnosed with inattentive type about a month ago, and when he was talking about how he isn't really into the parties/gatherings because he isnt really into the small talk type stuff, I really related to that. Just went to a bon fire the other night with a a few friends and their friends. And, I felt like I just couldnt connect with the anyone there because there was so much going on and I just couldnt follow along with all of their conversations. Anyways, I ended up making a fool of myself with my awkward one word answers and not knowing how to answer some questions. Honest to god, I really did try to follow along with everything, but I just couldn't. I wasn't trying to, but I'm sure I seemed really standoffish.. and maybe kind of dumb. Having adhd as an adult really is way worse than I ever thought, because the social anxiety that comes with it is the worst. I really wish that I could just be normal at parties and like ..talk to people?? How is it so natural to other people?!
@TheJaerff
@TheJaerff 4 года назад
I'm the same way. At my last fire, a friend and I talked mental health for like, 3 hours straight. Had it not been for that, I probably wouldn't have been engaged with the other stuff going on, or it wouldn't have felt all that genuine. I've been trying to work on being ok with just being there and enjoying whatever comes with the environment; The fire, my vape, my drink, the breeze. You can try to see the chatty people in the group as a relief from having to take the wheel, rather than looking to it as enviable. Having those around you with that untethered ability to mingle in that sense, is kinda perfect, because it frees you up to have limited expectations of yourself, and you can focus your resources on just being comfortable in your skin as a fly on the wall, enjoying some R&R in good company. When you finally emerge into the conversation, it'll be authentic and you won't feel like a 'fraud', which may allow you to give yourself the credit you need to stay engaged or the credit to keep soakin it in. I don't know ya, but I think you'd be fun to chat with around a fire 🤟

i’m lucky in that i’m well spoken and i’m a social butterfly. i constantly have shit to say and a quick mind with humour. but it took a lot of failure to get fluent with it. lots of people have called me annoying, but i learnt when to speak and when not to speak and that helped. learnt how to listen as well, though i’m very inconsistent at that. i’m just constantly searching for a more interesting conversation though, most of the time trying to bring them up myself.

I always felt like my body somehow stops me from doing what I'm meant to do in the world... it is like a prison really. I am highly creative and now I get why... instant product... Musik ... I guess having musik, painting would be enough but I am also addicted to friendships but yet I cant care enough for them... If I would be not pretty faced , plus the brightness, I would have been diagnosed, medicated, and I would feel less lost in the last 20 years... I was a nice, pretty wild child who is just lazy, fun, crazy and rebellious when in fact I was just masking, felt shamed for my clumsiness,4 my silly, excited talk, I was hiding a lot in my shell fearing rejections but came out when I recharged... i guess You people in similar shoes, know exactly this...

different drugs are so easy for my adhd brain to fall in love with. whatever stimulates, and whatever’s easy on my stomach. ciggies and alcohol aren’t good in the stomach, but weed.... Weed makes my brain so buzzy and filled with random shit which is very nice, very stimulated. it was better once i learned how to calm the crazy thoughts down. it makes my stomach numb and gives me munchies, super good for weight gain which i desperately need. but addiction didn’t take too long to take hold. for 5 months i did it with breaks in between, but then for the next 6 months i had no breaks, and had to quit with the most shit withdraw. the smoke ruined my voice a little bit, which sucks because singing is my greatest talent. it’s getting better at least. it was a great fucking time but i’m not getting to that point again. weed is a tool, i’m not.

Yeah consistent weedsmoking swallowed 8-10 years of my life and I, in some ways, feel less mature now at 27 than I was a decade ago... 🙈 I was so quick and smart when I was around 18, but i'm such a slow thinker now, even months after having cut ties with smoking... I loved drawing when smoking but it quickly made me more lazy than creative, so I almost haven't been drawing for the past 5 years tho i've done it my whole life up until then.... I allowed toxic relationships to stay in my life for yeaaars at a time and my voice is so hard to work with as well now! 😧 So, you were really clever to realise what was going on with you after such short time! And I hope you'll get your great voice back! ^^👌

I'm not convinced that America is handling ADHD better than the UK. It wasn't until undiagnosed ADHD got the best of me and I wound up homeless and on Medicaid when it was finally diagnosed. Leading up to my current circumstances I had a decent career with the same company for 15 years and the same CBT therapist for 10 years. It is also estimated that 25% to 40% prison population suffers from ADHD and approximately 24% of Americans will experience at least one bout with homelessness.

@@ADHDMastery wasn't meaning to be disrespectful by any means....I love your channel and the things you have spoke about. I've been recently diagnosed at 41 last week and am adjusting with my meds. I just couldn't keep up with the slowness of your guest.

I can barely sustain my excitement for when you put yourself out there like this to raise awareness and help others, wow, your interview is going to be biblical, especially when you entertain us all with your hyperactive cartwheeling and lack of professionalism throughout! Moving on....

@@LM-ht7sd 1.5 or even twice speed is amazing if temp is far too slow. You adjust to it quite easily.
