In this episode of Between 2 Shoes we dive into the Adidas Prime X Strung vs. the Adidas Prime X 2 Strung. Are two plates better than none? Is more stack in the forefoot a good thing? And how much does weight impact our feelings toward these max’d out trainers? We get into it.

I have all three versions, the weight and the price play a big factor but the Prime X2 is WAY more stable and for that reason alone it makes the shoe feel 1,000 better than version 1 for me. Also the weight isn't nearly as apparent on foot than picking it up with your hands. For me the Prime X 2 is the perfect steady long run trainer with the best impact protection that feels bouncy and not mushy. I wouldn't use neither of them for raceday since the adios pro exists but I would choose version 1 strung if I had to race in one (only for the weight). The Prime X2 is for shoe nerds and high mileage runners that need protection. If you have the money and stability is an issue in the v1, I would upgrade to version 2 without thinking it twice.

I think this is the third time I thought “I wonder how these two shoes compare” and you guys did a Between 2 Shoes with that exact comparison. Wild.

I have the OG Prime X and the new X2 strung. Love them both! I had no issues with the OG but X2 is way more stable! Absolutely loving them!

PXS v1 has been my favorite road running shoe since it came out last year and I have multiple pairs (hoarded when Adidas had their 50%-off sale) with over 1,000 miles on them. I got really excited by the hype on v2 after TRE late last year and then was let down by the weight gain and all the negative reviews from the early adopters who snagged their pairs from the "leak launch" in early-August. I decided to wait for the white colorway and see what the initial reactions were like but I knew I was going to get it no matter what. Maybe it was due to the letdown and greatly lowered expectations, but the weight gain wasn't as bad as I had expected. It feels about an ounce lighter than its actual weight. For my US men's size 8, it's 9.9oz and that's virtually identical to my Gel-Nimbus 25, SC Trainer v1, More v4, and Invincible Run 2 (which I had to get half-size up and is actually about 0.4oz heavier than PX2S). Well, ride-wise, there is no comparison: the PX2S blows these shoes away as it is far more propulsive, bouncier, just as stable, and way more fun. As for v2 vs v1, at first, the v2 did feel much firmer and definitely not as bouncy and propulsive but, after some longer runs, it really started to grow on me. I guess it is "bottom-heavy", but I found that it doesn't really bother me unless I want to really pick up the pace all of a sudden. For me, the v2 is more of a "set-and-forget" moderate-to-easy pace long run shoe while the v1 is more for long distance tempo workouts at moderate-to-fast paces. To me, they are two totally different kinds of shoes. If I want to push myself to threshold and sustain race pace for a long while, then it's v1. If I want to cruise 15~20 miles and run more carefree and not have to stare at the road in front of me to dodge any type of obstacle that may pop up, then it's the v2. For me, it's been almost a "liberating" experience to run in the v2 as it kind of feels like a "normal stack height" shoe compared to the v1 and I can relax and enjoy the scenery more instead of being conscious all the time about stability with v1. I love both for different types of runs and can't say I like one over the other. I've logged 130 miles in the v2 over the past 3 weeks and I absolutely love it. I can't stop running in it although I rotate it with trail running in the NB SC Trail, which I also love. The ride of the v2, to me, may not be as exhilarating as it is with v1 but, to me, it's almost as fun and the much improved stability makes it even more fun for the long cruises. After some long runs with the PX2S, I've retired the GlideRide 3. The GR3 is steady and reliable but, man, what a boring ride. The PX2S makes me get excited for the long runs and that's worth every penny to me.

Best comment here. As an owner of both this sums it up perfectly. Two different shoes for two different purposes. Yes you’ll have to remortgage the house but 🤷‍♂️

@@justinknoetzke5380 Thanks. Before the running bug bit me (which I'm grateful for!), my previous hobby was being an audiophile collecting expensive headphones and using DACs and amps that cost as much as a decent car. And before that, my passion was collecting boutique electric guitars and tube amplifiers. Compared to these money pit hobbies, running and running shoes are dirt cheap and MUCH better for the health! It's also much more rewarding. But, I do have to say that the PXS (both v1 and v2) do remind me of Abyss's top-of-the-line headphone and a Suhr custom-made electric guitar which I own and are each worth way more than my entire 40+ running shoes collection.

Same thing happened to the alphafly. They dumbed down the shoe to accommodate more runners. 😢

Hey BITR, why does the lucid lemon colorway with the pink puck seem to have a hole in the front of the puck? It reminds me of the photos of the prototypes when there was a lot of hype around the shoe.

I gotta say the Prime X Strung was the BEST shoe I've ever run in in the past year, perhaps ever, without any competition. I did my first half marathon in these and my legs felt absolutely fantastic during the run and even a week after. I mean I expected these monster shoes would take care of my feet and calves, but having run another half marathon in the Vapor Fly Next% 2 right a week after I ran in the Prime X, my calves (and one side of my hips) were obliterated. Fair to say it was the first time I really felt the difference in performance that different shoes make. Of course the Prime X does have downsides, biggest of which being instability at such stack height. But with that said, it was, at worst, on par with the Adios Pro 2. So really can't complain much there. I'd say if you could get the Prime X Strung on sale now, go for it. If you have the Prime X Strung and wondering whether to get the 2, I'd say hold on, not until your current Strung give up, by which time the 2 should be on sale 😂

As someone who has a slight chance to podium in my AG (I’ve finished 5th and 8th in Boston so far) I would never risk an illegal race shoe. But I can’t get along with these super stack monsters so far anyway.

Let's be honest it's a race day shoe for amature runners. For guys who don't need stability the v1 is a great option for long runs and marathons.
