My favorite is when you are super proud of how “well” you’ve been doing at a job and how much you care about it genuinely and you try your absolute hardest and be nice to everyone at work and then for some reason your mind can’t remember to do one or two things and now everyone hates you and you thought you were a great employee.

I had this experience last week and it was absolutely the worst. And even when at USAFA, I experienced it a little. Not fun. I give my all and pride myself in doing my work well and treating others with love and respect and striving for excellence. But, there are SMALL details that I missed, here and there, and after a few months those small details here and there sometimes build up and in any other field it would not be that big of a deal and then you could just learn from them. But in accounting, it's quite annoying because that can be hundreds of thousands of dollars that you have to sift through to try to get the customer to pay a check on because you missed the detail or something and it's over something that is so simple and not necessarily (ultimately) my fault because something slipped my attention. And it's annoying because, as you said, it seems those immediately over you are annoyed and feel you're doing something morally wrong just because you made a *simple* mistake. Annoying af

I've recently lost a job because of my ADHD/ADD, and to be frank it's made me realize that I need to do something that I'm actually passionate about in order to stay focussed and interested in my job. With that in mind I went out to find a new job where I can blur the lines with my love for plants, and now I'm not only thoroughly enjoying the new job that I've got.. I'm also not getting bored along the way. I take a bit longer to learn new things in comparison to my co-workers, but because I'm passionate about plants I already know a shit ton of things that most of my co-workers don't know. My passion for plants is compensating for the ADHD/ADD. Heck, my impulsiveness and enthusiasm is actually HELPING me to approach customers and get work done. My advice won't come as a surprise... Find something you're passionate about, and try your best to turn that into your job.
@falkharvard8722
@falkharvard8722 4 года назад
Apply the love you have for plants to your own garden, speak to neighbours or friends about your ideas. I wanted to create wildlife habitats and food abundant areas, my employer wanted me to just obediently cut grass for 6 months. Since parting ways and doing my own thing, I have built orchards, a mini nursery to grow and sell plants, wetland development and I am now creating a forest on wasteland. Get your day job done as best you can but find some work for evenings/weekends that will allow your wonderful ADHD brain to get the nourishment it needs - creativity and variety. Best of luck, my green fingered friend 👍

1. YES, find work that is rewarding to you, it is critical for anyone with ADHD to find something about their work that motivates them. 2. Even if you find work you're passionate about, it is very important that you plan in advance how to talk to your employers on days when ADHD gets in the way, know your rights, always actively work on discovering your needs, your triggers, and your rights. I've got a long story, but figured that people with ADHD coming to this page should see it. TL;DR version is that I was fired from my dream job that I was extremely interested in and passionate about, and had a great work environment that I was able to excel in, where my ADHD really made me an excellent, above and beyond employee. I was fired because I sought advice from HR to make up for time I had to take off for doctor's appointments, which spiralled into a toxic workplace of micromanagement and where I was unable to do any of the things that had helped me get through the work day. .. .. .. .. .. My story: My last job was my dream job. I was at a world renowned organization working with extremely accomplished and brilliant individuals, I was being recognized for my efforts, was trusted with responsibilities, got to explore my own curiosities, made enough money to pay my bills and go out or travel every now and then, my work was meaningful to my personal values, the tasks were hands on, I was respected, I could see myself doing it for the rest of my life and was trying to find out how I could make that happen. After about a year and a half of working there, my issues with sleep and lethargy at home were impacting my ability to be a good housemate, a good girlfriend, a good daughter, and eventually I came into work clearly exhausted. My boss who had just been diagnosed with his own sleep disorder was empathetic and encouraged me to get medical advice for my sleep. After consulting with my doctor and setting up a series of appointments and tests, I needed to talk with HR about taking time off work for doctor's appointments. My workplace had previously been flexible enough that, so long as I was meeting overall deadlines and completing my work, that it didn't matter if I needed to go on a few walks or take extra time at lunch or come in late/leave late. Once HR got involved and found out I had ADHD, I was suddenly being micromanaged, which spiralled into being fired (illegally according to 2 lawyers, my doctor, and therapist, though I made the personal choice not to sue my former employer, mostly because I was too broke at that point to focus on anything other than getting back on my feet). I was being given additional tasks that my coworkers didn't need to do to prove that I was getting work done (suddenly my boss was watching me like a hawk, suddenly I was being scolded for being on my phone even if I was checking work emails or researching something work related, suddenly I couldn't stay late to make up for lost time, suddenly I was asked to write daily progress emails that MUST be sent before 5pm, and I was in trouble if I sent emails after 5 pm, even if I was doing a work related time-sensitive task that couldn't be held off to send the email). I was being held to a standard that none of my coworkers were being held to, and because I was so stressed about checking all these new boxes, and because I couldn't go on walks, and because my productivity was being measured by the hour or by the minute instead of by the week, all the systems I had in place to be the brilliant, above and beyond, multi-tasking employee I always was, fell apart. My boss grew so resentful of me that he started compiling a list of all the "safety standards" I was violating (and these were "safety" standards that were previously described to me as "a waste of time" by the same boss, who frequently violated them too. But I'm talking small, inconsequential. Imagine if, starting tomorrow, you found out that you would be pulled over by the police if you drove so much as under 49 mph or over 51 mph in a 50mph zone, while everyone around you drove 55-60mph. Even if you're fine with being slow, it's a hazard to be more concerned with the speedometer than the road). I begged for a different system, begged for flexibility, even asked HR to call my therapist so that my therapist could explain why the micromanagement was hindering my ability to do my job. I had been receiving so much praise from my coworkers and supervisors, was being trained for a new position, and I had a doctor's note from my primary care provider explaining that my performance was being impacted by changes in my antidepressant medication, my sleep, as well as my ADHD. My boss even knew that I was not a citizen of the country I was working in, that I only had a year left on my visa, that I had no family, that I didn't have much for savings (this was an entry level position) that we lived in a small town composed of mostly only employees at my workplace, that I was in the deep pits of depression of anxiety and grieving the loss of a family friend at home and also going through a breakup, that I LIVED with my coworkers. Knew that I was recovering from a bad case of the flu and bronchitis, and had just (the day before I was fired) needed an ambulance called at my workplace (about 8 witnesses) while suffering a severe, 8 hour panic attack (my first ever). They even told me that the next step would be going from full time to part time, but instead they blindsided me. Fired me 3 weeks before christmas. Nearly a year later, I am getting back on my feet, but I had a strong support system through my family and friends. The lesson that I learned was that when you start to feel like disclosing ADHD is causing you employers to treat you differently from your coworkers, DO NOT BE A PEOPLE PLEASER, DO NOT APOLOGIZE, ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF. I was told that what happened was illegal by lawyers I spoke with through a free resource for low income unemployed women, but I think that the descent into the retaliatory behaviour happened because I was new to my ADHD diagnosis, didn't know how to explain it, didn't know what would work for me or make things better, and I allowed myself to be bullied and set up for failure. Anyone who is in this position, I STRONGLY advise you to find a local resource knowledgeable about employment and disability rights to help walk you through this process, and do it the SECOND things don't feel right, don't wait. Get everything in writing. To anyone who read all the way through, I imagine you only did because you relate. Please do reach out to me.

It takes me a long time to grasp new concepts. Lots of repetition as you mentioned! I have been fired from a temp job before after 5 days because I couldn’t complete tasks quickly enough! Aahhh the struggle! 🙈😫😂😂

June Stay hi, I feel for you I’ve had the exact same issues! I can’t get assessed on NHS in the south where I live and definitely can’t afford to go private. How would a company even help you if you explained your difficulties with learning new concepts or remembering things? (You May have explained but haven’t finished video yet) I feel like my only option is to become self employed as I’m too anxious about my abilities which is upsetting as I’m actually bright but just struggle with things other people find super easy 😕.

@@charlieb9144 I'd recommend not worrying too much about getting diagnosed/ treated etc. It won't really change anything unless you were after medication, which only helps so much. Just try to learn as much as you can about it, manage it, and adapt. You'll be ok. And yes something you're interested in will help
@zoeg1667

If you can swing it,I recommend getting the diagnosis. It allows you to have that official answer, ok longer hanging over your head. From there you can figure out your own path (therapy, medication, CBT, etc.) Most adults have already internalized their coping mechanisms, but it's always nice to know your Comorbidities (anxiety, depression,etc) dont need to be treated in a potentially harmful way. It also gives you the medical papers, and from THERE you have a choice. Its just... a pain in the arse to find someone who does the testing.

Thank you for this video. I don't ever want to use my ADHD as an excuse, and I really strive to keep up with everyone else. I just started a new job in a different career, and previously I had been able to go off of my medication because I had mastered the job. However, I have been struggling so hard since I started this job, so I am going back on it this week. But I got in trouble for a careless mistake I made yesterday and not being able to multitask like the job demands and it just really makes me feel like I am stupid and not good enough. I wasn't diagnosed until I was an adult, and so most of my life I just felt like I just couldn't get it. I always felt stupid, and it is hard to remember that although it is not an excuse, that I need to have compassion for myself while I try to find the right way to overcome the obstacle. I just end up being very angry at myself.

Same I get frustrated, angry, and depressed about my ADHD. I feel like I'm behind in life but, at the same time my girlfriends tell me I am smart for not having a kid. I am pretty good with money and have the inattentive type. Mostly I have trouble with time, keeping everything together mentally/physically, not losing things, and some things I learn faster than others like general math but, memorizing things is a challenge. I have to keep notepads take notes during training and when learning new machines, software, or new tasks otherwise, when I get overwhelmed or stressed at work I may forget a step when I haven't done it in awhile especially.

Maybe that is something we all experience, when we find ourselves in new work environments. Even when in the same general field of work. I recently worked at a job for one month, but had to quit because it was beyond unbearable. There was a coworker going behind me pointing out simple mistake I was making. It made me overly cautious and self conscious in making mistakes, during the training process. Eventually I could not sleep at night or eat properly. I am undiagnosed, but have had symptoms all my life. Prior to quitting my last job I was at the same company for 15 years, so I guess I was able to mask the ADHD, so that nobody was aware of it. In a new job, the ADHD was exposed, as I was overwhelmed by learning the ropes. Hope better days have found you.

Talking about emotional disregulation, this video totally made me cry because you made me feel like maybe I’m not a failure after all. I am in a corporate position that requires a lot of responsibility, organization, working memory, stress, and time. I’ve been struggling a lot recently and am now being faced with the possibility of being put on a performance plan (for the first time ever). You hit the nail on the head with all of these, it takes me longer to process information, I have to be told the same thing several times before I learn it, and I’m often the last to understand anything. I honestly just thought maybe I was too stupid to be doing this job (I also struggle with RSD). This video made me realize it’s not just me, it’s not because I’m too stupid. Maybe this role still won’t be the right fit, but that’s not because I’m stupid, slow, a failure or any of the other adjectives I’ve been calling myself lately. Thank you for posting this and doing these posts in general.

I experience this exact thing in the workplace. But the problem is you can’t prove to anyone that the reason why you struggle or seem stupid is because your brain doesn’t programme things properly no matter how much you concentrate or try. I’ve tried taking notes, revising things at home ettc. But people will still get frustrated with you or think your incompetent even if they don’t say it to your face because they haven’t experienced it. It’s very hard to live with it. Once I know what I’m doing I am fine, but others won’t understand why it takes you so long. And you don’t want to say you have adhd because it sounds like a cop out. It’s hard not to get upset about it because your under double the amount of stress because your aware that others notice that you are struggling.

I haven't told about my ADHD at work but I have said that "distractions" help me concentrate better. I listen to RU-vid/music/audiobooks while I work and it often helps me to concentrate on work. I have had some embarrassing situations with that. I was listening to some two hour video and I had to pause it. I left the window open and the CEO marched in and came near my desk where he could definitely see that I had watched half of a long video. Often, I have used music to pace myself or get songs stuck in my head to get things memorized and done in order. I think that those combined with hyperfocus on one person at a time were why i enjoyed working in emergency medical services and why i really want to return to that same job after being off 2 years for a bunch of surgery, but work gaps are being a real hindrance in finding paid employment. A more current issue I am experiencing with ADHD is returning to the office after having worked from home. My performance had definite improvement working from home since I can control my environment. My job decided it was time for everyone to return to the office on occasion, and those weeks are so hard. It's noisy, people constantly interrupting for chit-chat because they can complete their work faster so have more free time. I need every moment of the day to get the same amount of work done and I take a while to get into focus when I have to switch tasks suddenly. I even wear headphones so I can't hear others, which helps with general noise, but people will still come up and tap me on the shoulder to talk about something non-work related and I get stuck wasting even more time than ADHD makes me waste... my manager is cool about it cause he sees me working hard, but I know at the end of the day if I want raises/promotions I have to have the stats/metrics to back up my worth and being in office is killing those numbers for me.

But when I'm there, even when I turn my sight away from the rest and use earplugs AND noise cancelling headphones with music on, people would still randomly talk to me and not even notice I don't even perceive their presence. Then at a later time I'd get asked about what they told me and I'd be confused... Yeah dude I'm here to do my job and do everything I need to stay focused and avoid distraction. While I lost only one job in my 52 years of working, I did change jobs frequently, just always hating what I was doing. Working Customer Service at Walmart was one of the absolutely worst nightmares because---well, it's customer service, and my very short temper fuse was constantly being lit. I could go into a lot more, but one of the things I have to overcome with this is my tendency to talk too much, so I'll leave it there, other than to say that having been forced into retirement at the age of 64 was the best thing that could have happened....I no longer have to endure toxic people in work environments I didn't belong in in the first place.

There's no way in hell that I would ever disclose to my employer or even coworkers that I have ADHD, though I'm sure some of them know that something is wrong with my because I'm slower at most things- it could either help or hurt me but I think it's ultimately best not to say anything.

I was doing lathing and milling work so I had to be very careful. I always had to check everything a gazillion times. I always hated work and also I always hated myself because I suck at it. Constantly doing stupid mistakes, forget where I put tools, accidentally skipping a working step which then forces me to start all over etc. etc. 10 years later I get diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive) and suddenly things make more sense, but it is also more depressing. I always thought I could solve my problem through sheer willpower but this also burned me out. Haven't tried meds yet (not as easy in germany to come by) but I am working on it.

After marrying my wife and being supported in emotional ways that I never had before, I found out I have a REAL dissociation issue. I would estimate I dissociated through 30-50% of my childhood. School and driving in the car w/ family especially. All times I was 'trapped' and unable to escape physically, so I escaped mentally. I was not diagnosed until about a year or two ago at 30. It made everything finally make sense. I still feel broken, but at least not MYSTERIOUSLY broken. I stopped dissociated as my mental health improved. I still HATED my job (Manager, for an introvert... not good) so I moved to a new dept in tech. My actual career goals. I was instantly reminded of everything this video calls out. I hadn't been challenged in the way I am now in a long time. Some of this, I don't feel is my fault, but it's hard to tell w/ ADHD. TLDR: We're behind schedule on the very first big project I'm on and was a key player. It's REALLY demoralizing. I felt I had 'fixed' my life after decades of emotional neglect as a kid and improving my emotional fluency as an adult in a relationship, and now it's these 'basics' of ADHD reality that are coming back to screw me. I find myself dissociating again. I'm wandering around the house unable to focus my eyes and having trouble even recognizing my wife's voice talking to me. (Also WFH even before pandemic and after, which is hard but also nice but also confusing due to that conflict...) I feel like my new boss is slowly becoming increasingly frustrated with me which makes me want to ask even fewer questions but, like you say, I find I am typically the "I WILL HAVE QUESTIONS" guy. I find that it seems like I need to understand things (procedures, operations) at a much higher fidelity to get started than others. Other ppl, I notice, can just learn their little task and get to work. If I try that, I find myself paralyzed. I do 2 out of 5 steps then stop, wondering how does those steps fit into the bigger picture? How can I make a decision on what the right priority or way to handle something is unless I fully understand every single thing that my own task integrates, relies on, and enables upon completion? To me, this is basic stuff. To others, the fact that they don't feel the need to explain all that proves it's "not mission critical" or whatever. So then my questions feel silly and irrelevant, even if they seem critical to me to continue. It's a very challenging dynamic. Wish me luck I guess, lol. I'm already on meds and having this issue. If I'm lucky I'll squeek through this initial challenge and hopefully gain some knowledge about my position on my own over time. Even when I DO ask questions, as usual in life, I find my boss answers them very shallowly. They might help unstick me for THIS particular issue, but do nothing to help me avoid the pitfall in the future. Damn, life is so hard. -__-

Hang in there please. I really like how articulate and perceptive you are. I am 'cloudy' about a lot of things and admire that you are able to express your observations and describe in a way I totally can get.

I am mid 30s and just kinda putting 2 and 2 together on more than likely having ADHD, especially after having my daughter diagnosed with having it. You my friend, are literally the first person I have ever heard/seen that has perfectly explained 100% the struggles, experiences, and feelings I have had. This is so super eye opening as I've always felt like I've never been able or had anyone able to relate to. I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your experiences and making these videos and I look forward to diving in to your other content on your channel 👍

I love your content and find your videos to be very helpful. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD in my thirties after seeking testing due to a lifetime of attention and learning issues. I was also born 2.5 months early and while the adderall hasn't been as much of a life-changer as I was hoping that it would be the diagnosis gave me a some peace of mine and your experiences and coping strategies have been helpful.

I learn faster than "normal" people. I thought this was one of the superpowers of ADHD, apparently not.

Really great insight and very relatable. Best we can do is be self-aware and practice. May we all find something we really like to do, ways to make it work, and if working with others, may they see and appreciate the value we bring.

Currently on a performance improvement plan because of serious time blindness. If my metrics aren't right in a month, I will need to send out more resumes. Feels bad.

My biggest problem in my work life is that I get bored with all my jobs in almost no time. As soon as I get a job, I lose interest in it, start looking for a new one right away, and want to quit. I'm constantly looking for something better, even if I don't know what that 'better' is. Staying engaged and motivated is really hard, especially when working 100% remotely and the days don't really have any structure. I have constant brain fog that makes it hard to learn and concentrate. I have ADD. This really sucks. I hope the medication will soon get will help clear up this mess in my brain.

I think it was on How to ADHD they mentioned that in case you're not comfortable with disclosing your ADHD, you can simply tell them what you need (for example, a desk not facing the window, clear deadlines etc., you can excuse yourself for being blunt and ask them to tell you, stuff like that). Even if they're super understanding, the first thing an employer/supervisor will likely ask is "ok, what does it mean for you?" Because my ADHD isn't the same as yours. I don't think I disclosed my ADHD in my current workplace and I don't think I have to (right now). Everything is going pretty smoothly so far so that's nice (even though I've only been in for a few weeks). A nice part is that it's a new job in this workplace so I can fill in much of my work myself still. Good luck and may your beard soon return!
